Qpmh - 62 Why bother? Why should we celebrate the Bicentennial? Freedom didn't mean much to our people two hundred years ago. Most of them were slaves. America’s Bicentennial is a story of rebels dedicated to the ideal of freedom. In 1776, enough of them were willing to fight and die for what they believed in to make the dream of independence and freedom a reality in 1876 -and in 1976. The same Freedom Trail that ran from Boston Common past the Old South Meeting House and up to the Old North Church also runs through Birmingham, Alabama. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the meaning of its creed: We hold these truths to be self-evident: That all men are created equal.'' Martin Luther King Yes, we can celebrate. We can celebrate the freedom we have today and the greater freedom we'U have in the future.
