ZUV jj f'jj Mrs. Ossie Ware Mitchell, President Birmingham Board of Education I am delighted to have the opportunity to greet you as you reach another milestone in your preparation and development. Commencement marks a beginning, and I would strongly urge each of you to begin very definite preparation by continuing your studies beyond the high school level. In order to live a happy and successful life, you must develop both your mind and your heart. Broad horizons filled with unlimited opportunities await the men and women qualified to serve in solving the problems of mankind. The world needs persons of high character and intellectual brilliance. Prepare today for tomorrow’s opportunities! Congratulations to the Class of 1979 on completing the requirements for graduation. There are several major milestones in every person’s lifetime. High School graduation is one of the important ones not only because of the learning it represents, but also because it signals a future role of responsibility as an adult. That responsibility is not only to one's self but, also, to all of society. Best wishes in the future to all. Wilmer S. Cody, Superintendent Birmingham Public Schools dazo[ W. c fayz± Twice I have been privileged to make a statement in the Pacesetter Yearbook — the 1969 and the 1979 editions. The creation of school annuals involves much work. I heartily commend everyone who has helped to produce this history. Make no mistake about it, this history of your high school days will become increasingly precious to you as the years come and go. Keep it safely in your home library. It is YOUR history! History begins with YOU! Always remember that whatever you become in life depends upon what you do now. Daily, let the history of your life and work for God, others, and yourself show that you are “setting the pace to merit the expenditure in the education of youth. It is the wisest investment any parent, citizen or organization can make. As you continue to strive for excellence, I fatherly bid you Godspeed. C. W. Hayes Former Director of Negro Schools Retired June 1966 8 ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY oznian During four years of high school, you move rapidly toward what you expect to become. You spend much of your time in preparation for what you expect to bring rewards. You know that you must pass courses in English, history, science, mathematics, vocational skills, and the arts in order to graduate. The final reward for your efforts is the diploma. Life, however, is the total school of which high school is a small part. Yet, life does not offer a written reward that can be framed and placed on a wall. Life in all its dimensions offers and demands much more. To share its fullness you must achieve peace with mankind, appreciate the natural wonders of the universe, respond to the needs of others, and enjoy the accomplishments of mankind. The good life requires you to expand the dimensions of your body, your mind, and your spirit so that they blend and balance. •To develop the harmony of body, mind and spirit, I suggest the following: _______ Love those who appear unlovable; _______ Strive for inner peace, then it should follow that you can be at peace with others; _______ Appreciate art and music for they will enlarge the soul; _______ Learn to judge when to speak and when to keep quiet; Read widely but weigh carefully what you read; _______ Develop and follow plans that will keep the body; _______ Accept failure as a temporary result of having tried; _______ Be appreciative of kindnesses shown to you; _______ Recognize and respect the rights, privileges and properties of others; _______ Hear the cries for love and understanding, and respond to them. If you do all these things, you will hear and feel the rhythms of the universe, and furthermore, you will know that you are a part of it. Dr. Martin Luther King left to us a legacy of hope, a dream, that through nonviolent action in the cause of justice and through npnretali-atory action to evil deeds, we can learn to live together peacefully, to share equally in the heritage of our nation, and to reach out and address ourselves to the cause of human dignity for every man. He left to us love for those who appear unlovable, respect for work done well, and pride in ourselves, our country, and our heritage. Annually, we at Hayes rededicate ourselves to the principles of Dr. King, and reaffirm them in the minds of our students for it is through them that the dream becomes and remains a reality. J. B. First of all, we must work to our full potential in everything we attempt. Our success will depend upon what we have learned as students. We must also realize that our moral standards play an important part in our achieving success. SO STRIVE TO DO YOUR BEST IN EVERYTHING. Secondly, we must face the reality that no one is going to hand us success on a silver platter. We must obtain it through discipline, hard work, and many sacrifices. WE MUST MAKE THE SACRIFICES. Thirdly, we must never adopt the erroneous philosophy that we cannot excel because of racial discrimination. There has always been discrimination, but this did not stop Ralph Bunche, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Booker T. Washington, Roberto Clemente, Pele, and many other non-white Americans. WE MUST SUCCEED BECAUSE WE KNOW WE CAN. Finally, we must remember that the future belongs to us. If we fail to adequately prepare for a future safe from wars and grief, then we will not have benefited from the educational advantages in a school such as ours. As president of the student body, I wish for each of you success in whatever you do. czrf-Cnui zA [at£x So stately she stands, a perfect view Yea, her hearts embrace the new _ . jx • ' A Her goals reach upward toward the sky; w . , • '■da:y We're ever proud of dear Hayes High % We will rank among the few!
