It is with great pride that I present the 1985 Thistle to you. It has been the best of times and the worst of times for me. I hope to have produced a book with accuracy, simplicity, and coherence. The final judgment of the book is yours, and I hope it is a positive one. When Mike Mintz, my predecessor as editor-in-chief, asked me to succeed him, I accepted eagerly, unaware of the complexities involved with production of this book. I learned slowly, but surely, with the help of a great many people. The advice of Dean Lois Cox and Mrs. Mary jo Rudman was invaluable, as was that of our publisher representative, Mr. John Lopushansky, in coordinating our production with Intercollegiate Press. Great thanks are due to production and business staffs. Adam Stoller coordinated the production with Mike Swatko, Janet Patterson, Alyce Simon, and Rosemary Hinteregger. The section editors, Libby Barna, Andrea Benowitz, Barbara Evosevich, Michelle Kee, and Amy Lipke, managed their sections with skill and care. Sheila DeNero managed the business affairs with expertise and dedication. Tammy Sliwinski produced the artwork for the book. I must thank my family and friends for their personal support during this last year. My parents, Mr. and Mrs. Allen Wood, my brothers and sisters-in-law, Gary, Jody, Jeff, and Claudia Wood, all supported me during the process. My friends, Sean Cudmore, Glenn Joyce, Brad Kaufman, Steve Salata, and Jay Shaughnessy, were equally supportive. I gave a great deal of thought to whom I should dedicate the book. I originally intended to dedicate the book to a distinguished alumnus; however, the accomplishments of the current administration in the last thirteen years deserve particular notice. The president has made it possible for the university to flourish at a time when many other universities are declining. In the last five years, particularly, its reputation has grown enormously. In giving credit where credit is due, I dedicate this book to Dr. Richard M. Cyert. Sincerely, James McKean Wood, editor-in-chief UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES CARNEGIE-MELLQN UNIVERSITY PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA 15213 17
