I . .1 I - Corpus Christi's fourth senior high school was dedicated October 'l to Miss Mary Carroll, former teacher, principal and superintendent of Corpus Christi Public Schools. Carroll High Band made itsfirst appearance at the dedication More than 800 guests at the dedi- cation ceremonies heard 'Miss Mary accept the honors bestowed upon her. Glancing about the new Sl,750,000 high school, Miss Carroll honored the teachers 'and all other members on the team' who taught and worked with her from l9Ol-l933. Then she gave her dedication of Carroll High School: 'That the teachers find their work here rewarding, the pu- pils find their studies soul-satisfying, and the building be a functioning unit ofthe school system 50 years from now.' Miss Carroll's advice to students of yesteryears as well as those of to- day is expressed in her favorite quo- tation: 'Ships sail east and ships sail west, By the selfsame winds that blow. lt's the set of the sail, And not the gale, That determines the way to go. Below: Miss Carroll stands beside an oil painting of herself which will hang near the administrative offices in the main hall ofthe new building. --...IRM ,X . 3w's 'f tx in ' 4 - ' ' -f' ' a p,..s Q fx V 'F L , . TIGER TEAM NEVER QUITS Five men make up the coaching staff of Carroll's Tiger football team. While Vernon Ashton is Carroll's first coach, he is not astrangerto Corpus Christi. He has built a very commendable record at Roy Miller and Grand Prairie while worlc- ing as Tom Pruett's right hand man. His easy going disposition and friendly rela- tionship with his boys makes Cotton an ideal choice for this position. Bruce Lawrence is coaching B-team football which will add great strength to the Tiger varsity in a short time. Murray C. Mitchell -assistant coach is also bas- ketball coach at Carroll. Kenneth Beard- en-assistant coach at Carroll will coach track also. David Donnan-assistant coach will organize and coach varsity baseball this year at Carroll. 'They were all good teams-fine teams. 'But Corpus Christi, nor for that matter any other city, has ever had a GREATER team than those two dozen kids now playmj for Mary Carroil. 'No Seniors. No lcttervnen. No niusclernen. And no chance to win. A skinny bunch of kids hardly powerful enough to hold their own in Class B competition-and yet thrown into a schedule against the tough AA outfits. ln the four games I have witnessed Mary Carroll hosn't shown a thing-except cold raw managers had courage' 'But those kids have Jot it-the stuff MEN are made af. I've seen Jim Thorp in action, as well as Grange, George Gipp, Dori Hutson, Sid Luckman and other football greats.
