Du CcmlW. f-faues EDUCATOR, Pf-tlLOQOPUER, MJ U WnARlAN Dr. Carol William Hayes was born January 28. 1897, In Hopkinsville. Kentucky. He was one of six children bom to Pickney James Hayes and Mary Baynum Hayes. Dr. Hayes received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbia University. He received an honorary Doctor of Laws Citation from Miles College in 1954 and another from Daniel Payne College in 1964. Dr. Hayes has served the public schools of Birmingham with great distinction as a teacher, supervisor and director since September 1922. His services have been especially valuable in the field of administration. His interest in reading and the instructional program has been paramount to the extent that he has been instrumental in establishing a library in almost ever)’ school under his supervision in Birmingham. He has earned the respect and admiration of his fellowman as a distinguished educator, good citizen, and inspiration to the students of our city. After forty-four years of service to the Birmingham Community and the Birmingham Public Schools, Dr. Hayes retired June 30, 1966.

Dr. Cody grew up in Mobile, Alabama, where he attended the Mobile public schools. He was active in drama, musical productions, National Honor Society and student government. He also participated in church youth activities. During school vacations he worked in a clothing store, a bank, a paper company and as a camp counselor. Dr. Cody received his formal education at Harvard University 3nd did addiiional study at the University of Alabama. His professional career Includes such experiences as elementary teacher, principal, instructor of educational psychology, supervisor of inteneachers, director of training for school data processing coordinators, director of teacher education, superintendent, and extensive work with the National Institute of Education.
