Carnegie Institute of Technology began the year with high hopes of establishing CMU as a major solar energy research center. An interdisciplinary group made up of faculty and students from the departments of Mechanical, Civil, and Electrical Engineering and Architecture, headed by Professor Arthur T. Murphy delved into the problem of solar emergy. Ground was broken next to Doherty House for the proposed Solar Energy Lab. 21 CIT alumni made news around the world this year. In October of 1977, Vasily Vasilyevich Kuznetsov, a Metallurgy student from 1931 to 1933, became First Vice President of the Soviet Union. Later, in February of 1978, Judith Resnik, a 1970 Electrical Engineering Graduate, was chosen by NASA, to be one of the first six women astronauts. M. Granger Morgan. Head.
