ADMISSIONS In Admissions, the primary responsibility is to provide the university with outstanding students and to provide the students with an accurate presentation of the university and its many diverse colleges. Each year, the department selects more than one thousand freshmen, an arduous task made difficult by the heavy competition. Because of the school's heightened reputation nationally, this task is now even more difficult than in the past. 21

Carnegie-Mellon University Office of the President 5000 Forbes Avenue Pittsburgh. Pennsylvania 15213 [412] 578-2200 October 9, 1984 Dear students: I want to congratulate you on completing your academic work at Carnegie-MelIon. You have graduated from a demanding program, and you can feel pleased with your achievement. We are proud to have had you here and want to thank you for your many contributions toward improving Carnegie-MelIon. Over the past twelve years, the university has expanded its educational and research activities and has made tremendous strides in establishing itself as one of the top universities in the nation. We began a number of programs, such as a 1iberal-professional educational program, based on a rigorous core curriculum, in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. We also formed a number of new departments, including Biological Sciences, Engineering and Public Policy, Statistics, and Social Sciences. These developments have increased the reputation of Carnegie-MelIon, both nationally and internationally. Research has grown from $10 million in 1972 to $53 million at the end of the fiscal year 1984. An exciting area for research is the Robotics Institute, which we expect to expand rapidly over the next ten years. Our venture with IBM for personal computing on our campus promises to be one of the most exciting developments in education in this century. Since its founding in 1900, the university has made tremendous strides in education and has been forward looking, but still has not forgot its past. As we have progressed, we have built up such traditions as the Senior Fence, the buggy races, and the Green Room in the College of Fine Arts, that have been passed from one generation of students to the other. These traditions and many others are central to student life at Carnegie-MelIon. By them students recognize that this university has a history that it intends to preserve for generations that follow them. Thus Carnegie-Mel Ion University with its traditions has had and will continue to have an important stake in your future. I wish you success and good luck in your endeavors. Sincerely, Cyert 20
