HANCOCK is in the background while CARPENTER maneuvers into position to use her fire hoses on the smouldering Japanese fishing boat DIGO SANIVII MARU Number 5. On the way back home to Pearl, we stopped of jirst in Yokosuka, japan, where tempera- tures in the thirties and forties made it seem like the South Pole after a winter of ninety degrees on Yankee Station. From there we proceeded to Mz'dway Island, home of the goony birds, for a one day refueling stop. But the real excitement occured 900 miles ojjf the coast japan, while we were in picket station for the carrier Hancock. We were called to help ,light a jire aboard a small japanese fishing boat... The gutted interior of the fishing boat. All 14 crew members took to lifeboats and were picked up by another one of the de- stroyers in company, USS Bausell QDD-8453. The boat was towed back to Japan by other fishing boats in the area, which answered the SOS.
