Text from Pages 1 - 60 of the 1957 volume:

The Seniors of 1957 wish to dedicate this edition of The Tarpon to Miss Martha Pugh. We appreciate her loyalty to us throughout Junior and Senior years when others turned us down. Sometimes we made her regret her decision, but she still stood by us. So all the Seniors join in saying: Thank you, 'Chief, ' for making our last two years in school joyful years. TO THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1957: Three men were making a trip into an unknown country. One was not very enthusiastic about the trip in the first place. The second man had cajoled him into coming along because of his own enthusiasm, while the third had planned carefully for the journey. The men came to a river over which there was no bridge. The first man who was so overwhelmed by the problem of crossing that the words of his friends could no longer overcome his apathy. He picked up his few belongings and started on the way back. The second man, full of enthusiasm, immediately plunged into the stream swimming strongly. However, in his rush he failed to take into consideration the heavy pack on his back, and when he reached the middle of the stream he tired and sank from sight, never to reappear. The third man, after careful preparation pushed on and successfully crossed to the other side where he became a famous man. As you leave school you are taking a trip into an unknown country. How will you act when you come to your first river of no bridge ? Good luck to each of you on your journey. W. R. Durden MRS. KATHRYN STUBBS Eighth Grade English MR. C. Gathered here today, I see many of my former schoolmates who have quite a large part in this history-making event. The President of the United States, Raymond Williams, will christen the FIRST rocket expedition to the moon. The head designer of this beautiful rocketship is Mrs. Donna McKnight Page, who began experimenting with rocket power soon after she married the brilliant nuclear scientist. Hunter Page. Her very capable assistants are Dr. Melba Messer, Professor Geraldine Cumbie, and Mrs. Ruby Glass. Mrs. Glass is hoping her six boys will become interested in science. The rocket is being launched from the fabulous estate of Mrs. Josephine Underdown and he husband, Jack. They are the multi-millionaires who financed the expedition. Mrs. Genevieve Putnal and her husband, Bus, who owns the chain of Gulf Oil Companies all over the world are interested onlookers. Jean Sapp and Betty Miller are here together. Jean is a famous model in New York and is still posing for the many photographers here. Betty is still using her maiden name, after all, that's the name that made Miller's Stables famous all over the country. She owns the best thoroughbred horses in the world. Vic Gander, the service manager of the Rocket X is having a last check before take-off. He wants to be sure that the four brave men who will fly the Rocket X, Major Francis Daniels, Captain Jerry Crum, Captain J. P. Barber, and Captain Monroe Register will be completely safe throughout their trip. Walking across to the platform with them to wish them good luck are Miss Bonnie Langley and Miss Joan Clark. They have just flown in from Paris where they are having a gigantic showing of their latest creations. Their dress shops across the continents have made them millionaires. Five seconds until blast-off. . .4. . .3. . .2. . .1. . .They’re off! Good Luck and God Bless you.
