SPRING CARNIVAL Spring Carnival. An event everybody at Carnegie-Mellon knows about, but at the same time it is one very few people know anything about. The Spring Carnival Committee is made up of a dozen or so people all chairing individual committees, ranging from Midway, to Fireworks, to Ceremonies. These people, working with an annual budget of about $16,000, begins working in October on Carnival. The theme is chosen sometime in the late fall. SCC, working with the Midway committee, made up of 30 or so booth chairmen arrive at the theme. Spring Carnival, as every one knows, is at the mercy of the weather. This was clearly illustrated during Spring Carnival 1981, which is pictured here. It is most unfortunate that this carnival may be chiefly remembered for the cold and rain, rather than what it was, an excellent Carnival that was hampered by poor weather. For those who don't know. Spring Carnival began in the year 1920, when a group of engineers held a soap box derby. Along with this, a Carnival was held, ostensibly to revive sagging student spirit. As we all know, that soap box derby has become sweepstakes, and the Carnival has grown tremendously. In 1921, Gamma Delta Iota completed the buggy course, which has remained virtually unchanged in 62 years, in a time of 4:38. In 1981, the Carnegie Involvement Assoc. (CIA) completed the course in 2:10.5. Today, Spring Carnival is made up of about 30 booths, more than half of which are sponsored by independent, non-greek organizations, a dozen rides, fireworks, entertainment, events and Sweepstakes, all of which combine to make Spring Carnival not only one of the biggest activities not only on the CMU campus, but also in the city of Pittsburg. 29 33 Spring Carnival Concerts santanK 34 George Gee and the Make Believe Ballroom Orchestra 35 40 41 42 DEAN WALTER In September, Student Affairs welcomed the addition of Dr. Braden Walter as the new Assistant Dean of Students. Dean Walter was already familiar with the university, having completed his undergraduate degree here in 1970. His doctorate is from the University of Pittsburgh. One of his prime duties is to act as a student advocate. Students with problems of any kind, ranging from personal to academic, or students just confused about where to go to find an answer have found Dean Walter to be a tremendous help. He has plans to introduce new programs that will enhance the extra-curricular opportunities and make CMU an exciting place to be. Almost any Thursday you will find him and Dean Cox having lunch in the Tartan Grill with a group of students and a faculty member. Discussions at these lunches are of a no-holds-barred type. He hopes that such informal meetings can be expanded. So, to Dean Walter we say — It's great to have you here! 43 Student Affairs Dean Swank and Dean Cox direct Carne-gie-Mellon's student affairs from the administrative perspective. Dean Swank is an active participant in the operations of the student senate, and Dean Cox is the advisor for student organizations. Their supportive and co-ordinative efforts are responsible for bringing much opportunity to the students of this university. Dean Earle Swank 44 Dean Lois Cox Student Activities Anne Witchner Anne Witchner and the student activities staff orchestrate events from their student activities center behind the Skibo information desk. Organizations and clubs provide numerous opportunities for students to actively participate in their extracurricular interests. There are many positions of responsibility and channels for constructive energies. A student finds his or her pursuit as rewarding as it is enjoyable. Gloria Arbutina Admissions and Alumni 46 Security ■ The admissions department provides communications between the prospective student and the university which are as welcoming and encouraging as they are informative. The alumni relations department fills the campus with activity each fall during Home-coming weekend to honor our deserving graduates. Security is our campus police force which assists in times of need, for medical transportation in an emergency and escort service during the evenings and nights, as well as being an assuring presence at all times. 47 49 50 Physical Plant mm m C. While course curriculums emphasize the building of skills in analytic and comprehensive problem solving, we learn that the ability to communicate is just as important. We get the same basic courses during freshman year, and it is also during this time that we get our first experience with the DEC-20 computer and its reservation system. Doing homeworks and taking tests becomes a way of life. During sophomore -year-,-we start to go our own separate ways, taking more courses in our major. We learn that nine unit courses always turn out to be worth more than nine units of work, the joy (?) of writing up labs; even though we pull all-nighters, it is rewarding to be able to explain what we have done so that others can understand it. But there is something missing — what are all the practical applications of the knowledge we are gaining? When can we do something useful with what we know? The dreaded Junior year gives us that chance. ASEII in each engineering discipline encourages innovative methods of real-world problem solving, with the aid of computer simulations and lab calibration and testing. At this stage, we hardly see our fellow engineers from freshman year. They are going through the same thing in their own engineering disciplines. Sometimes the all-nighters, the computer crashing, the homeworks, and the labs get to be overwhelming, but we manage to make it through somehow. The rewards of all our work are worth it: we attend a school with a very good reputation, we work with professors who arc leaders in their fields, and we are part of a very professional environment, which really does prepare us for the real world. The Department of Architecture graduated students as early as 1908. By 1914, an institution of higher learning dealing with all fundalmental art forms was already in existence. Thus, a school of total art, administered and guided by a single philosophy, emerged for the first time in the Western World, offering under one roof architecture, art, design, drama and music. A significant pioneering effort created by the college was the establishment of the first Drama Department in the United States to educate and train professionals in the arts of the theatre within the context of an institution of higher education. The first bachelor's degree in Drama was awarded in 1917. The College is a community of artists, training future communities of artists. John Wooldridge Design '83 83 86 87 88 Humanities and Social Sciences a In 1968, after the demise of the Margaret Morrison Carnegie College, the University inaugurated the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. The formulation of a curriculum followed standards set by the traditional Carnegie Plan — to provide a practical technically oriented education. Humanities were integrated with the technical educational programs on the undergraduate level; this adherance to the Carnegie Plan establishes a common emphasis on problem solving in both the technical and humanities areas. By 1978, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences had introduced the Core Curriculum. This consists of ten interelated courses taken by all freshmen and sophomores in the College. These common core courses draw from the areas of English, philosophy, cognitive psychology, sociolo gy, history, political science, economics, statistics and computer science. In addition to these courses, the curriculum includes distributional course clusters in two areas: Language, Culture and the Arts, and Science and Technology. The concept of problem solving is a major aspect of the integration of the core courses. Tradition plays a relatively small role in the overall scheme and rationale behind the College. First, the College itself is comparatively new to the University, so there are not many traditions unique to H SS. Secondly, the overriding philosophy of H SS stresses a non-traditional approach to liberal arts. Curriculums are designed to teach practical, applicable skills that will be valuable to a BA or BS graduate. The ability to identify and solve complex problems is the hallmark of a well-educated professional in any field 1 academic, government or industrial. For this reason, the teaching of transferable problem-solving skills is an appropriate unifying theme in the Humanities and Social Sciences Curriculum. This professional emphasis results in a marketable liberal arts degree as opposed to a mere preparation for graduate work. The College of H SS exemplifies the University's motto, The Professional Choice. Brian Lawrence Noel Wolf '84 Z: f« 89 e, R.'NEftiE ■■duT. MMin Founded thirty years ago, the Graduate School of Industrial Administration maintains one of the top master's programs in the country. Within the schools are divisions of business, economics, administration and management science. Dean Robert S. Kaplan credits the school's faculty for its excellence in teaching and in offering innovative courses, courses which change to reflect the fast-paced needs of business. Two objectives of GSIA are clear: developing short-range skills of immediate value in marketing, accounting, finance, strategic planning, operations management and human resources. Creating a long-range framework flexible enough to serve those who aspire to any type of managerial setting and providing substantial general and quantatative skills to do the job well. Annually, GSIA graduates are sought by business, and in 1981-1982 saw stepped up recruiting and multiple job offers for GSIA's MSIA's. The school's notable program for Executives serves senior level corporate managers, introducing them to the newest theories in management and strategy. In turn, the faculty have an opportunity to meet with a variety of business people, thus heightening the school's visibility in the corporate world. Although there is a current shortage of Ph.D's for teaching at the graduate management level, GSIA continues to train a high percentage of faculty qualified for positions at leading business schools. 1 J 95 SUPA A ■ • J SUPA, the School of Urban and Public Affairs, initially started out ten years ago as an experiment to re-do the way people were educated public management and policy. Since then the program has become one of the top two or three in the country. SUPA is one of a whole new wave o' schools which take a more analytic and quantitative approach to public management than does the old method of instruction. This year, besides granting over fifty masters and about six doctoral degrees, the school took an in-depth look at its curriculum. One result of this study was the decision to create a new area of specialization in Management Information Systems (MIS). According to Brian Berry, the new SUPA dean, MIS is the most rapidly growing area of public policy. He expects the concentration in MIS to be ready by next fall. The masters program, which normally takes two years, has an explicitly prescribed curriculum which includes courses in economics, computing, accounting, communicating, operations research, bureaucracy, organizations, and public process. Students do four semesters worth of project research on real policy problems, such as what to do with radioactive waste or how to deal with hazardous waste such as chemical dumping. A special feature of SUPA is the 3-2 program which enables undergraduates to obtain their masters degree in only five years instead of six. After their junior year, they are not only senior undergraduates, but first year graduate students. This program has become increasingly popular through the social science department in the college of Humanities and Social Sciences. Government agencies are traditional places for SUPA students to find employment after graduation. Recent cuts in the federal budget, however, could cause many students to look hard and to accept work in the private sector. mum 98 99 101 WMM 104 Basketball 105 1981 Tartan Football PAC Division III Champions 107 4 m t- a 109 Cheerleaders Sheri Wolfgang, Lisa Lettiere, Sharon Blosel, Sandi Ruscin, Charise O Conner, Susan Balk, Gail Williams, Randi Bograd, Gerri Geffl, Rose Moore, Celeste Lejune VOLLEYBALL Yvonne Chi, Helen Clark, Jennifer Donaldson, Sue Ann Illig, Patricia Prim, Bonny Stuart, Janet Szwark, Gennie Moreau, coach: Jane Fisk, asst: Mike Matthews SOCCER Rovert Borne, Jim Brigham, Robrto Canepa, Tim Carlin, Caleb Clrkery, Joseph Crute, Corral Dauion, Joel Dreskin, Marclay Ehienne, Richard Eten, Stephen Fine, David John Freda, Carl Freedman, Neal Frink, Yuri Gawdiak, Phil Girard, James Gillespie, David Jacobs, Bob Konugh, Randy Lipschen, Mike Lynch, Mike Pastino, Todd Perri, John Pistolessi, Owen Ranta, Scott Ritter, Hal Schenck, Neil Allan Shapiro, Stephen Slack Daniel Smith, Richard Williams, John Willis, Michael Wuenstel, David Yarnall, coach: Nick Gaudioso 114 WOMEN'S TENNIS Laurie Arendas, Beth Dougherty, Carol Goldberg, Brenda Goldstein, Paulene Kramer, Bridget Kyne, Lorena Miller, Trina Nagasawa, Elizabeth Reed, coach: Mark Bush 115 116 117 118 119 120 Dave Allegretto, Nick Anderson, Lee Andre, Craig Babbony, Scott Bachik, David Bechtel, Rich Betti, Scott Brasco, Jim Brown, Marc Calello, A1 Commisa, Patrick Campbell, Harley Carroll, Jim Chrise, Jerry Clarice, Bill Clouse, Tom Collins, Bill Corpus, Richard Creech, Randv Datanal, Fran Diegelman, Ricfi DiLucente, Mark Dixon, Brian Dooley, Gary Draku-lic, Philip Estep, Dave Feigel, Matthew Feldman, Lee Ferketic, Dan Foster, Andy Fuhrman, William Garrison, Mike Garverick, Joe Glinka, Wesley Goodin, Jim Gresh, Tim Griffith, Bill Gross, John Herold, Rich Hinston, Micheal Holodnik, Joseph Honse, Jim Hooper, Bill Humphrey, Brad Huwar, Ross Jicomelli, Lloyd Johnson, David Kantor, Scott Kasunick, Bill Kiselick, Scott Lee, Mark Leposky, Michael Lichte, Mike Little, Wayne Lucas, David Lynch, Eugene Marcink, Bob Mathias, Vince McElhin-nv, Tom McGowan, Joe Mollica, Jim Morrison, Todd Mowry, Ken Murawski, A1 Mylan, Dennis Myers, Joe Nardone, Stewart Nickolas, Mike O'Donnell, Lou Olive, Christopher O'Mara, Paul Pasicznyk, Dan Pav-lick, Dennv Postufka, Roger Roble, Jim Rodgers, Larry Ropelewski, Andy Rossi, Mark Rubai, Brett Runion, Mite Sandlin, Gerard Sansosti, Paul Scarmazzi, Jim Scarpone, Joe Schinosi, Kahlil Shareef, Eugene Smith, Jeff Steck, Jim Steinke, John Sterling, Ted Thomas, Michael Tierno, Joe Vasalani, Joe Wagner, John Walters, John Wise, John Wright, Brian Zagorac, Mike Zellhart, David Zito 121 |i|I!IIIUiIi8IIe.S muimt.iiHEi WSMUriFKHE Bpaunnima 122 £21 9 25 126 127 129 1981 Edition 'Bash Sorority Rush Beta's as They Performed Damn Yankees I I I I I!! ! !M l . 1,11 ,iI1|!,!ll! ijiii .: 8 !i!i!!!!!i!!!!!l!!i!!!!: CHI OMEGA Kathy Farley (President), Louisa Gravel, Linda Hetrick, Cara Koenig, Sandy Krieg, Lisa Mummery, Elinor Orita, Joann Yokel (vice President), Bonnie Beck, Lauren Calaby, Vicki Cooper, Carole Johnson, Erin Johnston, Susan Miller, Anna Plugge, Karen Stromberg, Leslie Weinberg, Elisa Bucan, Gina Fleitman, Dara Kraitchman, Ruth Oroshnik, Deanna Silverman, Debbie Weisman, Pledges: Kathy Connery, Lisa Fausti, Linda Flaherty, Leslie Jothersall, Amy Johnston, Reena Khaana, Daphne Pulsifer, Rachel Sekuler, Toni Zuliani. Sigma Nu is in the midst of a banner year. We started off with a very successful fall rush, which brought us a total of 20 new pledges, and the prospect of doing as well in the spring. Buggy is looking better than ever this year with many potential pushers amongst our pledges, along with the fastest fraternity buggy on campus. This is in addition to the veteran pushers of last year, returning to prove they can still do it. Sigma Nu is more than ever involved in campus activities, such as A Phi O and the United Fraternal Organization. I've been hearing negative comments about Pittsburgh, and since freshman year. I've been defending my hometown against the barrage of insults. I'm a native to Pittsburgh, and like most Pittsburghers, whether native or transplanted, I have a deep pride for the city that I call home. This section of the book has been set aside to show you some of Pittsburgh. Naturally, it's only a small sampling of what this city has to offer. But maybe it will inspire you to leave the campus for a little while and see some of it for yourself. Or if you never venture beyond the borders of C-MU, maybe this will give you some idea of what you've missed. I call Pittsburgh my hometown, and that's exactly what it is. From its humble beginning as Fort Pitt in the West, this city has had a certain small-town atmosphere. That same small-town feeling is still present today and joins with the big business, big city, and downtown atmospheres to make Pittsburgh the FRIENDLY CITY. Pittsburgh has many nicknames: the Steel City, the City of Champions, the Heart of America. The Smokey City is an old slur leftover from the early industrial days. Since then literally billions of dollars have been spent each year on pollution control. The city grows healthier each year. Today, Pittsburgh is called the Renaissance City. Like other major metropolitan centers, Pittsburgh has its cultural aspects. Just five minutes away is the Carnegie Museum and Scaife Gallery. In the center of the city stands Heinz Hall for the Performing Arts, home to the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and the Civic Light Opera — not to mention various guest artists. The city is likewise the home of various other small art galleries, theatres, and dance groups. Pittsburgh's GREATEST selling point, though, is its people. They give the city its real personality. Successful politicians, businessmen, students, artists, performers, and iron and steel workers together make it the Friendly City. Now that you've heard the view from a Pittsburgher, take a moment to look around and see what we have to offer. While you're a guest in the city, take advantage of the benefits of our town. Christine M. Kretz Editor 214 Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is the second largest city, by population, in the state and one of the leading manufacturing cities in the nation. About 25 percent of the steel produced in the United States is made in Pittsburgh. The city is not only an industrial area, but a cultural one as well, laying claim to its own ballet company, opera company, symphony orchestra. Civic Light Opera, museums, libraries and art galleries. The city limits also contain 2000 acres of public parks to preserve the scenic beauty of the area. Historically, Pittsburgh is one of the oldest settlements in the nation since French and British traders began to frequent the area in 1730. In 1754 Fort Duquesne was built at the origin of the Ohio River and lasted until 1758. The day after the fort was destroyed, the place was named Pittsburgh in honor of British Prime Minister of Britain, William Pitt. A new fort was constructed in 1759 on the site of the old one and it was called Fort Pitt. A settlement was begun in 1764 and made a borough in 1794 after the American Revolution and was chartered a city in 1816. Today, Pittsburgh covers an area of 55.1 square mile within the city limits and is surrounded on all sides by its suburbs, claiming a population of over 605,000 people. 216 ■■■ WtKm fifXX?£Vp, 217 i l« AKESPEARE READS OUTSIDE CARNEGIE-MUSEUM HEINZ HALL: a cultural center of the city Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre Pittsburgh's resident ballet company, under the artistic direction of Patrick Frantz, is now in its 12th season. The company, touted by Dancemagazine as ... one of the nation's leading ballet troupes, is comprised of 36 dancers and yearly performs both in Pittsburgh and on tour. The 33 local performances include the popular holiday show NUTCRACKER, and are followed by 40 on-tour shows in 24 states and abroad. Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera CLO, responsible for professional musicals in the Pittsburgh area since 1946, spent its first 14 years performing outside Pitt's stadium. Then, in 1960, they moved to the civic arena; their wandering was not over, however. Due to the acoustic shortcomings in the arena, they moved into their present home in Heinz Hall, where they have performed 6 musicals each summer since 1971 and have attracted the notice of many famous performers, including the 1981 chairman. Gene Kelly. Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra The Symphony, which performs at Heinz Hall, was founded in 1877 and has done concerts under the direction of such conductors as Victor Herbert, William Steinberg and, since 1976, Andre Previn. Among the Symphony's achievements are a 222 nationally aired television series Previn and Pittsburgh, and a recent tour of 13 European cities. photo: courtesy Pgh. Symphony Orch.
