lg iv, Q 139 H. 'E lk Vs as az 4 ff F W1 'Rl 4 Silhouettes seems a fitting theme for this year's Argosy. Silhouettes out- line persons, animals or inanimate ob- jects. This year's Argosy is like a silhouette because it outlines the year's activities. In a silhouette the most prominent features are recognized, and the yearbook, too, records the most outstanding features in school life. There is much left out in a silhouette, but this is filled in by the imagination of the viewer. Likewise, there is much background behind many of the pictures in the yearbook, and this is left to the memory of the students. just as sil- houettes usually portray an atmosphere of stillness and serenity, so the year- book marks a ceasing of the rush of school and a realization that another year has passed into the background. Some of the things that made up part of school life were the dances held by the various organizations and the ballots that had to be counted to determine kings and queens. Much equipment had to be gotten ready for the various sports along with the concessions that provided refreshments during half-times. Then it was back to the cheers that lead the teams to victory. Lunch tickets, absent slips, pencils, tab- lets, and erasers made the book store a busy place, as well as the library which was a source of information for the re- ports due next period. Many hours of plan- ning were spent to make the popular sen- ior cords a true work of art. Academies Activities Athletics Personalities w EQ! E l A girl's basketball game was sponsored by the Sunshine Society. The teams represented the various classes and Paul Sibray was chosen Basketball King by the student body. Even though basketball is a boy's sport some femininity managed to persist throughout the game. Cheerleaders, representing their team, dressed to fit the occasion and yelled to urge on their team. Convocations of various kinds were presented by the student coun- cil. The students not only enjoyed them but more than once were asked to participate. Among the Convocations, Alan Stewart, professional archerg a professional gyrnnastg Mary Pop- pins , a member of the Ruth Smith dancers, were featured. An Oracle is shown hanging from the rafters. He was later the center of attraction at a pep session before the Delphi game. 7 2 2 H y 0 S' 2 S H sf Q 2 SS E? Sheryl Allen played the lead- ing part of an old lady who kept her step-children guessing Where she hid her valuable bonds. Other members of the cast were Judy Berkshire, Sally Pickart, Dan Wilson, Ben Moore, Dick Fisher, Gaye Martin, jane Wilson, Steve jordan, Chuck Stiles, Rosemary Mylet and Brian Hardy. Ann Davis and Jennie Shambaugh were student directors. Mrs. Robert Rieffel was play director and Mr. Rieffel, technical director of both junior and Senior Class Plays . 9 Guidance counselors, Mrs. Douglas, with the aid of her secretary, Mrs. Allbaugh and Mr. Rector, helped stu- dents with their class schedules, inter- preting of tests, and any other problems. Mr. Rector was also busy as assistant principal as well as teacher. Another giver of advice was Mrs. jim Davis, school nurse. Besides pro- viding medical help, she also checked on school attendance. With the proper guidance from teachers and parents, and self-discipline the Class-of-66 finally reached its goal. All in one busy Weekend seniors danced to prom music, graduated and received gifts . QS? x mx? ll Prom and graduation marked the cli- max of the seniors 12 years of school. Mike Bishop and Toni Short were crowned King and Queen at the prom lsle of Dreams . The Four Dukes provided music. Graduation was both .a happy and sad occasion forthe seniors. Receiving their diplomas and congratulations from Mr. Ireland was the highpoint of the evening for the graduates. Those re- ceiving special Awards Were jennifer Shambaugh, valedictoriang Ann Davis, salutatorian and Sally Pickart, Carroll Honor Award Winner. The class was especially privileged to have the Honor- able Birch E. Bayh, jr. as their speaker. Queens SUNSHINE FALL FANTASY SUNSHINE SWEETHEART TRACK Rita Sheagl y M M F 1 2 , P 4 5 1 f A ea 1 , . ACADEMICS ,E .V 1, 91 H PI Vkh. , ,, W I English 9 and IO Are Stepping Stones. English 9 and 10 prepare students for studying higher English. Here they receive the fundamentals of grammar and a general knowledge of literature. As freshmen, the students study the construction of short stories, novels, nonfiction, light poetry and drama. Sophomores' studies are in the same categories but more comprehensive. E I8 Higher English Emphasizes Literature A J English ll and 12 narrow the fields of literature down to American and English liter- ature. Grammar is still studied in English ll but more as a review. In studying American literature, juniors learn styles of Writing. College preparatory Eng- lish classes focus most of their studying on English literature. This differs from the English 12 classes in that their studies include both grammar and literature. For variety, members of the C.P. class gave oral reports on English authors and their writings. Near the end of School, the class took advan- tage of an opportunity to rest While the teacher was out of the room. Cpictured abovej ,ua-we U. S. History and Gov't Teach Patriotism U. S. history and government classes helped to make students better citizens. History taught the ideals and goals of our forefathers and the changes that have taken place in our country's policies toward ourselves and the rest of the world. Government was con- cerned With studying how the local, state, and national govern- ments function. Mr. Puett encouraged his students to take an active part in govern- pf, ment and be concerned with its policies . 20 Economics and Psychology Are New. Mike Humphrey talks to MI. Puett about a psychology problem. Many problems i provoking. n economics class were thought Economics and psychology were two new subjects added to the curriculum this year. Teachers, Mr. Rector and Mr. Puett, found one semester per class passed quickly. A field trip to the Lo- gansport State Hospital was taken as a supplement to the first semester psychology class. World History and Geography Classes Study Past and Present Civilizations. World History and geography classes acquaint students with other countries and civilizations. By learning about the social, political and economic status of countries as well as the topography, climate and history, students can better understand problems the countries have. Many of these problems also apply to domestic situations. 22 Agriculture Classes Are Beneficial to Both Students and Adults. Agriculture classes gave students practical information on farming. They got first hand experience by doing practice farm account records. For those who intend to become farmers, facts learned about farm enterprises will also prove helpful. Tractor main- tenance Was another area of study which students found beneficial. Adult agriculture class, taught by Steve Mills, entailed study on farm management. Latin and French Classes Provide for A new teacher was added to the Latin de- partment this year. Miss Keitel helped Mrs. Douglas by taking charge of the first year classes. Working with derivatives was one of the projects of the stu- dents . Both first and second year classes were also responsible for the program at two of the Latin Club meetings this year. Study of Foreign Languages at Carroll. In her first year of teaching at Carroll, Mrs. Circle found the use of the micro- phones beneficial. Hearing the language spoken by natives of the country gave the students a more thorough understanding of French. ' Geometry Classes Work with Many Proofs The study of planes and geomet- ric figures and their relationships helps to organize students thinking not only in math but in other areas also. Geom- etry students found their proofs easier to understand if they enlarged their drawings on the blackboard. I Algebra and Trig Are Thought-Provoking. Mr. Baker kept Algebra I and Il classes on their toes solving unknowns. Students need to learn their algebra Well because they will need it if they continue their math with trigonome- try. Trig class briefly studied calculus and probability near the end of the year. Probability caused some headaches even for Mr. Baker. Now, which of the 5,000 ways could I seat them? 27 General Science Serves As an Introduction Advanced study in the science department stems from an interest in a specific area studied in general science. This year Tom Od- den, teacher, covered several areas in the course, encour- aging those who excelled in a certain phase. The students also performed some experi- ments, allowing them to get an idea of the Work involved in higher courses . l n--........., 28 Biology Combines Plant and Animal Study. Dissection of fetal pigs was one of the new experiences of this year's biology classes. Using this more ad- vanced form of animal, the students were able to compare some of the structures observed to those of the human body. Mr. Eaton also stressed the import- ance of maintaining a healthy body. Besides this study, the students took care of several animals which were brought in. Some classroom techniques may seem strange, but they do prove a point. Botany and Zoology Study Life Proccess E with y .. k it Www f 'ff9 iff! Dissecting animals Was an im- portant part of Zoology class. Body structures became apparent when they had to be identified on a rat. Although it Wasn't always enjoyable, learning came easier through the use of real specimens Botany class studied the vari- ous parts of the plants and the different stages of growth. They also observed the types of flora common to a certain area. Being directed by Mr. Mills, the stu- dents carried on study of plants Lmder microscopes . Students Learn Through Experiments. 'if Experimentation was used quite frequently in both chemistry and physics. Mr. Rieffel's chemistry classes found the im- portance of accuracy in measur- ing and the careful use of chemi- cals in obtaining the proper re- sults. New equipment made it possi- ble for Mr. Odden's physics class to perform several experi- ments. Reports were also given by students to learn of areas not covered in the book. W 3 I Business Courses Offer a Wide Bookkeeping classes were kept busy Working on practice sets, to gain experience in keep ing records for a small business. Mr. jones directed the students in the many transactions they recorded. The office practice class took charge of publication of the school paper this year. Aside from this and their regular class study, they took a trip to Purdue University to observe new types of equipment coming into use. Fleld of Stud for Several Students. Timed Writings became routine in Mr. jones' typing classes, and students found they soon became proficient in not only speed, but accuracy. Manuscript typing was a problem to many, as two carbon copies were made. This presented quite a burden when it came to erasing mistakes. Composition of letters and practical use of other typing skills were studied in more advanced courses. 33 Students Practice Speaking and Writing Second-year speech class ex- perimented with dramatic read- ings, original oratories, short stories and excerpts from plays. At left, Sheryl Allen and Bill Koup show the importance of gestures in expression. journalism class gained ex- perience in interviewing and writing reviews, critiques and various types of news stories. The class was in charge of com- piling news for the school news- paper the fifth six weeks. A special feature was an advice column by a mysterious Cousin Carroll. Speech and Hearing Aids Students Mrs. Stamper, teacher, is shown instructing the students. She helps them to combat their prob- lems through the use of special equipment. They also learn through various games which they enjoy while overcoming their problems. The school offers speech and hearing to students with speech or hearing defects. The de- partment helps to find and correct these defects. If these problems can be overcome it will lead to a better un- derstanding of school work to these students . i 5 5 i 2 2 F l L, Wg - WZ- , Z ,,,sr f ' - - - :NJEH-ggnwvx H - -K K if 7, .L vel'-ff. ,f75l,1mw?ts, ,- - ,,gig5.n.a,i r',:w,sv.a1gsg2m g,:s115TQ3,wy5swgif,,5 s ' n ' ' o ' ' K I s, ' K - 'L I ' l -H,-W t f '- L: V fi i - Mirrors were put to use so the students could . . s h th ' d f d. Concert Band Adds to School Life The concert band added many new things to the music department. This was the first year the music depart- ment could boast pom pom girls. These girls added a lot to the performances given by the band. Also added to the department were a huge drum and a band banner. The band gave many skits. At one bas- ketball game the band arranged for Bat- man and Robin to appear. They were just in time to foul the plans of the Penguin and his gang. The Hobo Prom was an activity sponsored by the band. The proper attire for the eve- ning included old shoes, clothes, and hats. The King and Queen, Gary Michael and Jane Wilson, were chosen for their original costumes. Chorus Members Practice for Concerts The chorus found that practice makes perfect . They spent some time each day rehearsing under the guidance of Mr. p Parante. T The chorus not only entertained those at home but they traveled with the band and participated in many programs. Featured in the lower picture is Brenda Mullendore, drum major. In the hack- ground is the new band banner. Home Ee. Offers Valuable Experience Mrs. Mi1ner's demonstrations provided various dishes for her girls to taste Home economics classes of- fer valuable experiences for girls who want to become good homemakers. Freshmen's main activity of the year was Working on color, line and design. Sophomores studied about and learned how to cook the various cuts of meats, and juniors studied child care. As a part of their study, juniors invited small children to come to Car- roll for play sessions. Senior girls Worked extensively with sewing and had a limited amount of cooking the first of the year. Art Students Develop Individual Styles. First period Art Class gained insight into space by designing freeforrns from pieces of Balsa Wood. Home Ec. girls learned basics of art in working with display cases. Oil painting was one of the highlights of the second period art class this year. Still life drawings, figure studies, printing painting, and sculpturing were just a few of the areas covered for vari- ous class projects. Many students developed their own skills by making posters signs, displays, and backdrops for the school. In the spring the stu- dents had a chance to display their year's Work along with the elementary and PSI IOTA Xl County Art Show. 39 Q C 2 ll lf i l Driver Education Teaches Safety Reaction from the accelerator to the brake could mean the difference between life and death. Driver education in- structs students on the proper way to drive, safety precautions and some in- ternal workings of the car. This course is valuable be- cause the student is given practical experience with the supervision of an in- structor. Films through- out the year helped to make the students more conscientious about their driving. Late in the year a car safety demonstration was given for the benefit of regular driver educa- tion students or any other student interested. This car is a familiar one in school sessions as well as the summer. Physical Ed. and Health Promote Hygiene. Physical education and health classes form an important part of a student's education. Fit bodies and fit minds go together. These classes inform students on how and Why to be healthy and give encouragement and practice in carrying out what they've learned. 41 Shop Boys Learn from Special Projects. Shop boys gained expe- rience in working with dif ferent types of machinery Students learned that Welding takes skill and patience. Individual proj - ects gave the boys a chance to make what they Wanted to, while group projects developed co- operation. Making and painting hurdles for the track team was a joint effort this year. Drafting and Printing Demand Exaetness. In drafting classes the basics of architecture were taught to the boys. They had to design and sketch different kinds of buildings, making sure they effectively used the space and safety devices. V Mr. Peterson not only had duties in drafting, but he also taught students how to set up type and run the printing presses . 43 G ,E E L Q ? il if E 5 fa 14 E ACTIVITIES 9 L I I, I,,W .,., , ., ,I.,,,,-.. ...I,..,,... ....l. Boys developed strong loyalty to their team, giving every ounce of effort to push forward a vic- tory. FRONT ROW D Garrison, E Denison, J Moss, T Seward, J. Cosby, D. Daggy. BACK ROW: D. At the lower right Tony Smith is pictured await- ing the pitch. 68 Cheerbloek and Cheerleaders Back Team Carroll High School had cheer- leaders and a cheerblock to be proud of this year. Through cooperation and practice, they presented yells that helped to build school spirit and back the team. Cheerleaders Toni Short, Rita Sheagley, Gaye Martin and Pam Hutson worked hard pre- paring posters to create extra enthusiasm for the games. 1 5-Bi! - - C-Club, Intramural Stress Sportsmanship C-Club members adapted a code of ethics this year for all present and future members to follow. The cooks, who were responsible for doing this, worked well under the direction of Mrs. Mildred I-Iausenfluck. Serving the students and faculty members in a matter of very few minutes took the cooperation of each one. Those pictured at the left are Donnabelle Myer, Doris Sheagley, Winifred Landes, Dorothy Fisher, Jean Kingery, JoAnn Segraves, and Mildred Hausenfluck. Bus drivers also served the students in trans- porting them to and from school. Patience and nerves of steel were two of the qualifications for this job, for there were several problems encountered.
