W-Q L. -v i, Sliding back 20 years in time, Homecoming 1971 became immersed in the culture of the 19505 as guys in baggy, pleated pants jitterbugged with ponytailed, bobby-socked girls during the dance Thursday night around the juke box which ushered in the traditional festival. On Friday evening five beautiful and anxious coeds graced the steps of St. Charles as cheers went up when Irene Daly. a sophomore from San Francisco, California. was crowned Homecoming Queen for 1971. The student body then proceeded to the bonfire rally outside the P.E. Center. Their head coach Bob Petrino explained the strategies and intro- duced the Fighting Saints who were anticipating a victorious tangle with Rocky Mountain College of Billings. In order to finish their entries in time. members of classes and clubs hastened back to em- bellish their floats for the upcoming parade. Clistening in the October sun, Helena turned out en masse to see the traditional Homecoming Pa- rade led by Mgr. Brown and Fr. Kirchen as Grand Marshalls. Floats streamed down Last Chance Gulch, supported by the melodious marches pro- vided by the Helena High School Band. Leading the way for their own royalty. the Carroll Pep Band boomed out the school songs in the same tumul- tous spirit which gave them the Spirit Award at the game that afternoon. In a painful defensive strug- gle, the Fighting Saints tied Rocky Mountain 6-6 as an enthusiastic student body cheered them on. A semi-formal dance in the gracious atmosphere of the Colonial Club closed the weekend. but not the memories of Carroll's annual remembrance to her past. l fx 1 1...-1 if: GQ! However the team was actually better than this record showed. After dropping the opener to Dickinson State, Carroll traveled to Minot where they played the Beavers. The game was even all the way before we lost 1412. Homecoming found Carroll ready for Rocky Mountain, but the best the Saints could do was a 6-6 tie against the conference run- ners-up. Against Northern the Saints finally broke into the win column with a 36-19 victory. The following weekend in Butte, Carroll played their finest game of the season against nationally Montana Tech. After out- playing the Orediggers and leading 7-3 the entire game, the Saints fell behind 10-7 in the fourth quarter. Carroll's attempts at an upset were finally spoiled by an interception inside the Tech ten as time ran out. iufgg' I Z v ,-, brv? 7 ' iv 55-gi Y sk 2 4 3 8 .fl 4 Jnlf' I I , 19 L , f .- M' , Z fy if 1 il E - nv- 9' ? , A, , ww . In the last game of the season Carroll lost to Eastern Montana 28-0. As in almost every previous year the Saints had some fine talents on the team and a number of all-conference selections. Noel Cicero again was named to the first team along with John Markovich and Ron Axtman. Frank Ward was also named to the first team as a kicking spe- cialist. Second team selections included john Moffatt, Dean Leary, Rick McElmurry, and Bert Clueckert. , A igahss ,Ji Q4 . on-ggi. 3.31 ik: 4' 1 eg,-A A 'hz HM., ' ' 1 s ,as .Q 4 3 A-I ' F' 'M In l t 'IN' a.-1. 1 -.K -,A J .Lynx-'V , hlhi'f-.834 2 ,f '4 C 9' gi, ig K. ,A 'z f 1 l ' . , , ff at Tv f , 'W I ' ' ' ' f Wf'.1?53?i,gs .,.g.. The Saints would not consistently put together a winning Combination, but throughout the season the team showed fine' tal- ent from various individuals. The Saints finished 2-8 in conferenve play and 9-21 overall. while placing fifth in the eonferenee standings. Despite the losing record Carroll has some fine baslcetlnall play- ers returning for next year. Sophomores Fritz Wolk, Nivk Ranalli and Jay Vogelsang had some fine games this year as did juniors Lou Durante and .lavk Waddle. These players in addition to some other promising players from the junior varsity show promise for the eoming season. Yet, sixty years accompanied by the struggles that must necessarily be the portion of every worthwhile endeavor, and accomplishing with such fruitful results the education of so many young people who here attained success, is no small reason for boasting. It was sixty years ago this past Fall Semester when the first college students were registered at the opening of school on September 12, 1911. Two freshmen were enrolled, Charles J. Cabisch of Helena and Frank W. Carpino of Meaderville. There were sixteen Faculty members for two students. Registration went smoothly and classes began the same day. The curriculum had been studied for over a year before the opening of the College. It embraced in its scope all the branches of business, English, scientific, classical, and philosophical training. though the teaching of all these, because of lack of students, was not put into effect immediately. But the College grew. From time to time the College was beset by great difficulties including limited enrollments when most of its students were called into service during World Wars I and ll, by an earth- quake in 1935 which did extensive damage to the physical plant and by the adverse effects of a decade- long depression in the thirties. These conditions, most of which were nation wide, caused many colleges to close. Throughout years of adversity Carroll College, blessed with a small but dedicated group of priest-faculty and a growing number of equally dedicated lay faculty, gained a reputation for excellence in the prepara- tion of young people for professional and business vocations. The trademark of excellence sustained Carroll College through difficult years. Today, with a coeducational student body of over 1,000, a faculty of seventy and eight buildings on a 54--acre campus, Carroll looks to the seventies with pride in its past accomplishments and confident in its ability to continue to merit the trademark of excellence. From an infant beginning, the College has accomplished much through the formation of leaders for church and state. The curious seek the last resting places of those who have attained success, thinkers seek the place wherein were built strong minds, great hearts, true faith, and ready hands. These virtues invariably find their source in the home, in the kindly and wise guidance of self-sacrific- ing parents, but their development in no small degree is the work and pride of the College that partici- pates in the continuance of the education of the whole man. A college exists to educate individuals, and it serves both individuals and society in so doing. Carroll College looks with pride to her graduates and all her alumni and it is through them that she fulfills her larger mission to the whole of society. F Wifi!-71 9 r N x . MQ v 1, MZ Rr-Lv. H. J. M.A. and uman1t1es The Courses included in the departments of Art, English, lan- guage, music, philosophy, theology and speech and drama give the concrete but flexible foundation of the Division of Arts and Hu- manities. Headed by Chairman Fr. Francis Wiegenstein, this Divi- sion lays down the basis of Carroll's liberal arts education. Con- stantly modified to meet the changing needs of education in our modern world, introduction of new programs and modifications of the established courses of studies were introduced this year. The Art Department complemented the Music Department as it occu- pied the Fine Arts Center in the Fall of 1971. ln the spirit of new innovation, the interdisciplinary program of Integrated Humanities gave a refreshing breath of new life to the Carroll Academic World. Under the coordination of Fr. Hamilton and Sr. Suzanne, 50 specially selected freshmen worked to make a rousing success of an experimental program. Designed to experi- ence the core curricula in a new manner, the students listened to a different lecturer each week introduce them to their special sub- ject matter. Faced with continual essays and special projects, the etudiants of the Humanities exceeded all expectations as they formed a dream into a concrete reality on a pass-fail basis. As a result of this program, a B.A. with an Area of Concentration in Humanities is now offered by Carroll. lt is by programs such as this that the Division of Arts and Humanities clearly illustrates its desire to initiate courses of study designed to fit the student of the ,70s. Whether the Carroll student selects a general course for a more broad liberal arts background or a pre-professional field in the sciences, his needs can always be met by the fine programs offered by the divi- sion. 1970-71 welcomed Mr. Vincent Palese to the faculty whose knowledge of microbiology aided the department of biology in this fast growing field. The Pre-Med Department was rated 3rd finest in the nation this year when compared to other colleges in the nation. This evaluation was based on how many graduates of each school were accepted into medical school and their success once they have begun their rigorous courses of study. Whether the pro- gram be mathematics or 3-2 engineering, 1971-72 proved to be another successful and growing year in Carroll's sciences. v'f 'i JAMES J. MANION, Ph.D. Division Chairman JEAN E.
