Leslie Ritter hikes up to the camp ground. 8 Pock tup Pack trip acquaints new students A pack trip into the Bob Marshall Wilderness area started the academic year for more than 70 students. The White Tail Dude Ranch Packing Company provided the food and cooking for the trip and had the camp site set up by the time the students had hiked the six miles into the location. The Associated Students of Carroll College organized the pack trip and provided a reldxing atmosphere for freshmen to become acquainted with their classmates. The time on the trip was spent exploring, laughing. participating in sing-alongs and skits, and above all making friends. Bishop Curtiss performs the offertory. 2 Mail or mo Holy Spirit Mass of the Holy Spirit The Mass of the Holy Spirit was celebrated on September 9th at the St. Helena Cathedral. The celebrant for the mass was Bishop Elden F. Curtiss while concelebrants were Rev. J. Eugene Peoples. Rev. Daniel B. Shea. Rev. Francis J. Wiegenstein and Rev. William M. Stanaway. who also served as homilist. The Master of Ceremonies was John Robertson. lectors were Karry Kottas and John Mike Sullivan, Marc Horton acted as cross-bearer, and acolytes were Greg McCormick and James Smith. The Carrolleers directed by Joseph W. Munzenrider performed the music and the organ was played by John O'Leary. The mass was followed by the all school picnic. The football team, from the beginning of the season, had to combat injuries as well as competing in games. The 36.000 square-foot two-story building was constructed as a result of a five-year fundraising campaign by the college. Designed under an open concept, the library includes individual and group study rooms, listening and typing rooms, a student lounge, a browsing room, open periodical shelves, a large processing area and has capabilities for the use of future electronic equipment. Saga 25 Intramural football The ladies By virtue of the California playoff the St. Charles-St. Albert's women's team out distanced the 3rd Old-Ground Floor team by about five yards to capture the women's intramural football title. The Charlie's-Al's team went into the playoffs with a 4-2 record and continued to defeat the 2nd Old team 19-6 and 2nd New 13-0 winning a spot In the championship game. The object of the contest was to design a structure for one uncooked egg so that it would survive a free fall from the balcony of St. Charles to the steps below. The structure could be made of wooden matches, wooden toothpicks, string, rubberbands. paper and-or glue. Winners were judged on whether the egg survived the fall, on originality of the design, and on creative use of color and materials. Debbie Court won first place with a score of 9.9 as her entry. “Suicidal Sibyl landed safely on the steps below. Taking second place were Rosie Walsh and Fr. Joe Pelletier with their egg called “The Suicide Scrambler which scored a 9.7. Third place went to Luke Larson and his egg Harvey Edgar Egbert who scored a 9.3. 6« Clockwise: Fr. Elena Ross shoots tor two. 74 Womens Bosfcetoall Lady Saints first in conference The womens basketball team captured first place in the Frontier Conference to advance to regionals where they took third. The Lady Saints at regionals were defeated in their first game by the University of Idaho. They then went on to conquer the University of Alaska in their first overtime of the season. Team captain Shelley Mitchell was named a member of the five place regional tournament team. Team members are selected at the discretion of the coaches. The Saints finished the season with a 9-3 conference tally and an overall record of 19-9. Some of the activities sponsored by ASCC included the freshman pack trip and running freshman class officer elections at the beginning of the year. The Carrolleers first performed at the Mass of the Holy Spirit soon after school started. Then, before Christmas, sang at the Advent Service and serenaded the college and community with Christmas carols. A special concert for the college, a performance at the CYC convention and singing with the Choir filled time second semester. The Choir started their season singing at an advent service before Christmas. They then sang at the Tenebrae Service and performed with the Spokane Symphony, twice in Helena and once in White Sulfer Springs. The Choir's final performance was at the Baccalaureate Mass. The Spurs spent the week before scheming up contests, seeking out contestants and asking local merchants for prizes. The contests invented were: ice cream eating, marshmallow stuffing, jello snarfing, Mr. Legs and peanut rolling to name a few. Following the contests and drawings the students were entertained by The Shoe String Band.
