Carroll's first setback came at the hands of powerful Minot State of North Dakota by the score of 31-14. Next week the Saints travelled to Rexburg, Idaho where they were beaten in a close game by Ricks College 13- 6. At this point things looked dim for Carroll. They had lost their first two games and the following week they had to open the Frontier Conference season against the Eastem Montana Yellowjackets in Helena. The Carroll defense shined. They picked off two Eastern passes and recovered two fumbles limiting the Yellowjackets to 120 total yards and one touchdown. Despite two Saint fumble recoveries, the offense was unable to produce more than 7 points. Carroll's record now stood at l-3. What had looked like a cham- pionship year, now appeared very dismal. The only plus up to now was the running of fullback Dan Rambo, who in the Carroll victory over Eastern rushed for over 200 yards. At a time when all had given up hope for the success of the Saints, the team outplayed Dickinson State of North Dakota. They won 27-7 in North Dakota. The Carroll defense forced Dickinson into 5 fumbles and two interceptions for a total of seven turn- overs. The offense provided four touchdowns and the Saints looked like a completely rejuvenated outfit. Their record now stood at l-l in conference play. The Saints were at home against the Orediggers from Montana Tech. This was a must game for Carroll. Last year they had lost a heartbreaker to Tech in Butte by the score of 10-7. The Saints were out for vengeance. Also the past few homecoming games for Carroll had been winless. The coaches were up, the team was up. and the students were up. Before a packed stadium the Saints completely outclassed Tech. They rolled up a 17-I3 victory. The Carroll defense again sparkled. They forced Tech into three fumbles and limited them to a total of ll4 yards. The offense behind the powerful running and passing of Rod Moore was overpowering. Vengeance had been achieved. ., Al ' . Comeback!! The Saints had done it. After a disappointing start, they had won 4 out of the last 5 games and clinched the Con- ference Championship. Coach Petrino and his team had proven themselves. During the season Dan Rambo rushed for 537 yards and Rod Moore rushed for 392 yards. Jim Von Doehren led the team in passing yardage with 194 yards. In receiving it was Walter Chaney with 12 receptions for 180 yards. Pretty impressive statistics! In the head- lines this year, the Carroll College Fighting Saints under the direction and leadership of Jim Trudnowski and Jim Gross, underwent a satisfying but unsuccessful season. The Saints finished with'a 4-11 conference record, and a 12-16 overall record. The Saints' record doesn't tell the story whereas a number of players received special honors, for their fine play, at the end of the season. With the graduation of 3 seniors. Captain Lou Durante, a 3 yr. starter, Brian Donahue a 2 yr. leaderman, and Jack Waddle a 3 yr. leaderman, the Fighting Saintsw future still looks bright on the hardwood court. The top point producer for the Saints, freewheeler offense was Dave Leslie at an 18.4 a clip. Doing the rebounding chores was Dave Pillalzke who grabbed 12.8 a game while, Fritz Wolk had 8.0 a game. The floor general. who the Saints went to in time of trouble was Lou Durante. All throughout the season, Dave Cleaves did a fine job coming off the bench where towards the middle of the season he broke the starting line up to finish at 12.8 a game. We the students, can be proud of All-League Players Dave Leslie and Dave C leaves who received 2nd Team honors, and Fritz Wolk and Dave Pillatzke who received Honorable mention. Also along the note of receiving honors was Lou Duranze who went to Europe along with other Frontier Starsl' to play exhibition games against 3 European countries. These Stars finished a fine Frontier Conference season with a 17-0 record. fi? X lf . 5. 'W' 35 , rv' r E , Q09 - 0,45 '. av O O, 6 1fO'o ' vc ' :S . 's Q 97 Q.: v'4Q .Q Q 9 . To even up competition, teams were organ- ized by floors in the dorms instead of by friends. St. Charles and Borromeo started off at a good pace with football but fizzled out in the middle of basketball season, when due to comments from several team members, all games that had been played were cancelled and re-scheduled. Spirits were dampened considerably, which resulted in total apathy. In Guad's intramurals, First New were the win- ners' of the Sport's Trophy for winning: Basket- ball, Volleyball, Softball and Swimming, losing only in Football to Second New. Eighteen schools from the Northwest participated in this major forensic tour- Xl. nament. Along with Sajor's first place Dolores Cikrit of Big Sandy took third and veteran Mike Shields of Anaconda, fourth place. The Senior Division debate team of Ed Sheehy, San Francisco, and JoAnne QL'-3 Jordan of Fort Benton took third place in debate. Peggy Mangan of Anaconda was fourth in Oral Interpreta- tion of Literature. Other members of the 1972-73 team include Maggie Mof- fit, Jim McClean, and Peggy O'Malley. Harry Smith, Speech Team Coach, reports that the team's next meet will be here at Carroll on February 9-ll when Carroll is the host of the 1973 Montana State Speech Meet. ONCE ONE HAS ACHIEVED LITERACY, FOR THOSE OF US WHO ARE SUFFICIENTLY MOTIVATED, THERE ARE LIBRARIES AND OTHER RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO HELP ONE LEARN. ALSO THERE ARE TECHNICAL PROGRAMS WHEREBY A PERSON CAN GAIN SPECIAL SKILLS -- TO DO A PARTICULAR JOE AND TO DO IT WELL. THESE PROGRAMS MAY TAKE ONLY A FEW MONTHS TO COMPLETE AND USUALLY COST MUCH LESS THAN A COLLEGE EDUCATION. THESE FACTORS SEEM TODAY TO ARGUE AGAINST THE NEED FOR A COLLEGE EDUCATION. WHAT THE COLLEGE OFFERS THAT IS SPECIAL IS AN ENVIRONMENT TO ASSIST THE STUDENT IN GROWTH TO A GREATER SPIRITUAL, INTELLECTUAL AND SOCIAL MATURITY. WE OFFER HELP TO FACIL- ITATE AN APPROACH TO LIFE ITSELF AND THE MEANING OF LIFEQ THE COLLEGE IS HERE TO ASSIST EACH ONE DEVELOP MORE FULLY AS A PERSON. THE OBJECTIVE HAS NOT BEEN MERELY TO TRAIN YOU TO DO SOME PARTICULAR TASK WELL -- ALTHOUGH YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN ABLE TO ACQUIRE FIRST LEVEL COMPETENCY IN VARIOUS PROFESSIONAL AND ACADEMIC FIELDS. THE OBJECTIVE WAS NOT TO GIVE YOU ANSWERS -- ALTHOUGH YOU HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO ACQUIRE NEW KNOWLEDGE AND DEEPER UNDERSTANDING. AT THE RISK OF OVERSIMPLIFYING, I WOULD SAY THAT ULTIMATELY THE PURPOSE OF THE COLLEGE EXPERIENCE WAS TO HELP YOU LEARN HOW TO ASK THE RIGHT QUESTIONS --- TO HELP YOU ANALYZE A PROBLEM IN ALL ITS ASPECTS -- AND SO TO HELP YOU FIND ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS THAT ARE YET TO BE RAISED. THE COLLEGE EDUCATION AT CARROLL IS DESIGNED TO HELP YOU LEARN HOW TO GO ON LEARNING IN YOUR PARTICULAR FIELD OF INTEREST AS WELL AS TO APPROACH THE UNKNOWN IN OTHER FIELDS. IT IS DESIGNED TO HELP YOU MUSTER ALL AVAILABLE RESOURCES IN YOUR SEARCH FOR KNOWLEDG UNDERSTANDING AND WISDOM, IE THE COLLEGE EXPERIENCE wAS RIGHTLY USED, YOU WILL HAVE ENRIQHED YOURSELF BY ENRICHING OTHERS THROUGH SHARING WHAT YOU HAVE. THIS MEANS HAVING SHARED YOUR CONVICTIONS, YOUR DOUOTS, YOUR PREJUDICES AND BIASES, YOUR QUESTIONS, AND YOUR IDEAS. TO HAVE LOCKED THESE THINGS UP INSIDE YOURSELF WOULD HAVE SELF-DEEEATED THE EFFECTIVENESS or COLLEGE LIFE, TO HAVE SHARED IS THE ADVENTURE OF EDUCATION AT CARROLL COLLEGE. IT IS IN SHARING THAT wE BECOME RICHER PERSONS CAPABLE OF ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS UNDER THE VARIED CONDITIONS AND CIRCUMSTANCES THAT ARISE THROUGHOUT A LIFETIME. FOR THIS ACHIEVEMENT IN EABH STUDENT, WE PLEDGE OUR PRAYERS AND GOOD WISHES FOR EVERY SUCCESS. SINCERELY YOURS, , A W ' REV. JOSEPH D. I-IARIVNGTON PRESIDENT 5. acult and Admznzstratzon -.. ERNEST W. Mr. O'Connell had suffered a stroke and had been hospitalized for nearly two weeks at the time of his death. Mr. O'Connell was 86 years of age. It is not easy to describe the ways in which Mr. O'Connell assisted Carroll College: there is no question but that he was deeply devoted to the college and genuinely interested in her future. So much so that in the later years of his life he gave intensely of his time and generously of his personal resources to help Carroll College become the best in Mon- tanaf' Through a personal gift he made possible the construction of O'Connell Hall which was dedicated in October of 1966. The cost of construction of O'Connell Hall was in excess of eight hundred thousand dollars. O'Connell Hall now serves the College as a beautiful classroom-administration building. truly an architectural gem adorning the front of the campus. Carroll College is particularly proud of this fine facility. With Mr. Al Hibbard and Mr. Bud Galusha, Mr. O'Connell was the initiator of the Carroll College Foundation. a private non-profit organization formed to foster the development of scholarship programs for Carroll students. The Foundation also serves as the vehicle whereby gifts and bequests are received for the benefit of the College and its students. Mr. O'Connell also helped organize a development council for Carroll College. The council is now called the Presi- dent's Council. Mr. O'Connell served as the chairman of the Presidenfs Council, a position he held at the time of his death. He also helped the College by serving on the Investment Committee of the Board of Trustees and as a member of the Board of Trustees of Carroll College Foundation. More than anything else, Mr. O'Connell has been a great source of encouragement for our entire college community. He was thoroughly convinced of the greatness of Carroll College and the strong future the College has for Helena and the State of Montana. When spirits sag, as they might. Mr. O'Connell shared his enthusiasm generously. always H1081 confident in his gentle and persuasive way. In a real sense, Mr. O'Connell is to be classed among the founders of Carroll College in that he did what was needed to help Carroll College adjust to a period which would require that the College be more community oriented. helping Carroll College to serve the whole society as an integral part of the city of Helena and the State of Montana. While we extend our sympathy to Mr. O,Connell's family, we do express our joy and gratitude to God for having given us Mr. O'Connell's friendship. Carroll College is pleased and proud to have had a share in the full life of Nlr. Eddy O'Connell. THE HILLTOPPER STAFF 200 ,X xt 51 T 4 ,- X xx ' B' 3 ' . XXX 3. L , - 1 s l V-'T:f,5::i:g.., . 5 .
