THISTLE 19 CARNEGIE-MELLON UNI PITTSBURGH, PENNSY 178 VERSITY LVANIA 3 Introduction........2 Administration and Faculty......16 Sports.............30 Greeks.............58 Activities.........72 Seniors...........112 Epilogue.........150 WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE WOMEN AT CMU? Same as anywhere else except the pretty ones hide. In general, they’re a lot friendlier than most women at other schools I've visited. The women need to worry less about social values and frat boys.” Sexy calculators. Like any other group of people, they are varied. They're camouflage experts. Buy them leashes and feed them Puppy Chow. Despite popular opinion, CMU has its share of attractive women. There aren’t enough.” WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE MEN AT CMU? There aren’t too many — just boys with calculator toys.” The ones who smile are nice. The ones who aren't nerds are only after your body. The Greeks are great.” Some of them like computers better than people.” “Rather ambitious, in both good and bad ways.” There are too many of them.” The greenery, the trees, and the computers.” The Cut in the springtime. You can skateboard down Baker Hall. “Mudbattles on Frat Square till the administration says NO. It is very close to the center of Pittsburgh, but it's secluded by Schenley Park.” WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT WHEN YOU WALK ACROSS CAMPUS ON A SUNNY DAY? Depends on my mood — sometimes classes, but usually about good times spent.” Something’s wrong, it should be raining! Air pollution, football, sex. Sunset over Doherty Hall, picnics. What it would be like to have pretty girls here. Flying kites, not going to classes, sitting outside and drawing.” I can’t remember the last sunny day. HOW IMPORTANT ARE SPORTS AT CMU? “Judging by attendance figures, I'd say about as important as student government.’’ “About as important as a Protestant in a Catholic graveyard. “Important to girls who like good bodies on football players. “Not too important since Jimmy the Greek doesn’t put out point spreads for CMU.” Not as important as at other schools; there seems to be a lot of apathy here.” IF YOU SAW PICTURES OF THE FOOTBALL TEAM WHAT CAPTIONS WOULD YOU EXPECT TO SEE? “CMU. The team that did better than Pitt.” Not on athletic scholarship. “Gasior scores another touchdown.” Gasior fumbles another one.” AMS student or frat people. Now if we filled the ball with Freon 12 and made the cover of polyvinylchloride ...” This group also says White Cloud is softer.” And it's a Bobby Kennedy quarterback sneak once again.” The CMU Forensic Club.” ATO. Greek letters. Stopped short again.” These men have brains and brawn. Who needs brains?” Ninth runner up in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl.” WHY DO YOU ENJOY WATCHING SOCCER OR BASKETBALL GAMES? For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction (watch it work).” Because I enjoy watching mindless competition. The players are not as idolized as football players.” You can see their legs. To see people killing each other on a field of competitive sport instead of the cut.” They are fast-paced and have more action than most sports.’ To see our opponents get beat.’ You can scream a lot.” 11 WHAT DO YOU DO TO RELAX? Watch concrete testing in the Civ. E. lab. Lift weights.” Go out with friends, talk deeply with someone. I jump out frat windows.” Watch the milk turn sour in Skibo.” Get high, expand the mind, make love. Run after PAT buses and inhale the exhaust fumes.” I go for a ride or read junky books that have nothing to do with classes.” HOW DO YOU EXPRESS YOUR CREATIVITY HERE AT SCHOOL? Walk to class by different paths, trying to think of new ways to say HI.” I write nasty things in wet concrete.” By destroying something in a creative manner.” Doodle on my notes.” In ASE.” I play my flute or harmonica or sing in the shower.” I play the spoons to Mozart. WHAT IS AN ARTIST? An artist is one who communicates his emotions to others using his body, his hands, his voice, his words.” Someone incapable of being an engineer. That's like asking what is life.” A person who gets most of his supplies from the art store instead of the bookstore. Somebody with paint on his pants. Someone who puts his spirit, himself, into his work. An artist is a fine arts person, an engineer, a scientist, a writer. A creator.” WHAT DO STUDENTS DO BESIDES STUDY? Revise Einstein’s Theory of Relativity. Listen to WRCT.” Fool around, or in other words, mind their own affairs. Go to Allie’s. Improve the Mona Lisa. 15 You mean there's something else?” WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE STEEL SCULPTURE? Attack of the metallic caterpillar. I see something different every time. It makes a handy landmark.” A train wreck? The integral of a constant.” It represents the use and control of space.” Perhaps it’s R2D2’s mother. i® Administration and Faculty 18 The President of the University Graduation is a joyous occasion for a number of reasons, but perhaps the most important one is that it symbolizes the achievement of a set of goals, explicit or implicit. Few students are capable of completing their education at a school like Carnegie-Mellon University without exhibiting a great deal of effort. Thus, graduation is an achievement of which you can be proud. Unfortunately, it is only one step in many that are necessary before you can truly view yourself as having made the fullest possible use of your intellectual resources and training. However, the same self-discipline and drive that were necessary for your education will serve you well in your professional life. It has been a pleasure for me to have you at Carnegie-Mellon and I wish you the best of luck as you pursue your careers. I hope that you will make a contribution in some form so that our society is improved and that your life will be rewarding to you and to others. Dr. Richard M. Cyert 19 As deans of Student Affairs, Deans Swank and Cox are kept very busy. Dean Swank serves as the advisor of Student Senate, United Fraternal Organization and heads the University Disciplinary Committee, to name a few of his responsibilities. Dean Cox is on the Student Senate Finance Committee and is advisor to PanHellenic and the THISTLE. Earle Swank. Dean, Student Affairs Lois E. Cox. Assistant Dean, Student Affairs Carnegie Institute of Technology began the year with high hopes of establishing CMU as a major solar energy research center. An interdisciplinary group made up of faculty and students from the departments of Mechanical, Civil, and Electrical Engineering and Architecture, headed by Professor Arthur T. Murphy delved into the problem of solar emergy. Ground was broken next to Doherty House for the proposed Solar Energy Lab. Plans for construction are still progressing, although there is no visual evidence at the site, because of a revision in cost estimates. Angel G. Jordan. Head, Electrical Engineering 21 CIT alumni made news around the world this year. In October of 1977, Vasily Vasilyevich Kuznetsov, a Metallurgy student from 1931 to 1933, became First Vice President of the Soviet Union. Later, in February of 1978, Judith Resnik, a 1970 Electrical Engineering Graduate, was chosen by NASA, to be one of the first six women astronauts. M. Granger Morgan. Head. Engineering and Public Policy Arthur Murphy. Head. Mechanical Engineering 22 On September 1st, 1977, Dr. Daniel Berg was named Dean of the Mellon Institute of Science, replacing Acting Dean Edward Schatz. Dean Berg's goals for MIS are to emphasize the cultural importance of the sciences, to bring the departments under his jurisdiction closer together, and to integrate MIS more with all of the colleges, rather than just with CIT. Berg also intends to solve immediate managerial problems such as finding a department head for Biology and reversing the recent decline in enrollment, which he says has bottomed out. He is optimistic about job and career opportunities that develop from an education in science. In September. Dean Robert Kail was promoted from Assistant Dean of CIT MIS. in charge of freshmen to Associate Dean of CIT MIS. IkV Simeon A. Friedberg, Head. Physics (opposite) 23 Daniel Berg. Dean. MIS Joseph B. Kadane. Head. Statistics Robert L. Kay. Head. Chemistry Akram Midani. Dean. CFA Robert E. Page. Head. Music (opposite) Robert S. Taylor. Acting Head. Architecture Orville M. Winsand. Head. Art Fine Arts has been making headlines on two major issues this year. First, there is the continuing search for a permanent head of the Architecture department. Robert Taylor has been acting head since Delbert Highlands resigned the position in June of 1976. Three candidates have been offered the position and have turned it down. Dean Midani says the search will continue, but it is expected to take quite a while to find a new head. The dropping of music education from the curriculum of the Music Department caused much controversy. Robert Page, the head of the Music Department announced the department needed more specialization and a choice had to be made between the performance option and the education option. The announcement was met with severe criticism from the students and a painted fence. The Design Department has made plans for a Senior Show this year. Last year the show was cancelled due to lack of organization. The College of Humanities and Social Sciences developed a new Core Curriculum which was tested by all of the H SS freshmen this year. The Core, consisting of sixteen courses in five clusters, was designed with the objective of providing students with a common base of skills, concepts, and knowledge upon which advanced studies can be built. However, the program has not been well received by the students, as many have expressed disappointment and frustration with the restrictions the Core imposes. Lester Lave. Head. Economics John P. Crecine, Dean. H SS 27 The H SS Academic Advisory Center, established last year, expanded this year under William Cohn, of the History Department. The AAC shows students the options available to them, including self-defined majors and professional sub-fields such as prelaw. The AAC seeks to produce liberal-professional graduates with an edge over other liberal arts grads in the job market. Ludwig F. Schaefer. Head. History and Philosophy AMS The Department of Administration and Management Science underwent a major change in focus this year as a result of the appointment of Robert Kaplan as dean of GSIA in November. Kaplan’s viewpoint is that undergraduate business students are not getting a broad education and need to study more science and humanities. One of his first actions in office was to cease to require Elements of Industrial Administration, a course condemned as worthless by some students. Despite problems, AMS is a high quality department and the demand for its courses has set records this year. Thomas M. Kerr. Head. AMS Student Activities Ann Witchner. Director. Campus Activity Center Operations Maryann Patross. Secretary. Campus Mary Jo Rudman. Skibo Building Manager Activity Center Operations Athletic Department James E. Banner. Director. Intercollegiate Athletics Earl J. Birdy. Director. Intramural Athletics Sports have been on the rise at CMU. Many of the Varsity teams have come out of obscurity to places of prominence in the President’s Athletic Conference and Division III. The football team was the PAC Champion this year and last year the basketball team went to the Division III playoffs. Much of the recent success of the Varsity teams is due to the excellent recruiting and leadership of Jim Banner, the Athletic Director. Intramural athletics play an important part in CMU life. Earl J. Birdy’s intramural program not only includes conventional sports such as football and softball, but unexpected ones such as chess, backgammon and badminton. The diversity of the program affords all kinds of people the opportunity to get involved. CMU's intramural program has been cited as one of the best in the nation. vv-ci Sports 32 FOOTBALL 1977 Tartans PAC Champs The Tartans, PAC champions with a 7-0 league record and a 8-1 overall record, just missed playing in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl. And of course, the hours spent digging cars out of snowdrifts. When it rained, we were for once able to see the brighter side; at least it wasn't snowing. Some people used cross country skis to get to class while others fought their way along the icy sidewalks on foot. At times, there was even too much snow for skiing. But spring finally arrived with only a bumper crop of potholes to remind us of the long winter. Senior Banquet January 28, 1978 (horn the Mu nmiAj60C i(it Dii 77 Approximately 500 seniors attended SARC's Senior Banquet in January. The evening began with a Wine and Cheese Party in the Ballroom, progressed to dinner by Ludwig in Kiltie Cafe, and ended in the Ballroom with the guests dancing to the music of Full Deck. Door prizes were awarded, ranging from a trip for two to Monte Carlo to meals at Nino's, the Red Bull Inn, Roy Rogers and McDonald's to various campus gift certificates. 82 Spring Carnival is a week-end filled with activity. The theme for Carnival '78 was Mythology and Legends, and the Midway was christened Verities and Balderdash. CMU's student newspaper, has chronicled life at CMU since its first issue appeared on October 24. 1906 — for 50. Though the logo, design, content, and price has changed markedly over the years, the TARTAN'S purpose has not: to report the news as accurately and completely as it can. This year. TARTAN reporters typed their way through the Rhodesian situation, Housing complaints, the elimination of Music Education, the Morewood Gardens boiler explosion, Thomas Kerr’s resignation as Dean of AMS, Housing complaints, SDC and Senate meetings, and Housing complaints. The Entertainment section panned, praised, and criticized: while the Sports section covered wins and losses of IM teams and our basketball and football teams. And Folio introduced Hal Aqua and Teri Hope to us all. Note: The THISTLE staff would like to thank the TARTAN for all of their help and late night encouragement. 101 Concerts September 17, 1977 Activities Board sponsored a free concert featuring Asleep At The Wheel and Christopher's Rye on the Fine Arts lawn. The arches of Fine Arts and the beautiful fall day provided the perfect setting for the Saturday afternoon concert. 102 November 11, 1977 James Cotton (below) and the John Mayall Band (opposite, left bottom) headlined together on a Friday night in Skibo Ballroom. Despite technical difficulties, both James Cotton and John Mayall showed their musical prowess. December 2, 1977 College days reminiscing was very evident during Robert Klein’s show. He kept the audience laughing the entire evening with improvisations and audience interactions. He was just the professional entertainer CMU needed on a winter eve. The Class of 78 graduated on a rainy, cold Monday Morning. The excercises were held in the gymnasium where a standing room only crowd gathered to view the proceedings. The faculty looked impressive in their robes with brightly colored hoods and sashes that distinguished them from the graduates. The festivities were made complete by performances by the Jazz Ensemble and a Bag Pipe Band. 105 vr.r- 111 When looking back on life at CMU, one remembers Spring Carnival, Greek Sing, movies, plays, Allie's, and the Craig Street Inn. Then on deeper reflection, we ruefully remember the studying. All-nighters in the drafting rooms, late-night physics, those ASE bridges, and bending over a drawing board. How many 8:30's did you sleep through? All the stiff necks, red eyes, and cases of writer's cramp .. . what was it all for? So you could be here for Carnival, Sing, movies ...
