Higher English Emphasizes Literature A J English ll and 12 narrow the fields of literature down to American and English liter- ature. Grammar is still studied in English ll but more as a review. In studying American literature, juniors learn styles of Writing. College preparatory Eng- lish classes focus most of their studying on English literature. This differs from the English 12 classes in that their studies include both grammar and literature. For variety, members of the C.P. class gave oral reports on English authors and their writings. English 9 and IO Are Stepping Stones. English 9 and 10 prepare students for studying higher English. Here they receive the fundamentals of grammar and a general knowledge of literature. As freshmen, the students study the construction of short stories, novels, nonfiction, light poetry and drama. Sophomores' studies are in the same categories but more comprehensive. E I8

U. S. History and Gov't Teach Patriotism U. S. history and government classes helped to make students better citizens. History taught the ideals and goals of our forefathers and the changes that have taken place in our country's policies toward ourselves and the rest of the world. Government was con- cerned With studying how the local, state, and national govern- ments function. Mr. Puett encouraged his students to take an active part in govern- pf, ment and be concerned with its policies . 20
