18 The President of the University Graduation is a joyous occasion for a number of reasons, but perhaps the most important one is that it symbolizes the achievement of a set of goals, explicit or implicit. Few students are capable of completing their education at a school like Carnegie-Mellon University without exhibiting a great deal of effort. Thus, graduation is an achievement of which you can be proud. Unfortunately, it is only one step in many that are necessary before you can truly view yourself as having made the fullest possible use of your intellectual resources and training. However, the same self-discipline and drive that were necessary for your education will serve you well in your professional life. It has been a pleasure for me to have you at Carnegie-Mellon and I wish you the best of luck as you pursue your careers. I hope that you will make a contribution in some form so that our society is improved and that your life will be rewarding to you and to others. Dr. Richard M. Cyert

Carnegie Institute of Technology began the year with high hopes of establishing CMU as a major solar energy research center. An interdisciplinary group made up of faculty and students from the departments of Mechanical, Civil, and Electrical Engineering and Architecture, headed by Professor Arthur T. Murphy delved into the problem of solar emergy. Ground was broken next to Doherty House for the proposed Solar Energy Lab. Plans for construction are still progressing, although there is no visual evidence at the site, because of a revision in cost estimates. Angel G. Jordan. Head, Electrical Engineering
