Mrs. Ossie Ware Mitchell, President Birmingham Board of Education I am delighted to have the opportunity to greet you as you reach another milestone in your preparation and development. Commencement marks a beginning, and I would strongly urge each of you to begin very definite preparation by continuing your studies beyond the high school level. In order to live a happy and successful life, you must develop both your mind and your heart. Broad horizons filled with unlimited opportunities await the men and women qualified to serve in solving the problems of mankind. The world needs persons of high character and intellectual brilliance. Prepare today for tomorrow’s opportunities! Congratulations to the Class of 1979 on completing the requirements for graduation. There are several major milestones in every person’s lifetime. High School graduation is one of the important ones not only because of the learning it represents, but also because it signals a future role of responsibility as an adult. I heartily commend everyone who has helped to produce this history. Make no mistake about it, this history of your high school days will become increasingly precious to you as the years come and go. Keep it safely in your home library. It is YOUR history! History begins with YOU! Always remember that whatever you become in life depends upon what you do now. Daily, let the history of your life and work for God, others, and yourself show that you are “setting the pace to merit the expenditure in the education of youth.
