Building over the years the relationships and attitudes of our lives. The times to laugh and be goofy, the times to be serious and serene, the times to be tough and a time to be yourself. These times we share with you as we celebrated them at Carroll. 33 34 Many Carroll freshmen decided to start out the year with exercise. The freshmen backpack trip provided a good setting to get to know others before the semester began. Many upperclassmen joined in the fun as counselors. The skits, singing, campfires, and snipe hunts provided a weekend of fun and a start on many friendships. What freshmen could pass up a senior sponsored evening full of games of refreshments? Of course, some freshmen had to be “coaxed” to join in. The traditional freshmen games turned out to be worth the time. 35 Carroll students were entertained by a variety of musical talents. Borromeo serenaded the girls of Guad with many popular romantic songs while the girls crowded the balconies soaking it all in. The ASCC sponsored many coffeehouses and provided coffee, hot chocolate, and donuts. Many talented musicians provided students with a relaxing study break. Don Miller drew a crowd in St. Alberts with his guitar and sons. The Spring Concert was held in the Helena Civic Auditorium with POCO blasting their tunes. 36 37 Homecoming 1982 was kickedoff on Sunday October 3 with the royalty coronation on St. Charle's steps. Seniors Fran McCormack and Denise Troupe (opp page middle left) captured king and queen honors; Greg Peterson and Liz Lederhos (left middle) were elected junior prince and princess; Cindy Fryhl-ing and Tim Mclnnis (opp page top left) stood at the sophomore throne; and Alicia Byrd and Mike Snyder (opp page middle right) reigned over the freshmen. The MC’s were Dale Hause and Cindy Olszewski (opp page top left). There were many activities and dress up days at Saga during the week and the snake dance slithered through the local bars as usual. The highlights of the week were the parade, the dance, and the game which the Saints defeated Montana Teck 23-21. 38 40 Carroll put on many dances throughout the year. Included in these many were Homecoming, Halloween, Screw Your Roommate, Winter Formal, Punk, Sadie Hawkins, and Spring Formal. There were also various casual mixers to liven up dead weekends. 41 The Little Theatre opened its curtains with the production of Henrik Ibsen's “Hedda Gabbler.” The play set in Norway in the year 1890 dramatized the unhappiness of a well-bred married woman. “My Days as a Youngling was a musical about the early years of the concert artist, arranger, and composer of folk music, John Jacob Niles. ‘‘Royal Gambit” was the third production. Written by Herman Gressieker and adapted in English by George White, it depicted the historical account of Henry VIII and the relationships with his six different wives. Not pictured is the last play “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” a soft rock musical that retells the Old Testament story of Joseph and his multi-colored coat. 43 com — h — n ZOcnmiTim 44 45 47 The ASCC invited many noted speakers to Carroll. The Walsh Lecture Series and the Montana Series provided for many lectures on a wide range of topics. These speakers provided insights to areas of student interest and involvement. Attendance was high at many of these presentations, proving that the series was and will be a meaningful part of the Carroll community. These speakers included: A. Helena Poet. Ed Lehy, Michael Novak. Fr. Thomas Lynch, and Eugene McCarthy. 48 The Carroll College “SAINTS” showed their competitive spirit throughout the year in the numerous victories and the good sportsmanship attitude when faced with defeat. Thanks to all who participated and to you who came to cheer the “SAINTS onward. A special thanks to Mr. Don Beaudette who supplies the Hilltopper with many of its tremendous shots, and to the Development Office for your time. WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL The Lady Saints Volleyball Team finished the season with a 14-22 overall record with a 4-5 conference record, which was good for third place. The Lady Saints fielded a strong starting team and it looked like a extremely successful season. Misfortune soon set in. During the season the team lost a key player as well as a number of starting players who were injured or sick. But even with these set backs, the team showed a great desire. The team set four school records in serving accuracy, spiking consistancy, receiving consistancy, and blocking consistency. TEAM MEMBERS: (front row) Kandi Karnath, Denise Downs. Cheryl Cavalll. As a team, Carroll finished the season ranked second in the District in total offense with 3,457 yds. and a 384.1 yd. average, and second in team passing offense with 146.0 completions in 277 attempts for 2028 yds and 13 touchdowns. Bob Petrino lead District 12 in total offense with 2206 yards and in passing with 2028 yards. Dan Frankino became the first Frontier Conference player to be selected to the NAIA Academic All-American team. 53 (lower right) Coaches: (back row) Dave Simac, Steve Ahmann. Despite the losses of personnel, the men of Carroll showed great character and determination from the start of the season to its conclusion. The youthful Saints who has only two Seniors on the 1982-83 roster were able to garner only six victories. The team played with great intensity frequently coming close in taking superior talented teams to the wire only to lose in the closing moments. Probably the biggest win this season would have to be the 48-46 victory over Eastern Montana, a team Carroll had not defeated in the last ten efforts. Individually, there was no single stand-out this season. The teams leading scorer was sophomore. John Shaddle. who averaged 13.7 points per game. Carroll fielded a young team with only three Seniors on the roster. Wendy Sears, the 6-0 forward from Great Falls, emerged as the team’s top scorer. Sears was second on the club in rebounding, and handed out 41 assists. Patterson, a 5-8 guard-forward from Great Falls, lead the team in rebounding with 6 per game, 65 assists, and a field goal percentage of 43. Wirtz, a 5-9 forward from Outlook, the teams top defensive player. She scored 7.8 points per game with 4.9 rebounds. Carroll coach, Tom Kelly, said. “We had a very difficult pre-season and Frontier Conference schedule this year. Our kids played all year and several of our younger players proved they have the ability to play successfully in college ball. If the people we bring back continue to work hard to improve, we feel we have the potential to be a very competitive team next (top) Sue Unfred successfully takes the upperhand during jump ball. Each section had its own section head. The editor of the Hilltopper worked with each section as well as structuring the book, thus forming a cohesive working unit. This year was an educational one for the staff, who started the year as an inexperienced group, progressing towards reaching our goals. Showing the inside story of dorm life, all aspects of campus life, and making this yearbook one that will be cherished as holding the memories of our friends and Carroll College. This took on a literal sense with the construction of the office and lay-out room in St. Alberts — the new community center. An unprecedented staff of over 50 dedicated and talented individuals worked to produce 13% more copy over the norm in 11 newsworthy issues. The Prospector was commended by the Academic Dean for its fine quality. Playing an integral part in campus politics, the Prospector, as voice of the students, played in a decisive role in the reversal of two administrative desions. For the times we came running to you for advise and you gave your sound opinions, for the times you saw a student fail but rise to challenge the problem. You have watched us grow and mature into wellrounded people of action in the community of Carroll, development of attitudes and values, and growth of insight. To the Educators of Carroll College and the wisdom you have installed within us will be remembered always. 87 office of the president carroll of montana September 24, 1982 With this edition of the Hilltopper, the Carroll College Yearbook, I offer greetings and best wishes both personally and on behalf of the entire college community. Especially to the graduates of the Class of 1983, you have our prayers and hope that your future will bring happiness, success in achieving your goals, and the satisfaction of giving useful service to other persons. Please retain your interest in and commitment to Carroll. We need and welcome your advice and criticisms, to help us do the best we can in providing good education to all of our students. You can help to make Carroll better known and respected wherever you go. And, of course, we always need your financial assistance, to provide opportunity to those who come after you. It is our hope that you will be well prepared academically and for engagement in future studies or in your career. Intellectual development must continue throughout life, in both professional and human dimensions. Above all, we hope that you have, and will apply in the years ahead, a sound and noble set of values, in which concern for human persons, justice and truth are more important than possessions. Finally, we hope that Carroll has been of significant assistance to you in all of these things. God be with you always. Francis J.
