46fSports I957-l982: Carolina High school began with the combining of three area high schoolsf Wel- come, West Gantt, and Wesse- ville. This meant a lot of adjust- ments for sports-oriented stu- dents. One of these students was Jim- so my Gentry, l957 football and basketball captain. His athletic excellence played a big part in Carolina's sports program. He remarked about changes he felt had occured in the past twenty- five years: A stronger sense of dedication was present in players. Teens, these days, are not as willing to sacrifice fun to bring their ath- letic talent to its full potential. Also, the teams seemed more united and set toward one goal. Concerning spirit . . . Pep Ral- lies and bon fires were weekly events. This stirred up a lot of school spirit and pride. Now days events of this sort are limited and this cuts down on the spirit and pride found in the student body. The sports program at Carolina has been an outlet in which stu- dents can take pride, in each of the twenty-five years of the school's existence.
