I68fOrganizations Jewell James Estes, class of l97O, was a member of the first Civin- ette club at Carolina in I967. Mr. Cecil Edwards, who taught history, and Mr. Mickey Long originated the club, and with the help of the faculty, twelve girls were selected to make up the first club. Activity-wise the year began slowly, but by spring the pace had picked up. The year was highlighted by a trip to a Civitan convention in Myrtle Beach. Jewell recalls being afraid to ride the roller coaster. Mr. Long reassured her and even rode along with her the first time, but she remembers being terrified despite his coaxing. There were no old members to initiate Jewell and her eleven co-members. The next year. however, the twelve veterans each took a new girl and thus began the well-known Civinette initiation rites. In the years since Jewell James Estes first became a Civinette, the organization has grown in activities and service for the school and community.
