However, I haven't been here for sometime and I don't think that there is a member of the present student body who will remember me. I represent a bound memento of two academic years. Mass for a Deceased Pope) page six Pope j oiln XXIII When Angelo Roncoih assumed the Chair of Peter in Rome lcxst November, many said the new Pope was too old for the Papacy and Us crushing duties which grow heavier year by year. But Pope John XXIII has proved such predictions wrong. Already pledged to the promotion of the ideals of his predecessor. saintly Pope Pius XII. Pope John has taken steps which show His initiative, vision and foresight for the Church in a modern world. The eyes of the world will h e turned to Rome next year when a World Council will discuss, before Protestants and schismatics alike, the perplexing problem of Christian unity. Threase. fcoasub o{ Ga-OnjJtUi tosti, Extra-curricular activities on Campus are regulated and co-ordinated with all curricular events by the Board of Co-ordinators, comprised of Student Body members and the Deans of Men and Women. A Calendar of Events is drawn up during the Board meetings and pub-lised monthly through the Student Council. All extra-curricular events must first be voted upon by the Student Council and then taken to the Board where they are scheduled. Senior Doleqate The Confederation of Northwest Catholic College Students is an affiliation of eight north-west Catholic Colleges and Universities, joined together for the purpose of mutual aid and understanding. CN, as it is more familiarly known, has been especially helpful to Carroll this tear due to the distance from the other Confederation members. The contacts, both personal and scholastic, which have been made with the other seven member schools have proved an asset to campus activity. Except for the correspondence earned o. throughout the school year, the bi-annual Congresses are the principal means of contact among the schools. It is both an academic and socta’ club. The primary objective is to promote student Interest in the fields of medicine and dentistry by stimulating the members scientific interests. Monogram Club THE MONOGRAM CLUB Is composed of all those Carroll students who have earned their C letter by participating in football, baskotball. baseball, golf and track undor the coaching of Mr. Jim Deming and athletic director, Father John Hunthausen. Its principal motive is to assist the college in promoting the athletic program and the membors offer their capable assistance to all sporting events that take place at the college. The C chib annually sponsors a Vegas Nite and the Homecoming dance, from, which proceeds go to bettering the athletic program of the college. The club is currently headed by Pat Connors as president. THE SKI CLUB Is composed of Carroll students who ski or who are interested in learning to ski. It is a member of the Northern Rocky Mountain Ski Association and tho National Ski Association. The group's primary purpose is to develop interest in skiing and other winter sport activities at Carroll. The membors make an annual trip to Sun Valley. Idaho over Christmas vacation. They are guests at the Moniana State College Ski Carnival and make various other ski trips. Debate Team THE DEBATE TEAM, starting with only one experienced debater among its ranks this year, went on to represent Carroll at many important and far-flung tournaments. Gaining much experience tho team travelled to the Inland Empire Debate Tournament in Pullman, Washington in December and later to the College of Puget Sound Tyro Tournament in Tacoma. Washington. Carroll gained many new friends and many interested inquiries about its existence. Late in April, the club actively helped in staging the state tournament here and ended a fine soason by participating in the Tau Kappa Alpha Debate Tournament in Missoula in the spring. The Most Pure Heart of Mary Praesiduem of the Legion of Mary is composed of twolve upperclass women, with Rev. Paul Ktrchen as the Spiritual Director and Florence Imlach as President. Tho Legion of Mary is an Organization for the sanctification of its members by prayer and active co-operation under ecclesiastical guidance In Mary's and the Church's work of advancing the roign of Christ. The major works assignments which are done in pairs of girls are teaching religion to the girls at the State Vocational School and working with tho children at St. Joseph's Home. Under this title Jim has the responsibility of coaching football, basketball, and baseball. As the first year comes to an end Jim is pleased with the progress he has made insofar as he is teaching the boys a new style of ball, different-from that which they were used to in previous years. As far as the teams are concerned they are young and the prospects look very bright. We of the ‘'Hilltopper staff are happy to welcome Jim to Carroll and wish him all the success in the world. As you know, our primary purpose in student government is directing extra-curricular activities so that each student can better develop himself intellectually as well as socially. We feel that these activities are of vital importance in helping Carroll College to graduate well-rounded persons. Although some of our activities may not seem beneficial at the present, all of them are designed for your benefit now, and in the years to come. We have encouraged your participation; indeed only you can decide what is best for you. For the most part, I commend you on your support. As I see it, one of the greatest demands that society makes on college students is for them to be leaders, defending what is best for the whole. An apathetic attitude is not a good policy for anybody to possess. There are many in the world today waiting to take advantage of this type of person.
