The PACESETTER Carol W. Hayes High School Birmingham, Alabama FOREWORD DEDICA TION ADMINISTRATION FACULTY SENIORS JUNIORS SOPHOMORES CLASSES ACTIVITIES ORGANIZA TIONS SPORTS ADVERTISEMENTS Foreword “TIME WAITS FOR NO MAN.” A year has passed since the first edition of THE PACESETTER came off the press. We hope that it served as a mirror, reflecting the year’s activities, bringing you a measure of joy and pleasure. As you look again, into this mirror in the year of 1970, reflections will reveal glimpses of all phases of school life within the walls of Dear Ole Hayes High School - the academic, the cultural, the social and the recreational have all been included - for it is all of these combined that will enable us to meet the challenges of life. The past lies in these pages, today is upon us, the future is still to be recorded. Will you fit into the picture in 1971? NOW, 1970, is the time to begin. 3 Dedication Astronanalyzing your future? Depending on the stars for the answer? The person to whom this book is dedicated would say to us, Give up, my friends, for the answer does not lie in the stars, your future depends upon you.” Certainly, as a young man, he must have realized this. It is evident that he set his sights high and worked diligently toward attaining his goals, for his successes have been many. He is recognized for his administrative and leadership ability, participation in civic and religious activities, service to mankind, as well as efficiency in public accounting and tax counseling. He continues to grow through continued study, realizing that development does not stop with maturity. Those of us who come in contact with him from day to day are aware of his interest and dedication to his job as principal of Hayes High School. As our leader, he constantly reminds us that getting an education is our primary concern. Among his favorite expressions are, “Education is a big business.” and it will be “Plus or minus what we put into it.” In appreciation of your love and dedication to your profession and fellowman, we salute and pay tribute to you, the principal of our school, Mr. John B. Norman. 4 It. Norman 5 Our principal, J. B. Norman, gives us strength for tomorrow ... ... demonstrates a deep concern for education in general ... ... is a friend to all Pacesetters ... 6 I have visited Hayes High School on a number of occasions. 1 have always come away feeling good. I feel good because I see taxpayers’ money being invested wisely in our young people, and I see young people taking advantage of the opportunities offered them. The environment at Hayes is conducive to learning. In the rooms and the library there is a quiet, business-like atmosphere as boys and girls busily pursue truth and knowledge with the assistanceof a competent staff. There seems to be an abundance of teaching materials and equipment. However, the thing that impresses me most at Hayes is the respect the students have for each other, their teachers, their principal, and their school. I know this respect did not just happen; it was developed by fine parents and an excellent staff of teachers under the leadership of an alert and dedicated principal. 1 expect big things from Hayes. DR. FRED PHILLIPS To the entire Hayes High School family - Congratulations to you for the meaningful story told in the second edition of your school yearbook. THE PACESETTER MR. MAJOR A. BROWN A school that has meant so much to so many, again presents its school annual with highlights of the school year. Each phase of school life will hold a special meaning as you continue along the road of life. Your annual records events as a matter of history. Whatever your individual pursuits may be, wherever your path may lead, your experiences at Hayes will remain intact within the halls of Hayes, you are a part of it; it is a pan of you. To each student, faculty member, and employee of Hayes High School, 1 express my appreciation for your wonderful cooperation. MR. N. P. ARDILLO The Principal’s Message Such tributes as your dedication of this yearbook to me evoke my gratitude, my humility, and my rededication to the task of preparing young people for the future. The past upon which the future is predicted may be reviewed through these pages. How valuable this past is, is dependent upon liow you profit from your mistakes, build on your potentialities, and take advantage of your successes. In this era of drastic social, cultural, and technological changes, the demand is for clear thinking, sincere application, and definite results. The profound knowledge and useful skills gained here at Hayes High School should provide impetus that will propel you into meaningful, satisfying, and productive lives. 1 congratulate you, the yearbook staff, for your efficient endeavors in this publication. I share the honor afforded me with my loyal co-workers and friends. 9 10 We'll get it in a minute, J. B. !' II MISS ANNETTE SHORT. Rotating Aide Our Advisors . . MR. The title page is your name. The preface is your introduction to the world. The pages are a daily record of your efforts, trials, pleasures, discouragements, and achievements. Day by day your thoughts and acts are being inscribed in your book of life. Hour by hour the record is being made that must stand for all time. One day the book must be closed. Let it be said of your book that it is a record of noble purpose, generous service, and work well done. Life is activity, planning, dreaming, aspiring, doing, serving, pressing on from one attainment to still greater heights. A great river is not aimless. It has direction and purpose. So also must a good life have a definite aim; all its strength and fullness must be turned in one direction. It is pretty hard for a fellow to make a place for himself in the sun by resting in the shade of his family tree. The only way to succeed in life is to work hard, stay clean, walk with your back to the wall and keep your Bible handy. 99 The price of everything else may go up or down, but the price of success remains steady.
