The entire week was tilled with activities highlighted by the coronation, game, and dance. For the coronation, each class voted on a prince and princess, with the King and Queen from the Senior class. The royalty were Freshman Vince DeFelice and Mary Callus, Sophomores George Bourekis and Beth Sterling, Juniors Larry Healy and Chris Nelson, and the Senior King and Queen were Joey Laythe and Theresa Lapke. MC's for the Coronation were Cary McDermott and Jackie Carr. Some of the activities included a mock Awards Night, the Dating Game, a coffee house, I and an air band competition with the winners being The Bitches (lip-syncing to You Don't Have To Take Your Clothes Off, ) The Homecoming Dance was held at the Civic Center with the band Final Exam. The parade and game were on Saturday with Clara Cavanaugh as the Grand Marshall. At Vigilante Stadium, the Fighting Saints were once again vic torious over Rocky Mountain College. Yes, Homecoming 1986 was indeed a time to remember. 17 18 Little Theater Plays The performing arts of Carroll College succeeded at shining again this year. We saw the smoothness and dexterity of voice in the Main Attraction who stirred the hearts of students. Carroll's own John Kline delighted the relaxed crowd in the Guad lounge with his guitar extraordinaire. Larry Long made his triumphant dehut at Carroll. His heartwarming music and smile brought great applause, as well as the pounding hearts from Anne Moylan and Stacey Holm, The coffeehouses, overall, can be said to have been a great success. I n Fall Search 1987 Lasting friendships were made as 40 Carroll students attended the Fall Search. Many attended with anxiety, hut this feeling was quickly replaced with the feeling of love. Qualify For NAIA Playoffs Again After the Fighting Saints captured the 1985 Frontier Conference football title and earned an NAIA playoff bid with a number 7 rank in NAIA Division II, it didn't seem like their accomplishments could be topped. But, the 1986 Fighting Saints began the season with a number 8 rankine and didn't look back. Carroll reached as high as number 2 in the national poll, but after tallying an 8-0 regular season record and defending their Frontier Conference title, they finished with a number 4 ranking and NAIA Division II. Thus, the Saints earned their second NAIA playoff spot in as many years. The Fighting Saints' first playoff game was in Dickinson, North Dakota, against the number 3 ranked Blue Hawks. The Blue 1 lawks battled it out in the wind and snow, but the Saints prevailed 21-16. The win was Carroll's first plavoff victory in three tries and game Head Coach Bob Petrino his 90th win at Carroll. Mike Burat-to was named Offensive Player of the Game while Bart Aby earned Defensive Player honors. Carroll's next challenge was number 1 ranked I infield College on their home field in McMinville, Oregon. Linfield proved they deserved the top ranking as they defeated Carroll 53-7 and went on to win the national title. THE 1986 FIGHTING SAINTS, front Row: David Frankmo, manager; Ron Kenney. Chris Volk. Lady Saints Reach Goals At the beginning of the year, the Lady Saints set the goals of bettering their 29-10 1985 record, going undefeated in the Frontier Conference and winning the District 12 title. As predicted, the Saints did just that. After winning the District 12 championship, the Lady Saints hosted Kearney State of Nebraska. Playing to a full house, Carroll and Kearney State showed Helena fans an excellent match, but Kearney prevailed, winning the first three games in a best three-out-five match. The Saints lose three seniors, Diane Lederhos, Kelly Garver and Joanna Poage. Several individuals earned honors during Carroll's 35-10 season. Liz Garrett was named Frontier Conference MVP. Garrett and Jan Kaaina earned all district 12 and first team all conference honors. Joanna Poage was also named to the conference's first team while Kathleen Paulus and Beth Anderson received second team honors. Kelly Garver and Anderson were members of the academic all confernece team. Carroll's coach, Charlie Brown, was named the Frontier Conference Volleyball Coach of the Year. The parly began at the illustrious and elegant Red Meadow Bar and moved soon thereafter to Sleeping Giant lanes for some bowling. Brian Canady topped the evening's highlights when he bowled a perfect zero game, and simultaneously mawled the ball returner. For the first time in ten years Saints Win Playoff Championship Their 17-16 overall record doesn't really reflect the type of season the Fighting Saints had this year. In a way it does, because the Saints split with almost all of their opponents and didn't get much above the .5(X) mark all year. Their conference record was 7-9, but that doesn't tell the rest of the story. Follwing a six-game losing streak, the Fighting Saints won their last three regular season games to squeak into third place in the Frontier Conference, thus qualifying for the conference playoffs. Carroll handled second-place finisher Western Montana College 105-94 and went on to face conference champion Rocky Mountain College. For the first time in ten years the Saints won the Frontier Conference Playoff Championship with a victory over the Bears, a team that beat Carroll three times during conference play. Carroll's next challenge was Valley City State, but the Saints fell short of a win in the District 12 Semi-Final game. This year's Saints broke four team and individual records under first-year coach )im Kampen. 19 THE 1986-87 FIGHTING SAINTS BASKETBAll 11 AM, Kneeling: Chuck Clark, Trainer; Kenny Franklin, Mall Trcsch, Ray Deegan, David Mohl, Mitch Gundlach, Frank Hodge, Al files. Individually, Tony Egland earned Frontier Conference MVP honors and was named to the all-district team. I ony also broke two individual records. He set the record for field goals made in a season with 112, breaking the old record of 242 field goals set by Dave Leslie during the 1974-75 season. Egland scored 754 points this year, breaking Tony Sapit's 19-year-old record of 695 points. Kenny Franklin, who was named to the conference's first team, led the Saints with 247 assists, shattering Marc Racicot's 1969-70 record of 168 assists in a season. Frank Hodge was named academic all-conference as well as earning Honorable Mention Academic All-American honors. But, this year's Lady Saints did it! Tom Kelly's Saints finished second in the Frontier Conference with an 11-5 record and Carroll's 22-9 overall mark set a new record for most wins in a season. The Lady Saints qualified for the NAIA District 12 playoffs again, beating Northern State of South Dakota 79-69 before losing to Northern Montana College, the eventual District 12 champions. Seniors Mary Burton, Gigi Gehrke and Liz Garrett set career records at Carroll as a total of 15 team and individual records were updated. Next year the Lady Saints will be without the services of five seniors, Lisa Gross and DeeAnn janikula, in addition to Burton, Gehrke and Garrett, as well as sophomore starter Anne Arvish, Thus, the Carroll women will be doing some rebuilding. However, some experienced players will return and the Lady Saints will be competitive again next year. 42 THE 1986-87 LADY SAINTS BASKETBALL TEAM, Kneeling: Head Coach Tom Kelly, Assistant Coach Tim Kelly. It's activities are beyond joy. It's leadership is by far the most singularly unique at all of Carroll. In fact, it's membership is the most singularly unique of all dubs. The club we speak of is none other than PRE LAW CLUB. When we speak of it's singular uniqueness - we speak of it's leader and only member, TOM CLEARY. Tom apparently has plenty of fun all alone as he singularly maps out club activities like splitaire. He does admit one function his club sponsored failed he said hide-and-seek was a complete bomb. Yes, the PRE-LAW CLUB does exist. It is also apparent that TOM CLEARY sits in a club all his own. 91 Sigma Rho Lambda Back Row: Sherry Olson, Pat Widhalm, Barb Slunaker, Anita Mariarity, Alice Zentner, Liz Simons, Sherry Schuety, Debbie Hellhake.
