Joannle Chaloupka and Deanna Paulis were chosen for the second team. Said Coach Brown. One of our goals was to win 60% of our matches and we accomplished that goal. Our other goal was to win the conference championship. We didn't accomplish this so we weren't completely satisfied with our efforts. Overall though. Because we were a relatively young team we knew starting the season that it would be a rebuilding year. I was unsatisfied with the season. We should have won 3 more games: against Rocky, Minot and Sanoma. Against these teams we lost with a total of 9 points. However, our young kids got a lot of good experience and will be better in 1984 . The Saints shifted to a passing style offense, headed by Quarterback John Peterson. Peterson set a new school record in passing. Carroll places 7 players on the 1983 All Frontier Conference football teams. Seniors Chance Ferlicka-linebacker. and Bill Prueninger-tightend. received first team honors. Named to the 2nd team were sophomores: Tom Byrne and Dave Ternes-wide receivers; Tony Strainer-linebacker; and Rich Watkins-defensive back. 26 27 28 29 MENS BASKETBALL It was an extremely competitive season for the 1983-84 Saints, finishing 11-14 overall and 6-9 in the conference. Coach John Driscoll felt it to be the best balance in terms of the league, in the four seasons that he has been here. Coach Driscoll went on to say. There were many good teams, tt 1 Montana Tech and n2 Western, each lost 5 games, which indicates the strength of the league. We sealed our own fate by not being able to win enough home games. We had a fine group of young men particularly the Seniors. Sr. Bob Petrino led the team in scoring points and with assists. He holds the school's consecutive freethrow record at 34. Petrino was the 3rd leading scorer in District, and 2nd leading freethrower this season. Junior Brian Bender led the team in rebounds. Perhaps the season was highlighted by an overtime victory against Montana Tech, in Butte on February 16. With 4 of the 5 starters returning next year, there is much optimism for the 1984-85 season. Team members include: Brian Bender. Kirk Bielke. Jeff Carling. Rick Crabtree. Joe Fischer. Ed Flowers. Joe Fretheim. Tom Longacre. Brad Murphy, Bobby Petrino. Jon Pucket. Andy Steele. Jay Wilson. 31 WOMENS BASKETBALL Ending their season with a 7-20 overall and a 4-11 conference record, the 1983-84 Lady Saints gained a lot of ' experience. Coach Tom Kelly described it as “An interesting year highlighted by an extreme amount of learning, but a hard year because we were young. The Lady Saints sported 10 freshmen. 4 sophomores and 1 junior. Nevertheless, freshmen. Chris Kelly, was named to the All Conference second team. Chris also broke the school record for the most field goals in a season with a 54% shooting average. Sophomore. Mary Roos. was named to the academic All Conference Team. Paula and Chris were named co-winners of the Cathy Wallace “Most Valuable Player award. Coach Kelly added. ‘Sometimes you have to go through a hard time, but the future is looking bright . With all of the girls returning next season, they have great potential to be a strong team. Top Row (left to right) Coach Kelly. Sue Petaja. Chris Kelly. Gigi Gehrke. Laura Childs. Michol Bauer. With the cooperation of Submain and the pepband the girls were able to develope quite a strong and loud crowd following this year. 38 PUTTIN ON THE RITZ Puttin on the Ritz . was this year's Homecoming theme. Throughout the week, various activities kept the classes and clubs busy in order to prepare everyone for the game against Western on Saturday. These activities included a parade, a dance, and dress-up days during the week. 40 Homecoming Royalty. 1983-84. (Left to Right)- Freshman Prince and Princess. There were activities such as Walsh Lectures and Coffeehouses, free of charge once a month. Not only was there fine entertainment. but free coffee, hot cocoa, and donuts. 43 In the Sprintime Carroll caught Softball Fever, and did they ever! An outstanding turnout of 33 teams made this softball tournament a very competitive and successful one. Organized by Freshman President. Chris Gallus. all went smoothly and the competition between teams was always in good fun. Although the winning of the games might have seemed secondary to some, all were glad that they did participate. The team called The Roosters” came away with the win and the championship and souviner T-Shirts of the tournament. After the tournament was over Chris Gallus stated that. I felt it all went well and everybody had a good time and that's what we're here for—isn't it? _____________________ 44 45 GO GREEK! One of the most looked forward to dances of the year, is the annual Toga party put on by the SPURS. Draped in sheets and towels, the campus returns to ancient times and enters a Greek city. 46 Throughout the year, the students are given the chance to put on their boogie shoes and get away from it all by the various dances. They are sponsored by the different clubs and classes here on campus. The theme depends upon the time of year or mood, which the clubs decide to create. 47 DATING? Dating at Carroll is not a rare phenomena, which most complainers make it out to be. it actually does exist. Dates range from beer and pizza to the formal events. These dates are not always the traditional couple dates, but a large group of people instead. Anyway one looks at it, dating is a part of student life at Carroll. 48 On a vacation in the Black Hills, at work in Seattle, while cutting your grass in Phoniex, while flying a kite with your grandkids in Maine, or maybe at your wedding reception, maybe before your first job interview in Portland, at a family Christmas gathering in Missoula, when cleaning out your attic in Spokane, maybe while bumping into an old friend from Omaha in Denver's airport, maybe after your graduation from med school in California, while having a drink at the M M in Butte, while skiing in Utah, or maybe while taping an album in Casper. YOU WILL REMEMBER ... A time, a time back in 84. 83.82. 81. A time during your college days, a time at CARROLL COLLEGE ... Maybe a time after a winter formal, a time after a foul was called during an intramural game, before an accounting test, while having a beer at the ''Pub'', before a big practical, maybe a time before a 4th south kegger. doubtfully after a 4th south kegger. maybe skiing at Belmont, while hunting in the Ruby, while performing at the little theatre, maybe while stealing girl's underwear at Guad. maybe dancing at Rose's, an afternoon in the library, maybe an afternoon at Canyon Ferry, maybe before playing Western at Vigilante, maybe lunch at Saga, the spring concert, maybe before volleyball practice, or maybe a time when you received a package in the mailroom. You will remember some of these things and some you won't, you will remember many events at Carroll and most will bring a smile to your face, and that smile is just as valuable as the diploma you will recieve when your days at Carroll are over. Time and Again ... when you contemplated where on earth you would ever need this calculus formula in the world, when you wondered was it really worth it to stay in the classroom when you could be at Park Lake, when you wished your history test would just be over with, when you swore you were gonna kill the girls rooming next to you. when you had to study on a Friday night instead of going to El Vacquero. when you flunked a Zoo Color section divider page (l-r): The egg throwing contest during the Freshman Fun and Games. Faculty members are chosen from a variety of academic backgrounds and institutions in the United States and other countries on the basis of their scholarship, devotion to teaching, and indicated preference for teaching in a Catholic liberal arts college. While scholary work is encouraged, faculty members are selected, retained and promoted chiefly on the basis of their demonstrated effectiveness as teachers and advisors. They are expected to stimulate an admiration of and a desire for excellence, and to demonstrate excellence in themselves. Dr. Frank Kerins. President Sr. Mary Sarah Fasenmeyer. Dan Hillen. returned this year with 60 participants. The object. is to construct some type of container to prevent an egg from breaking, when dropped from the balcony of St. Charles. Prizes were given for the egg left intact and for the most ingenious containers. 98 Students at Carroll are unique individuals. who jump at a chance for adventure. The only problem seems to be. these individuals experience challenges through groups only. 99 100 freshmen this year got a head start on the Carroll way of life by starting the year on a backpack trip three days prior to the beginning of the school year. The new students got a chance to relax and get to know other new students. The experience proved to be one of good times for all of the freshmen, and was enjoyed by the many upperclassmen who joined the trip as counselors. The events which made up the excitement of the pack trip were the numerous skits, hikes, campfires and a special mass offered by Fr. Dan Hillen on the last day of the excursion. After an outing like that, all were ready to jump right into the Carroll Family. 100 The Smoker is the annual boxing event put on by the Junior Class. This year's theme was Hurts So Good”. The evening was full of entertainment provided by the Jazz Band, beautiful card girls, and a variety of men. who fought with the Carroll spirit. 101 CjUkfcUu a. chiUL Cmi nut to (Uujkt isOu ntf u ohsUu 0 cjj fioC u)ki s-tju, $kt oa6 'futC rf'tfuAA £LtY AtU -burfiLt 4st-tkLs sfiuUiMj bf As shs (UsL-tkc S toJ ljuujr' YlutuC om-sL )rwbi£s aO tu7 om L dtlovy 'bJjCris cwti o fry As O-C -tuvU-i Wju ca £. rzburuC CtfO pkUj UoAlJ fidu Jj frnvc vAurt rwC CAmaA-J QmjL, AO ySU A AnfiU YVUtCXs O-jsfL XtuAius Cur-tits uus-tUc (JuJUl TKMAtrtUkj dj U aytUA j tlu tftoS C jUuL n r it , oUjuy JrTHpv SbriAtUsJ er Ojn kMhu utrio(€t Uisr ' ■yui ir AJfpUAJ, IdmJ HuLTrf t A ot Mtdtcj nudtc kiv dAjLajxl$ £tytlt ;4YUUt, tuut fytLe L CumAuaTS anus wiO (W JtaUs - rxibCJU'lOtut u d'kroujlt -tfu ' WKS dm . tkuj -Ult filtw rft t -toms, u)Dui±T bL UV jic P dueucus Onus your --ftciHo JylevJ-trki lTxJmj d uruj uulnjAMjt-uaO -tkrtrtu It Hust tf Jkrvj w df?a u£ huxlc Gdut tfr?u dAA (tHiuutfr Jkh tu it TUufdrTOMCL? Tracy Garrick and Tom Zurfluh left us with many of these moments -filled with love, laughter, sharing, and caring. Their attitudes towards life and the friends who comprise it shall never cease to be a learning experience for those of us left to carry on. To them now. we dedicate these pages of moments captured by the lens. 103 Ikjide this issu 5rhooK we ,'t f .. - mi T. AsV e co ‘College r.1 - “ %a -to thank Wfeflt t swbfe cated people.
