THE 1966 TARPON Published by the Students of Carrabelle High CARRABELLE, FLORIDA Dedication The 1966 Tarpon is proudly dedicated to the steamship TARPON, which made a continuous run for thirty-four years from Mobile, Alabama to Carrabelle, stopping for freight and passengers in Pensacola, Panama City, and Apalachicola. The Tarpon played an important role in the life of each of these little Gulf Ports because twice a week she brought them mail, merchandise, supplies, and provided an essential means of transportation. W. S. Barrow, her well known and well liked captain, was noted for the efficiency and order with which he managed his boat and crew. The Tarpon had been out of commission only twice in her career of service, once because of a fire which broke out at the old Tarpon Dock in cane. The Tarpon's luck ran out for good on the first day of September, 1937. A stiff northeast gale which became a full fledged storm by nightfall caught the ship after she left Pensacola for Panama City. Bucking rough seas, the First Mate, who was at the wheel, attempted to beach her near Panama City Beach. When little headway was made, the Captain ordered the boat turned around. Shortly thereafter the selfish sea took her down; she was about nine miles from shore. Thirteen of the crew survived the sinking and eighteen died, among them Captain Bar-row. The majority of those who died were below deck and had no time to get out of the ship before she sank; there were implications that the freighter had been too heavily loaded. THE TARPON: Proud Queen of the Coastal Waters. . . People could almost set their watches by her punctual arrivals. The Annual Staff of Carrabelle School wishes to express its appreciation to Mr. Willie McKnight, an oiler who survived the sinking of the TARPON, for his assistance in gathering information contained in this dedication and to the TALLAHASSEE DEMOCRAT, which provided the picture of the TARPON seen above.
