THE PA CESETTER CAROL W. HAYES HIGH SCHOOL Birmingham, Alabama Foreword Dedication A d m i n istra tio n Faculty Seniors Un derclass ni e n Classes Activities Organizations Sports Advertisements Table of Contents 2 Each of us dreams a dream as we look to the future. Each of us reflects as we look back on the past - its joys, its sorrows, its successes, its failures, the good days, the bad days, school days, hours of work and play. Yes, memories are made of this. And. as you turn the pages of this edition of the PACESETTER, we hope that memories will bring you a measure of joy and pleasure and that you will look with a sense of pride in being a part of it all. Foreword 3 “THINK - WORK - SERVE” READ, READ. READ. AND THEN READ SOME MORE.” These words come from the lips of one who throughout his career has exemplified the qualities of a leader in educational, civic and religious activities. His experiences in these areas have been wide and varied for he has served in many capacities on the local, state and national levels. He is a professional man. wiihout a doubt, holding life membership in numerous organizations. He has served his community well, gi ing of his time in performing many civic tasks. His religious life is reflected in the life he lives from day to day in his association with others. Although retired, this lover and server of humanity continues to show deep concern for the development and growth of boys and girls in all walks of life. It is with a deep sense of gratitude that the Hayes High School family joins in dedicating this, our first edition of the PACESETTER, to the person for whom our beloved school is named. Dr. Carol William Hayes. Dedication 4 Dr. Carol W. Hayes Educator, Philosopher, Humanitarian 5 Naturally. 1 have a very fatherly concern for the school which bears my name. I expressed this concern in a Hayes High School commencement address to the class of Way. 1968. It contains much of what I would like to say here, but space will not permit. 1 hope, however, that every student who enters this school can hear the tape sometimes. Suffice it to say, the creation of this annual has involved much work. I heartily commend everyone who has had anything to do with making it possible. In the future this publication will enable you to reflect on your high school days. Remember, what you will be several years hence, you are now becoming. Think it over. The people of Birmingham have invested money in your education. Daily, let your life and work show that you are setting the pace to prove that the expenditure in the education of youth is the wisest and best investment any city can make. As youwotk in this direction; fatherly. I bid you Godspeed. Former Director of Negro Schools Retired June. 1968 6 Administration 7 A building - teachers - students - and we have a school. But it takes more than just a building. A good, well-equipped, functional building is needed. Then you must have qualified. dedicated, interested teachers. These two ingredients without sincere, willing cooperative students cannot make a school. All three are essential to a good school. We have these three at Hayes High School. My thanks and appreciation go to the students, the faculty, the administration and allstaff members for those attributes displayed in this school that make for more than just a school, a good school. Congratulations on your yearbook and best wishes for success in your school life and in your pursuits after school. Raymond L Christian Superintendent of Schools 8 DR. W. C. MATHERSON Assistant Superintendent Congratulations on the creation of this annual - the “Pacesetter - which highlights every facet of your school activities. Your school, C. W. Hayes High School, bears the name of one who was indeed a “pacesetter in education. 1 challenge you to make Hayes High School a “pacesetter by aspiring to reach your full potential in all subjects as well as your extracurricular activities. After having achieved your desired educational goals, I challenge you to become “pacesetters in the true sense of the word by offering full participation to your community which is waiting for trained citizens and outstanding leadership. Sincerely yours. W. C. Matherson Assistant Superintendent It is a distinct honor and pleasure to have the opportunity to extend sincere felicitations to all the constituents of Carol W. Hayes High School upon the publication of its first yearbook. In less than a decade, those charged with the responsibility of “setting the pace have done well in the continuing effort to attain new goals. This yearbook is more than a pictorial description of the many facets of life on the campus at Hayes High School. In a larger sense, it mirrors the high ideals of work and service advocated by one whose name the school bears. Many times he has reiterated the statement one picture is worth a thousand words. And so. this is an outstanding tribute to the complete dedication of Dr. Carol W. Hayes, who, although retired from active service, continues to be a moving force as we remember his teachings and his total involvement in the education of young people of this area. It is my hope that the history recorded within these pages will serve as a meaningful incentive to a really great future of academic and extracurricular pursuits. J. S. Goodson Assistant Director of Schools J. S. GOODSON Assistant Director of Schools 9 Our Dedicated Principal . . . 10 Your achievement is a delight to me. You are to be commended for faithfulness and dedication to the task of making this publication possible. If your destiny is to be of value, as trained young people, you must keep the attitude of scholars eager to learn, to read, to write, to listen and to think. I feel that you believe in the adage. Strive, for at the gates of labor lies success. It is my hope that you will adopt the motto - Getting an education is my most important business. Kennedysaid, A Nation's wealth is measured by the quantity and quality of its educated citizens. Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that need not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. A certain man whom most scholars agree had more influence on the history of the world than any other person said, For this reason do I come into the world. What is your purpose? Remember everyone is given at least one golden opportunity, and, which if seized and made full use of will bring success. That is what Shakespeare meant when he wrote - There is a tide in the affairs of men, which, taken at the flood, leads to fortune. Finally, I wish to express appreciation toourP.T.A. and friends for the part they played in making this publication possible. II To Work With i Never Too Busy Pacesetters 12 13 MRS.
