Saints Defend Conference Title . . . Qualify For NAIA Playoffs Again After the Fighting Saints captured the 1985 Frontier Conference football title and earned an NAIA playoff bid with a number 7 rank in NAIA Division II, it didn't seem like their accomplishments could be topped. But, the 1986 Fighting Saints began the season with a number 8 rankine and didn't look back. Carroll reached as high as number 2 in the national poll, but after tallying an 8-0 regular season record and defending their Frontier Conference title, they finished with a number 4 ranking and NAIA Division II. Thus, the Saints earned their second NAIA playoff spot in as many years. The Fighting Saints' first playoff game was in Dickinson, North Dakota, against the number 3 ranked Blue Hawks. The Blue 1 lawks battled it out in the wind and snow, but the Saints prevailed 21-16. The win was Carroll's first plavoff victory in three tries and game Head Coach Bob Petrino his 90th win at Carroll. Mike Burat-to was named Offensive Player of the Game while Bart Aby earned Defensive Player honors. Carroll's next challenge was number 1 ranked I infield College on their home field in McMinville, Oregon. Fall Search 1987 Lasting friendships were made as 40 Carroll students attended the Fall Search. Many attended with anxiety, hut this feeling was quickly replaced with the feeling of love.
