Dedication “. . . Men of character arc not the only conscience of society, but in every well-governed state they are its best motive power; for it is moral qualities which, in the main, rule the world . . . S. Similes Overlooking the Helena valley arc two inconspicuous hills, dwarfed in the shadow of the Rockies. Yet upon these hills rise the steeples of the symbols of the Catholic Church of the Helena diocese. The gothic towers of St. Helena’s rise in prayer and the stone arches of Carroll stand in majesty. This hill upon which Carroll stands has been carved throughout the years by the sweating fingers of toil in the construction of beautiful halls of learning. Her family has grown and her fame has spread through the efforts of many, but it owes much to a certain man, who, although he is no longer our beloved shepherd, has done much for the College — the late Bishop Joseph M. Gilmore. Throughout his lifetime, Bishop Gilmore was a dedicated member of Carroll’s family. For throughout his like, he embodied and exemplified the most important jewels of Carroll’s teaching: The Christian outlook that will permeate our very existence . . . the moral values that we have learned to apply to every situation of our lives . . . that which is but the stamp on our souls of the free choices of good and evil we have made and will make throughout our lives. For this is the molding of character. Carroll in its hopes and dreams for the formation of character, stands upon a glorious history of graduates and alumni, laymen and priests, whose lives are a living example of this training. Carroll’s story is likewise the story of the brilliant and dedicated labors of Bishop Gilmore. The Hilltopper, 1962, is a witness to a moment of this history. It is a brief record of the fruits of those dreams and those labors toward the high goals of the formation of Catholic laymen, laywomcn and priests. To this end, to this man’s memory, we humbly dedicate this book.
