Athletic Department James E. Banner. Director. Intercollegiate Athletics Earl J. Birdy. Director. Intramural Athletics Sports have been on the rise at CMU. Many of the Varsity teams have come out of obscurity to places of prominence in the President’s Athletic Conference and Division III. The football team was the PAC Champion this year and last year the basketball team went to the Division III playoffs. Much of the recent success of the Varsity teams is due to the excellent recruiting and leadership of Jim Banner, the Athletic Director. Intramural athletics play an important part in CMU life. Earl J. Birdy’s intramural program not only includes conventional sports such as football and softball, but unexpected ones such as chess, backgammon and badminton. The diversity of the program affords all kinds of people the opportunity to get involved. CMU's intramural program has been cited as one of the best in the nation.

 AMS The Department of Administration and Management Science underwent a major change in focus this year as a result of the appointment of Robert Kaplan as dean of GSIA in November. Kaplan’s viewpoint is that undergraduate business students are not getting a broad education and need to study more science and humanities. One of his first actions in office was to cease to require Elements of Industrial Administration, a course condemned as worthless by some students.
