September has now come and gone and 1956-57 has turned out to be the happiest year of our lives - and the shortest. It was a year of anticipation and one of rememberingg a year when wonderful new friendships were made and old ones strengthened. How fast the days flew! There was much excitement and little boredomg vast expenditures of money and great diffi- culty in getting it. In this book we have tried to capture this exciting year- the high moments Cnotlthe lowljg the victories and the fun, forgetting the defeats, disappointments, and anxieties. Dedication .... This quotation expresses the philosophy and pattern of life of our late coach, Ralph Zahniser, the dearly beloved Zahny , who thought character far more important than victory on the playing field. The following pages picture the last Carrick team to play under the guidance of the Father of the Triadic , the last squad to train under this ardent teacher of character and fairplay. They, as well as the entire student body, will always remember the great Zahniser spirit. Mr. Zahniser, a gentleman in de- mand as a speaker, was loved for his sincerity. We will never forget his moving speeches at our assemblies and banquets. Zahny , the friend, loved his boys , teaching them to play sports cleanly and courageously, praising them in victory, cheering them in defeat Ralph Zahniser, the sculptor, was noted for his talented works, gaining particular recognition for his sport figures. Zahny spent many hours modeling figures of relatives and friends. Pilots of the Raiders through a successful season are Carrick's co-captains, tackle Bob Fied- ler, and center Ron Tritschler. Winning Teams Resulted Carrick fans shouted with joy as Frank Heinecke smashed across from the two yard line, making the first score in the Carrick-Westinghouse City Cham- pionship Game. During the tenseness of halftime, Coach A1 Davic talks to the Raider team. Standing to the right are Tom Sertik, Cin coatj Ed Michaels, and Don Taylor. In the foreground are Paul Papariello, Mike Frank, and Bill Bracken. The life of the 1956 Raiders actually began on August 25, the opening of Make-'em - or - Break -'em week atCamp Kon-O-Kwee, near Zelienople. During the week at camp the Raiders saw visions of future success as they crushed Mars High, a class A school, in scrimmage. These visions began to come true as Carrick met New Castle with boldness and brawn. Beaten by only one point, the Raiders left the double A school and went on to blank out Brentwood's Spartans, 20-0. Hopes of defending the Triadic Championship, however, fell as Carrick bowed out to an ex- perienced Baldwin team. Onward to victory, they trounced Langley by a 23-0 score, and edged out Allegheny 21-19 by a last minute field goal mastered by Frank Heinecke. Then, in the absence of Coach Zahniser, who had been taken to the hospital, his Golden Raiders managed only a 14-14 tie with Perry's Commodores. But there was heartbreaking news to come. OnOctober 20th, the day after the Perry tie, Carrick players and fans got word that Ralph Zahniser, their beloved coach, had died of a heart attack. But on they went. Though saddened by their loss, the Raiders fought as hard as ever, now under the leadership of Coach Al Davic. And with vigor they toppled Oliver and then Fifth Avenue. They now reigned as Section Two Champs, and were preparing for the forthcoming battle with Westinghouse, the battle for the City Championship. However, as in the two years previous, Carrick came out Discussing Raider strategy, Coaches Al Davic and Earnest Slessinger confer with manager John Milten- berger. Coach Slessinger, former Fifth Avenue mentor, will be head coach for Carrick teams of the future. During the years he was at Taylor Alderdice, his teams twice defeated Westinghouse in playoff football games. second best, as Westinghouse was the 20-6 victor. George Pfeil triumphed in both the fifty and one hundred yard free style. Dale Pinkerton placed first in the one hundred yard butter- fly event. Both boys qualified for the city finals. At the city finals held at the Allegheny High pool, Admiral Pfeil captured both the fifty yard and one hundred yard free-style events for the Blue and Gold. He swam the fifty yard free-style in record time being clocked at 25.4 seconds. Pinkerton placed third in the one hundred yard butterfly event, losing to the Rose brothers from Schenley High School who may be state champions. Organized by Coach Zahniser in 1943, the club has continued to live up to its name by condi- tioning our athletes and enabling us to compete against much larger schools with higher en- rollment and better facilities. Pledging in part to 'be a good citizen and a good sport' and 'to uphold the fighting tradition of Carrick High School, boys in the club also practice and keep in condition for all sports. It is usually formed at the beginning of the spring semester, and members meet every day after school. This year's Conditioning Clubwas handled by coaches Earnest.Slessinger and Alexander Davic. As an after school clubthe eighty members were Cindefmen Ed Michaels and Dave Degenhafdt occupied primarily with practice for track meets. are pictured here in starting position. Our school life had great variety, and all of it will long be remembered. The jump, or modernized jitterbug, was keen with Carrickites, whether seventh graders or seniors, who hoped to win a prize in the jump contest at the Mid-year Hop. Thisis the traditional dance sponsored by the yearbook staff. The highlights of this year's dance were the waltz and the jump contests. Good sports, our gay young teachers waltzed with dash and grace, while the students and their dates participated in the jump contest. Gold loving cups were awarded to the winners of each contest. All the proceeds were turned over to the Carrickter staff to defray yearbook expenses. The Eighth Grade Here are the lads and lasses who give the most enthusiastic support to all activities. The seniors count on them to swell the crowd at money-making affairs, to buy and sell play and dance tickets, and to back the cheering section at sports events. These studentshold their own on the academic end too. The class of '61 also has energetic members in the junior council and orchestra. Our hats are off to the eighth grade, a busy group of young teen-agersl The Seventh Grade What a change comes over the timid little new comers when they enter from Concord and Quentin Roosevelt. Watching them, we re- member our seventh grade days - how we stared in awe at the towering basketball players, beautiful senior girls, and terrifying teachers. Our little pets at first, the seventh TROPHY CASE The trophy case, recently redecorated by Mr. Kerschbaumer, fascinates the younger set. Perhaps they think, 'Someday l'll help put a trophy there.' The newest addition, contributed by the football team, is the section award in football. Some happy day Pa Pitt's Hat will rest here again. graders soon are lost in the shuffle. At noon we duck their snowballs, stand back as they race down the auditorium aisles, and laugh at their playful antics. We think this particular group is pretty special in spite of their youthful pranks. We even borrowed one for the class play! I Uffering Us Guidance And Wisdom THE FACULTY e Uur Friends, leading Us Along The Right Path How seldom do we find our principal, Mr. Carl G. Brackmann, taking time out to sit down and readl Always on the go, he's here, there, and everywhere. At his desk at 7:30 daily, he might have a faculty committee meeting at 8:00, interview a parent with a wayward son at 8:15, or meet with a student committee working on a pressing problem at 8:30. Sobegins a typical day for our kindly principal. He lends a willing and interested ear to stu- dent problems, is always accessible, and is never too busy to answer a question - he's even been known to take detention hall. Our principal and our friend, Mr. Brackmann appears at football games, sometimes going on the bus with the band. At the SnowBall, the Prom, and the shelter house dances, he is a smiling and amiable guest. Mr. James E. Tomb, vocational coun- selor, is advising student DianaPere11a. Mr. Tomb is always ready to help any student, whether to find a job, choose a college, or merely fill out a schedule. He's a very special friend to the seniors. Assemblies, banquets, committees,dra- matics, and so on through the alphabet clear down to X-rays, Miss Marion Clark, girls' adviser, assists in every activity. Which folder could she be con- sidering now? lighting llur Way Through High School 'Oh my starsl' exclaims Miss Gerry Vogel, something seems to have gone wrong. Miss Vogel one of the office staff, is prepar- ing the daily bulletin. Hers is the cheerful and pretty voice that you heard when you answered the phone that day you 'played sick . 'Why aren't you at school Blue suit, blue tie, blue eyes-- that's our Mr. Holmes. He's a Navy man, natch, and spent two weeks this year doing his reserve training in Louisiana. We missed him at lunch hour, holding back the galloping starvelingsg checking the boys' washrooms, detention hall delin- quents, and out-of-class villians. As vice principal, MI. Holmes plays a very important part in our school, and we seniors appreciate him. Here he is in his office where many a momentous interview takes place behind closed doors--where justice and mercy meet daily, and where In addition to her countless of- fice duties, Mrs. Betty Cheskey, school secretary, measures the graduating seniors for caps and gowns. Paul Starzynski, mid- year graduate, seems to find the project painful. Our crack chief clerk is also in charge of the school bank, which handles all many a problem is solved. Mrs. Mary Brandtone is proud of her newly remodeled hook- room. You'11 always have the books you need with her on the job. Streetcar riders recognize her as the pass seller. money from school activities. A Staff Uf Forty Guided Us Did you read this? Mr. Pederson asks his fellow science teachers Mr. Smith and Mr. Replogle. Who would ever guess that these amiable, benign looking gentlemen are the villains responsible for those hideous general science, biology, physics, and chemistry tests! Viva el espanol! Miss Louise Winegar, Carricks only Spanish teacher, delights in ac- quainting her students with the speech, cus- toms, and dress of our South American neighbors. She also teaches English, and sponsors the Tri-Hi-Y Club and the Com- mencement committee. This is a tough onel' ad- mits Miss Stewart. Mrs. Ellsworth and Mr. Herzog are forced to agree after offering theorems and for- mulas which fail to help her. Mr. Vesley, who finds his students more easily confused, has resorted to his most difficult problems in an attempt to stump these fellow math teachers. 'Where does this part go? puzzles Mr. Dimperio, as he and Mr. Robbins examine ablue print drawn by Mr, Dittmar. Mr. Dittmazgmechanical drawing instructor, teaches the boys how to draw the plans, while Mr. Robbins and Mr. Dimperio guide them in constructing their shop projects. Miss Helen Yerger teaches future homemakers how to economize by tailoring their own clothes In her classes our lasses learn about textile textures, wise pattern-picking, and proper fitting techniques, as well as become models for our annual fashion show. Here Miss Yerger demon- strates to student Arthelia Lang how to use the sewing machine. Ready, get set-GOl com- mands Mr. Ashbrook as Mrs. Rhodes and Miss Swavel match their skill in a timed typing test. Mr. Ashbrook stands by, ready to record the results. All teach commercial courses. American government, United States history, world history, economics, and sociology broaden our horizons and make us think. We learn in Mr. Schnupp's sociology classes much more than the text book contents, considering problems of marriage, housing, and children. We learn to cast aside prejudices, and to think of all men as broth- ers. Often much we hear in the classroom bores us, and history courses sometimes seem far away and useless. But when a marriage or juvenile de- linquency discussion comes up -- what interest, what participation, what ideas Ill It looks as if our teachers are playing school! Miss Witkowski receives quite a lot of attention from fellow English teach- ers as she types up her theme. Mr. Black, an ex-typing instructor, comments on her typing ability, while Mr. Curry and Mr. Evans look for errors in spelling and punctuation. Teaching Us More Than Here they are, the athletic three. Coach Al Davic and Ed White, faculty manager of sports, show the newcomer and head coach, Earnest Slessinger, the brand- new dressing rooms. These newly reno- vated quarters for boys' sports nowhave light green tile walls, modern plumbing and ventilation, as well as an office and quarters for the coaches. Mr. Bell is showing history comrade Mrs. Fisher the charts entitled Our Congress , and 'Some of our Presi- dents , created by one of his students, About two hundred underclassmen sit in the classes of each of these teachers daily. They study social studies with Mr. Bell and world history with Mrs. Fisher. lust Subject Matter After years of squalor the black hole of Calcutta' has become a thing of beauty and, we hope, a joy forever. Mrs. Kathryn Simms is partly responsible for thisim- provement in the girls' sports depart- ment. Here our girls' health ed. instruc- tors, Mrs, Simms, and Mrs. Schaupp, are talking to Janet Fleck and Diana Perella in their new office. Three, two, one, zero - You're on , times Mrs. Ethel Hubbard, as Mr. M. Franklin Dotts stands by ready to record his favorite poem. Most seniors will recall recording their voices on the tape recorder - remember those crazy commer- cials we taped in Mr. Dotts' classes! Relaxing now, these senior high English teach- ers, Mrs. Hubbard and Mr. Dotts, devote most of their time to correcting faulty themes, and drill- ing spelling and grammar rules and sentence structure. Through their efforts, we have become acquainted with poetry and literature and have learned how to organize our thoughts and express ourselves. And these friendly English teachers make learning enjoyable! s-.,,,a6 Could our two temperamental mus- icians Mr. Greco and Mr. Pavlot be planning a program for Family Night? Each has his own special grief - Mr. Greco trains aspiring musicians and leads the band, while Mr. Pavlot suffers with the erring senior boys who elect chorus as a snap course. Our witty art teacher, Donn Kersh- baumer, is at it again. Drawing cartoon sketches is a fancy of his. His model is Phyllis Canci11a.Do you see the resem- blance? Nothing is ever too much trouble for our young art teacher. He'll drop everything to make poster, stage sets, or puppets. llffering Us Friendship Now, now, no passing notes, gir1s , reprimands librarian Miss Elizabeth Makin. Caught in the act are seniors Carol Forster and Shirley Rump. Miss Makin is always willing to help a student find material for a speech or report, or recommend a good book. Dieticians, Mrs. Riemer, and her staff work feverishly to prepare sandwiches for the hungry students who will soon come storming down to lunch. Many varieties of food are prepared by our energetic cafeteria staff, yet always most popular are mashed potatoes with gravy and the delicious rolls. nd Understanding Do you like statistics? Here is the 1957 census of our faculty. Of the forty people on the Carrick faculty, three were here when the building first opened. Five have taught fewer than five years. Fifteen are women and twenty-five are men. Seven ofthe women are married and all of the men save two. At least twelve of our faculty members supple- ment their income with other jobs at night. There are thirty-six faculty children and eight grand- children. In addition to the teaching staff, we have four clerks, one a library c1erk,oneabook clerk, one an assistant secretary, and our top secretary. Also helping with the operation of our school are these important people: the custodian, dietician, and swimming matron - each with various assistants. Visiting the school on spe- cific days are the doctor, nurse, speech teacher, hearing specialist, and attendance officer. Thank you, Mr. Walls and Mrs. Knight, for the fine care you take of us.You keep us warm and comfortable, Mr. Walls, and we are grateful. Sara and Mrs. Knight wash and mend for us, as well as guard the swimming classes. Here are Carrick I-ligh's nominees for the Best Father of the Year awards. They are the new fathers Greco, Black, Vesely, and Davic, as well as Grandfather Brackmann. All, during thislast year, were blessed with tiny bundles from heaven. These We Associate With Our Senior Year Off with the old and on with the new! The old The fad which marked our senior year was the velveteen drapes which had previously adorned the wearing of Ivy League outfits. Here, Carol Schumn, auditorium windows were replaced by new plastic Judy Neundorf, and Norb Lippert show the style ones. which every cool and informed senior wore. Along with the happiness of our senior year, grief The political high spot of Carrick's 1956-7 history crept into the hearts of every student. At two occurred in November. For the first time, since o'clock on Tuesday afternoon, October 23, while we entered these halls, Carrick voted Republican services were being held in the funeral home, Tom in the presidential election.
