PENNSYLVANIA 1521T '• V 3 4 5 SPRING CARNIVAL “SOME LIKE IT ROUGH” Ushering in the spring of 1983 once again was Carnival, a tradition thriving since early Tech. “Some like it rough” blazed the sky, and the competition for Sweep-stakes was rough indeed. Weather also turned out for the occasion, as students dipped into drawers for shorts and t-shirts. With finals week looming on the horizon, students enjoyed one last chance to put academic hassles aside and party. A handful of musical groups provided the festival atmosphere to complement the midway's color and excitement. The rained-upon awards ceremony produced Spirit as the booth winner. Sweepstakes, the most watched event of the weekend, ended in a suprise coup for Pika’s second entry Bullit, which broke the record by 1.5 seconds at 2:09:0. The previous record also fell, to the second place winner. Beta’s Vixen. 8 10 11 13 15 p1 The campus community has also changed. On the positive side, there is an increased awareness of campus politics and events. On the other side is the higher emphasis on research, with a lesser emphasis on education. While there are academic committees to further teaching, their force is small as compared to those of research. If they could somehow he allowed access to the benefits of research . . . Yet it is the student who suffers, and it is he who has the power to alter this trend. Throughout my four years at CMU, I have seen many changes. The Thistle staff itself has changed from a minute staff which didn’t even do its own photography to a well-structured organization that has a staff of more than thirty members and one of the best color darkrooms on campus. I would like to thank all the people who helped in the preparation of the 1984 Thistle. Dean Cox and Mrs. Rudman, you are a model for all administration and faculty; Steve, I couldn’t have done it without you; Sheila, your dedication has put us where we are today; Jim, good luck next year; Joan and Keith, you’ve helped me through it all; Mom and Dad, it’s finally over . . . and just beginning. Guys, if you need me, I’ll be in Boston. Michael F. Mintz Editor in Chief 1984 Thistle 17 One of the primary responsibilities of CMU to provide a quality education. Through rigorous and sometimes strenuous academic programs this goal is accomplished. Carnegie-Mellon University office of the President 5000 Forbes Avenue Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15213 (412) 578-2200 October 25, 1983 Dear students: I want to congratulate you on completing your academic work at Carnegie-Mel Ion. You have graduated from a demanding program, and you can feel pleased with your achievement. We are proud to have had you here and want to thank you for your many contributions toward improving Carnegie-Mel Ion. Over the past ten years, the university has expanded its educational and research activities and has made tremendous strides in establishing itself as one of the top universities in the nation. We began a number of programs, such as a 1iberal-professional educational program, based on a rigorous core curriculum, in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. We also formed a number of new departments, including Biological Sciences, Engineering and Public Policy, Statistics, and Social Sciences. These developments have increased the reputation of Carnegie-MelIon, both nationally and internationally. Research has grown from $10 million in 1972 to $43 million at the end of the fiscal year 1983. A new and exciting area for research is the Robotics Institute, which we expect to expand rapidly over the next ten years. Our new venture with IBM for personal computing on our campus promises to be one of the most exciting developments in education in this century. The period that we are living through will be viewed as more crucial for our future than any time since the 1930's. Our decisions and actions in the next ten years will establish the society we will have and will affect our impact on making life on earth better and safer for everyone. As educated persons, you will be a part of the planning process for the future. I urge you to exert your leadership for our country in whatever fields you enter. Your decisions must be based on the criterion of what is best for the country and not what is best for each of us. Carnegie-MelIon University has had and will continue to have an important stake in your future. I wish you success and good luck in your endeavors. Sincerely, 20 Richard M. Cyert STUDENT AFFAIRS 22 23 FOOD SERVICE For that special place — below the heart and above the belt — Food Service provides a variety of atmospheres in which to indulge: More wood Cafeteria with its “new look”. Kiltie Cafe with its long lines. Salads Plus with the greens for your green, the Tartan Grill with its view of the tennis courts, and More Pizza with its late-nite entertainment. Take your pick. LUAU PHYSICAL PLANT LIBRARIES The University libraries, consisting of Hunt, Engineering Science, and Mellon Institute libraries, provide an important academic resource on campus. As well as an impressive collection of books, journals, microforms, and slides, and a helpful staff, the Libraries also offer special services such as late night study hours and typewriter rental to the campus community. Presently in the process of implementing an online catalog and automated circulation system, the Libraries continue to grow into a more expansive and vital informational resource for both faculty and students. STUDENT ACTIVITIES Students Activities, headed by Anne Witchener, supports existing student organizations and encourages the development of new organizations, based on student interest. From WRCT-FM to the Forbes Street Gallery to the Activities Board and even the Thistle, Anne and her staff behind the Skibo Information Desk make it possible for students to channel their interests and energies into rewarding extracurricular activities. It’s the building you pass on the way to the library at night, or going to yet another class in Doherty or Baker. Maybe you’ve seen a Drama Department production there, or a concert, or have wandered along the hall near the Art Department studios, looking at the drawings and paintings hanging there. Chances are, though, if you aren’t a student in CFA, all CFA means to you is the building across the tennis courts from Skibo. The College of Fine Arts is more than that building over there” or a meeting place for students with unique tastes in clothing. CFA is a philosophy, a way of life. It is a brotherhood of more than 3(X) students; their hopes, their dreams, their futures. Itisacom-munity of artists, from the professors down to the freshmen. Maybe the best way to get a feeling for the spirit of CFA is to listen to some of its students. Steve D., sophomore. Art. The upstairs studios in CFA are the most inspiring places to work. The ceiling in the main hallway is awesome now that they’ve restored it.” Pam B., graduate student. Drama. “I think the Fine Arts cut is one of the happening places on campus. You’ve got your frisbee, Held hockey . . . even silly sculptures from time to time.” CARNEGIE INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY To people not closely acquainted with CIT, the engineer appears to be a sterile, money-grabbing technician who lacks all other personality — not so. Actually, engineers are among some of the most creative and innovative people in the world. The engineer is given a problem to solve and the tools to solve it, and from there invents a solution — something new and different, that works and has a purpose. What CIT does is teach the student what the tools are and how to use them. Just as an artist must learn to utilize the brush and canvas to master the techniques of painting, so the enigneer must learn to use science and mathematics to solve problems. Both need to possess the creativity to de- velop and implement new ideas. CIT students learn calculus, physics, and computing until even their dreams are haunted by it. Their ways of thinking begin to change, and they begin to perceive and analyze physical problems in the world around them that they never even noticed before. The problem solving method becomes second nature. CIT teaches the engineer to look for the best solution; not any one, but the most efficient or economical. The engineer that graduates from CIT is an innovative engineer, an inventor, adept and prolific at producing new solutions and concepts in his or her field. 43 44 (c) t;wvmuHrtu rMn nr mo u j r uTj mi r tm c,‘ uio « ;_____ 1 ; U17 Cl f U f me jrMciO, 1-1 i r - i i,Li . . i i i i -Ii i i i - i i MOTOROLA microsystems fliaek MELLON COLLEGE OF SCIENCE The mention of MCS seems to conjure images of white-coated chemists playing with test tubes, or gray-bearded mathematicians smoking pipes while they manipulate complex equations in this last bastion of “pure science on the CMU campus. Not true. MCS is a .unique mixture of the old and new, combining traditional pure sciences such as chemistry, physics, math, and biological sciences with more recently developing subject areas in computer science. As well as being a teaching center, the Mellon College of Science is also a vital research center. Professors and re- searchers in MCS bring up-to-date information and developments in their respective fields to CMU and to their students. As MCS professors open their labs, and their work, to the students, students are able to participate in the vital work going on right now in their fields of interest, instead of keeping noses in textbooks and waiting to graduate before being able to apply their studies in a meaningful way. Mixing the old and the new, and making it alive and vital for both faculty and students is very much what MCS is all about. 47 COLLEGE OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES What is H SS? Ask anyone not in the college (and even some that are in the college) and you might get a shrug, a sort of “Uh, I don’t know”. It’s a little tough to form a cohesive perception of the entire college as a single group, because its activities are so diverse. Writers, social scientists, history, psychology, philosophy, and literature majors are all part of H SS. There is a unifying principle underlying all of this diversity, though, exemplified in the college s common core curriculum for the freshman and sophomore years. The philosophy of liberal arts education in H SS is to provide strong analytical skills to accompany the more traditional humanities background. The freshman and sophomore core courses emphasize problem-solving skills, relating the concept of the problem to writing, history, and social science. By the time the end of sophomore year rolls around, students in II SS possess a solid analytical base and have explored courses in various subject areas through their electives, and are able to apply these skills to course work in a single area of interst. H SS has taken the much maligned concept of humantities education and turned it right around into a marketable, and vital, resource in today’s highly technological and analytical society. Although CMU is most widely recognized for its academic strengths, we also boast leading teams including football, tennis, and cross country, in the i President's Athletic Conference. FOOTBALL The Tartan football squad brought the Presidents' Athletic Conference title to Carnegie-Mellon University for the fifth time in the past seven years, and an NCAA playoff berth for the third time in six years. The 1983 Tartans finished the season unbeaten and untied with a 9-0 overall record and a 7-0 conference slate. This is the second time in the history of CMU that the tartans finished the year with an unblemished record. These communities give to Pittsburgh a culture that can be found no-i where else. THE “BURGH” The actual city Pittsburgh may be considered small by size comparisons to other cities, but it has a character in its people and buildings that is unparalleled. Pittsburgh is a hometown. The people who live and work here are proud of their city, its teams, and its growth. Pittsburgh offers music of all kinds, amateur and professional theater, museums, shopping, art, and much, much, more. Renaissance II has brought many new and beautiful office buildings to the downtown area. At the heart of it all are Pittsburgh’s people. The very cornerstone of ATO calls for us to go beyond existing barriers by providing all our members an experience rich in personal development. In short here lies the ultimate of all fraternity challenges — building a program which helps each member realize his full potential as an ATO, as a student, and ultimately as a human being. This bond develops during the year with the plcdgeship and continues to grow ever stronger after initiation. This strength is shown in our I. M. teams and in Greek Sing. It is especially evident during buggy and Carnival as the entire house pulls together. This bond is developed as an active Phi Kap and grows stronger with age. 1BU0 LIGHT PI kappa alpha Rnlx'it Andreiko Ira Androphv Howard Berrnson. Jim Bichl. Mark Brado. Erie Briner. Roller! Brooks. It was down in old Virginny where Pika began,” and since then many fine men have been initiated under the standards of friendship, honor, truth, and Pride. Here at our Beta Sigma chapter we attempt to exemplify these standards in all of our endeavours, both group and individual. There exists a special bond between every brother and pledge, one that casts far beyond their four college years. Pride. . . Pride plays an essential role in all of our activities; whether rushing to achieve respect in football, striving for academic achievement, or rolling to a buggy championship. For the honor of all Pikes everywhere, we will forever strive to keep Pi Kappa Alpha number one at CMU as well as in the hearts of all our brothers. PI LAMBDA PHI Bruce Barrett. John Barrett. Sigma Alpha Epsilon continues to enjoy it’s tradition of social and academic success. Last year we placed third in Greek Sing and participated in booth and look to improve this spring. This year we held window-washing fund raisers on Moorewood Ave. and donated the money to the Unemployed Steel Workers. Also this year we rushed a strong, productive group of pledges who have helped make our house stronger in every area. Our diverse brotherhood has been continually involved in bettering the CMU community in almost all areas. 191 SIGMA NU Peter Dave Bechtel. Tom Byrne. Scott Coggins. Scott Crump. Mike Difiglia.
