As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and agressive persons, they are vexatious to the spirit. 3 If you compare yourself to others you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be great and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is fullof heroism Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be crynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gradefully surrendering the things of youth; nurture strength of spirit to shield misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and lonliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. 5 You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you. no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should Therefore be at peace with God. whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful Strive to be happy. Found in Old Saint Paul's Church Baltimore Dated 1692 7 10 The 1981 Homecoming Parade was an explosion of color. It began at the P.E. Homecoming Porode — Rebirth of o Corroll Tradition n This year marked a change in the Homecoming royalty nomination process. Each class elected a prince and a princess to represent their peers. The senior class elected three princes and three princesses and the entire student body selected from these candidates a King and Queen. Tammy Schell, a prem-ed student was elected queen. A fellow pre-med student. Brian Harrington (top left) was elected King of the weeks festivities. The junior class elected Jon Lewis and Denise Troupe (top right) to represent them, the sophomore class chose Joe Ryan and Tracy Fennessy (middle right) and for the freshman. Pat Powers and Margaret Fitzpatrick (bottom right). The Homecoming royalty reigned over the weeklong festivities in true regal style. Shun boosted Carroll pride leading the student body in a spirited chant (bottom left). Carroll pride was at an all-time high during the event filled week. A well organized Homecoming encompasses many events. For example, Tom Mertes (top left) shows the proper way of eating out a pie. Car-roll students showed the traditional zeal for prefunctioning by initiating the Snake Dance, (top right) snaking their way up town by way of the local bars. There was also an early morning PJ party at SAGA, (bottom right) Kristi Norr and Roberta Winch found great pleasure in bouncing on the see saw for the Spurs, (bottom left) and the legs contest (middle left) had surprises for all. CORETTE CARROLL COLLEGE The Holloween dance turned out to be the ghostly, ghastly event of the year. Some of the creatures appearing at the dance were Tom Mertes (top left) as the nuclear child of the eighties. Gary Goudreau, resplendent in his punk paraphernanalia and his groupies Tony and Janet. The beautiful Kathleen Mun-shower (middle right) shows off her flowing, golden locks, while a mysterious creature from another campus invaded the dance. The ghostly affair turned out to be a wild and memorable occasion for most. Where else could you see dancing Hershey Kisses, a walking golden gate bridge, and fun loving Lone Star Beer Bottles? 15 Carroll Gathers to Praise On September 13th Carroll students, administration, and faculty gathered together at the Cathedral of St. Helena to celebrate the Mass of the Holly Spirit. The mass was celebrated by Bishop Eldon F. Curtiss (top right) and con celebrated by priests from Carroll. The homily was delivered by Fr. Joseph Harrington. The music was provided by the Carroll Choir and the congregation was led by Fr. Driscoll. John Wood acted as crossbearer and acolytes were John Mannix and John Wood (top right). The faces of the crowd reflect the feeling of the occasion. The Carroll Community led by Bishop Curtiss made the event a great success. 16 A Christmas Carroll The Christmas season at Carroll was greeted with much excitement and enthusiasm. The spirit of friendship and community touched everyone. Not even the dreaded final exams could overshadow the good cheer as seen here in these smiling faces as rooms were decorated and presents exchanged This year an ASCC sponsored Christmas party was held in the lower Commons. The party was a great success and those fortunate enough to attend were given a special treat when Carroll's own version of the Supremes performed. And we mustn't forget those boys from Borromeo who provided a welcome study break to the girls of Guadalupe with their renditions of various Christmas carols. Although students were anxious to be home with their families for the holidays, the Carroll family provided a very warm and fun place for students to be until that time arrived. Rhonda Nagel, Paula Schafer, Becky Schaff, Marcie Rosenow, Mary Rose Goetz, and Sandra Ross, provided spirit and support for our athletic teams. The class of 1984 brought Carroll one of the finest homecoming celebrations in years. About 80 people worked on the festivities which were held during the week of October 18-24. A beautiful banner was made for the parade by Liz Leadershos. Steve Davidson, and Joe Ryan. They won the best float in th parade and were awarded the title of the most spirited class. Sophomore royalty was princess Tracy Fennessy. and Prince Joe Ryan. Julie Sullivan was the ‘top aide' to the officers and helped greatly with the homecoming week plans. The following also put many hours of work into the activities: Angela Byrd, Jack McGlaughlin, John Ysursa, Spud. Gina Medeiros. Mary Kay Lane. Steve Davidson. John Garver, and Dan Judge. The class mass was celebrated December 8th in St. Charles Chapel. The annual Christmas skit was led by Angela Byrd, Mary Gilluly. Dino Seim, and Lori McElhenney. They were backed up by a group of guys who really put on a show. The sophomore class pre-game dinner was held February 20th in the lower commons. Dean Hendrickson. Cheryl Cavalli, and Pat Dooris provided music for dinner entertainment. Six spirited male cheerleaders attended the dinner and cheered at the basketball game. These gorgeous guys were Mike Regan. Greg Gross, Greg Peterson. Bill Bouten, Pete Bump, and Steve Bunch. Tara O'Connor, Stacie Heidinger. Jane Hammet, Teresa Ritter. Steve Davidson. Greg Gross, and Greg Peterson worked with extra effort on this class activity. A concession stand was organized at the all school softball tourney in April. The sophomore class was truly one of spirit and pride. The sophomore clubs, the S.O.B.’s and the Spurs worked at all the games taking tickets and selling programs. The S.O.B.’s occassionally showed their pride by parading into games with shorts and sunglasses on. The class of ‘84 played an active part in their year at Carroll. 106 107 Collette Anderson Lisa Aslakson Lisa Atkinson Sandra Bauer Susanne Bayer Joe Beneventi Judy Bisson Louie Blood Dolores Bock Paul Bock Steve Adley Sabina Alexander Beatrix Alo Teresa Bonny Roger Bradley Kim Burch Greg Byrd Don Chery Chris Callanan Jackie Canfield Cheryl Cavalli 8 Shawn Egan Duane Egging Mark Elliott Tracy Fcnneasy Patrick Fielder Meri Firpo Karen Fiah Mary Flaim Ann DePinto Karri Dickeraon Kathryn Dobba Kriatine Doherty Dan Donohue Mike Doolin Pat Dorria Jill Doatcrt Suaan Dwyer Jenny Eaaon 109 Tammy Fretheim Lentoy Fuimaono Carrie Funk Mike Gallua Joseph Gartin John Garvcr Gary Gaudreau Karen Gaul Jeannette Gibson Mary Rose Goetz Gabriela Gonzelez Roger Grinde Greg Grose Jane Hammett Phil Harpole 110 Ann Harrington Gail Havery Stasia Heidinger Dean Hendrickaon Laurie Hendrickaon Richard Heriza Liaa Herrera John Holland Kim Holahue Tamara Iten Hiroak Twabrchi Linda Jacobaon Carol Johnaon Frank Joaeph III Dan Judge Jim Kammerer Bret Kenfleid Anne Killorin Cindy Klump Kelly Knaff Phil Knowles Yuiko Konishi Dave Koon Chris Kuhr Anne Kurtz Rene LaBare Rafe Lamb Mary Kay Lane David Lechner 112 Liz Lederhos Ray Leeds Joan Lewis Eric Lippke Jason Low Marianne Maes Jim Malek Brett Marshall Sonny Martin Lisa Maxwell Cathleen McCue Laurie McDonald Kitty McGinley David McGoldrick Jack McLaughlin Marty Melster Janine Micheletti Darby Miller Sheila Miller Eric Miskow Brad Mitchell Teresa Moore Kerry Moudy 113 Shawn Mulligan Jane Anne Munshower Renee Murphy Mich Myers Nancee Naegeli Tom Neal Rhonda Nagel Roseanne Nichols Elain Noonan Kristi Norr Teresa Otto Greg Palmer George Nwanyanw Kathleen O'Connor Tara O'Connor Dave Olsen John O'Neill Albert Olszewski 114 Jim Pfarr Polly Phillips Loreen Phillips Maureen Pohlen Bill Preuninger Wanda Putnam Matt Redinger Debbie Regan Mike Regan Jim Richerson 115 Ken Rogers Marcie Rosenow Sandra Ross Connie Rudolph Sean Russell Joe Ryan 8heila Ryan Mikiko Sakakibara David Salmassy Ayman Saudi Satinee Schaack Paula Schafer Becky Schaff Peg Schimeer Andy 8chultz Catherine Ries Signe Ringbloom Teresa Ritter Patty Roche 116 Dino Seim Damien Sillstrop Teri Skinner Debbie Smith Rick Smith John State Dawn Stewart Karen Stoken Kim Stott Laurie Stromberg Julie Stronsnider Michael Sullivan Frank Tabi h Anne Tapp Patrick Tennis Greg Tierney Glenn Tremper Mark Troy Cindy Trunkle Alice Velarde Peter Walther Fred Welch Jackie White Maureen Wilson Roberta Winch Ralph Yaeger Hisatsugo Yamamura John Ysursa Chris Zirbel 117 The class of 1985 made their debut into college life under the leadership of DelRae Aus. president: Ken Fry. vice-president; Karol Pung. treasurer: and Tracy O'Shea, secretary. A little country was shown in the hayride put together by Sue Orham and the Orham family. Two class swims were held to get to know one another and have a splash. They were organized by John Ramirez and Cindy Olszewski. Chris Herriges, Ken Fry. DelRae Aus. Tracy O'Shea, and Karol Pung acted out the freshman Christmas skit. An ice cream social proved to attract many hungry freshman. A retreat was sponsored with the help of John Ramirez. Rich Westhoff. Sister Mary Jo Quinn, and Mr. John Downs. The Season Carroll's Fighting Saints came away from the 1981 football season with an impressive record of 7-3 and the Frontier Conference title. The Saints dominated their opponents both during and after the season by achieving a 54) record in coference play and placing seventeen men on the All-Conference Team. The season began with the young Saints stopped short by north Dakota's Minot State. Tied after regulation time, Minoteeked out a 17-10 win in double overtime. The Saints had better luck with Ricks College beating them 27-14. Carroll however took a bath when they played their next game against Eastern Washington, losing 0-51. The Saints got back on the winning path by pumelling inter conference rival Rocky Mountain College 34-6. The 1981 football coaches are: Frist row (pictured left to right) — Rory Swan, offensive back: Bob Petrino. head coach; and Mark Schulte, offensive quarterback receiver. Second row — Pat Schulte, defensive line; John McDonell. offensive line; and Steve Ahmann. defensive front. Game number five saw Carroll traveling to Butte to take on Montana Tech. The saints managed to blow away Tech in the First five minutes of play. The final score was 37-28, with Car-roll managing another victory. A week later came the Carroll-Rocky rematch, with Carroll scoring early in the game to win 20-10, bringing Carroll's record to 4 and 2. Western Montana visited Vigilante Stadium the following Saturday. Again the Saints sparkled as the Bulldogs spent the afternoon in the doghouse. Carroll took on Chadron State for our Homecoming game. An early lead gained by capitalizing on mistakes enabled the Saints to enjoy a 28-7 half time lead. Although the second half was marred by a series of errors the Saints blew Charon away 4222. Western's rematch here in Carroll country brought tragedy for the Saints. Quarterback Bob Petrino suffered a separated shoulder, taking him out of the game to be replaced by converted defensive back Joe Robinson who salvaged a 24-21 win. Robinson’s magic didn't fool Montana Tech in the season finale. Seeking revenge for the early season defeat, the Tech team took advantage of poor timing and turnovers to triumph 15-30. The 7-3 season, with its highlights and disappointments, upped Coach Petrino's career wins to 63 and gave a good indication of next year’s potential, when it is hoped that Car-roll College will retain that conference crown. Outstanding individual performances were turned in by many members of both the offensive and defensive units. Junior Bob Petrino was the Saints' offensive leader. His running of Carroll's option offense and accurate passing earned him the award of Conference MVP, despite missjng most of the last two games being out with an injury. Running back Craig MacKenzie led the team in rushing with a season total of 858 yards and an average gain of 4.75 yards per carry. Scott Davis led Carroll's Corrop of receivers, snagging thirty-six receptions for 684 yards and 5 touchdowns. Carroll's defense also had its outstanding members. Linemen John Daly and Frank Petrusha, anchored the defensive line while linebackers Joe Kriskovich and Steve Picad turned in an admirable performance throughout the season. Robinson led the team with six interceptions despite playing almost two games as quarterback. Phil Suek used his foot to propell the Saints to victory on several occassions. He set a school record with his five field goals and achieved a respectable 84% in extra point conversions. All in all, Carroll had a great season and is expecting to do just as good next year. 137 Pictured standing (left to right) are — Ann DePinto, Cheryl Coach Brown. Lady Saints Volleyball The Lady Saints Volleyball team finished their season with a 5-17 record. 3-6 in conference play. Inexperience and injuries combined to keep the Lady Saints off the winning track. With three starting freshman, Carroll had a tough time against their opponents, many of whom were upper division teams. Lead by captain Cheryl Cavalli. the Lady Saints placed three members on the All-Conference 2nd Team. Cavalli, Ann DePinto. and Denise Downs all received this Honor. 138 139 Men's Basketball Carroll Men's Basketball team enjoyed a season of highs and lows. The roller coaster ride started slowly as Carroll droped seven of their first thirteen games. Return ing from the Christmas Break, the roundballers caught everyone's attention with a 100-70 win over Western Montana College. Their victory put Carroll on the winning track as the team began to string together home court wins. At one point, the Saints gathered seven in a row, including a crucial 70-61 victory over conference power house College of Great Falls. Carroll lost some stream as the season closed out. finishing 14-13 overall Their 10-5 Frotier Conference record gave them second place and a playoff birth. Post season play was cut short, however, by a disappointing 75-56 loss to W.M.C. 140 141 The Season Carroll College 62 Lethbridge 56 Carroll College 35 Gonzogo 57 Carroll College 62 Lewis 6 Clark 61 Carroll College 74 Eastern Oregon 79 Carroll College 64 Lewis 0 Cork 65 Corroll College 85 Eosrern Monrono 88 Carroll College 68 Northwest Nozorene 78 Corroll College 75 College of Idaho 72 Corroll College 74 Minor Store 77 Corroll College 82 Dickinson Store 67 Corroll College 47 Univ. of Montano 78 Corroll CoHege 68 Northern Monrono 78 Corroll College 69 College of Gr. Psalm 118:24 Editor's Note The production of this yearbook was not always smooth and easy, whatever could go wrong did. Despite the rough spots. I was very blessed with the support and time of many talented people; Fr. Hightower, the ASCC, Fr. Hillen. Jim Bartruff and the Development Office. A few special acknowledgements are due; Gina Larson for her gorgeous color prints, my brother, Scott, for his hours in the dark robm, and most especially to my staff. They have given so much of their time and themselves into the Hilltopper. The times we shared together are remembered now only in my mind. A small but important part, shaping today's world with yesterday's memories. Another chapter in the unwritten biography of my life, never to be experienced again, remembered only in my mind. George Betts Words don't seem quite adequate, yet I offer a most sincere thank you. God Bless. Kristi 160
