22 On September 1st, 1977, Dr. Daniel Berg was named Dean of the Mellon Institute of Science, replacing Acting Dean Edward Schatz. Dean Berg's goals for MIS are to emphasize the cultural importance of the sciences, to bring the departments under his jurisdiction closer together, and to integrate MIS more with all of the colleges, rather than just with CIT. Berg also intends to solve immediate managerial problems such as finding a department head for Biology and reversing the recent decline in enrollment, which he says has bottomed out. He is optimistic about job and career opportunities that develop from an education in science. In September. 21 CIT alumni made news around the world this year. In October of 1977, Vasily Vasilyevich Kuznetsov, a Metallurgy student from 1931 to 1933, became First Vice President of the Soviet Union. Later, in February of 1978, Judith Resnik, a 1970 Electrical Engineering Graduate, was chosen by NASA, to be one of the first six women astronauts. M. Granger Morgan. Head.
