The Senior Class officers and their sponsor, Mr. Louis Speziale, have guided our Senior Class in a very rewarding final year at C.H.S. By sponsoring the suc- cessful magazine campaign, our seniors were able to earn S1600 to use for publication of our colorful Voyager. Before the class had caught their breath, another cam- paign was launched-graduation namecards and invi- tations. Is it that time already? Soon, after-prom ideas were being suggested, while all the seniors were ex- citedly, and perhaps a bit nostalgically, planning their final whirl at C.H.S. Finally, before any senior realized, our class was passing for the last time through the halls of our Alma Mater. Graduation had arrived, and our three years of learning and laughing became pleasant memories. Let's never forget C.H.S., Seniors,-for it gave us three years of wonderful memories. v MARY ARMSTRONG Commercial Mar Y F.B.L.A., 10, 125 E.T.A., 11, Tri-Hi-Y, 10, Choir 11, 12, G Clef, 10g Junior Play Committee, 11. y GLORIA JEAN ASTON C 0 mme:-cial jean nie F.B.L.A., 12, F.H.A., 10, G.A.A., 10, National Thes- pian Society, 12, Pep Club, 10, 11, See Staff, 11, Tri-Hi-Y, 10, 11, 12, Choir, 11, 123 G Clef, 103 Intramural Sports, 10, 11, 12, Letter, 11, Champion- ship Basketball Team, 113 Cheerleader, 10, 11, 12, Captain, 12, Junior Play Cast, Chorus, 11, Senior Play Cast, Extra, 12, Prom Committee, 113 Senior Revue, 12. Directed by Mr. Melvin Burkett, the 15 members of this class are exposed to work beyond that of the normal high school level in these two sciences and also complete a certain amount of independent research in the field of their choice. This work will help to lessen the gap between high school and college sciences and definitely will be of great benefit to the students. Much credit is due to Mr. Burkett, who unselfishly gave up his free Saturdays to attend classes at Carnegie Tech so that he might present the most useful material to the class. Hats o-ff to Mr. Burkett and these future scientists! The members of the class include: A. Barthen, B. Cantwell, T. Cunningham, P. Gamrod, T. Holmes, B. Keil, M. Leschak, R. Loertscher, D. Moss, R. Mykita, D. Payne, A. Pysh, H. Sherman, P. Spivak, J. Weists. The Advanced Placement English class, under the supervision of Miss Lois Mason, is limited to the top 20 students of the senior class who have demonstrated a desire to learn and mature ability to handle large assignments, for the course includes 20 text books and 120 outside reading books. With a concen- tration on literature and composition, individual conferences are held to help each student develop his specific weak- nesses. Students are expected to work at the freshman college level in their discussions and compositions. Then in May, they participate in the National Advanced Placement Examination which, if they receive the required grade, may permit them to skip their freshman course in college. The members of the class include: A. Barthen, A. Brisse, B. Cantwell, P. Gamrod, J. Garrett, J. Gordon, J. Gulick, R. A. Hof, T. Holmes, M. Hoysan, B. Keil, P. Matwiczyk, L. McLaughlin, D. Moss, D. President Russ Bunio is well recognized for his outstanding leadership qualities. Serving as a member of Student Council, Russ also takes an active interest in the affairs of the entire school. Not to be forgotten, though, are his athletic talents, which he displays capably on the basketball floor. Having earned a letter in his sophomore year, Russ is already a recognized member of the Varsity C. Pete Dignan, the class' choice for vice-president, possesses a cheerful sense of humor, which has made him a favorite among his classmates. Like Russ, Pete also has earned membership in the Varsity C because of his basketball talents. Penny Perlman, secretary, is admired for her neatness and easy smile. One of her distinguishing characteristics is her desire to combine work with fun whenever possible. As a member of Student Council, Penny actively participates in all school activities. Her eagerness to do a good job has con- tributed to her success as classtsecretary. A vivacious CHS cheerleader fills the spot of junior Class Treasurer. She is Stephanie Popiv- chak, better known as Patsy. Well known to all for her friendliness, Patsy is an honor student and also serves on Student Council. Patsy's willingness to assume responsibility and to help others has made her a natural for the important position of treasurer. SIIATED left to right: S. Popivchak, Treasurerg P. During the following three weeks, doorbells in and around the vicinity of Carnegie rang as high school students tirelessly sold various magazines to their neighbors, friends and relations. All the hard work was gloriously rewarded, though, for on October 15 the money was counted and the final total read 134,000 with a 31,600 profit. RUDY LOERTSCHER-Carnegie High School's Foreign Exchange Student from Switzerland. It's terrible how fast the time flies by. It seems to me that I just arrived and already I'll soon have to say goodby to you. There is so much I'd like to say, for everybody has been so wonderful and helpful to me, but all I can say now is thanks a lot and I'll never forget you. I'll always remember my year here in CHS as the very best of my life-fighting for a seat in the cafeteria, sitting on the bench at basketball games, turning pages at the Christmas assembly, being the first Santa Claus at CHS who had a German accent, well, too many things to mention. But as well, my stay here has given me a better understanding of the American way of life, a second home and a second country. If you ever come to Switzerland, ask for me between Bern and Zurich and Illl be glad to help you as well as you always helped me. Once more, thanks alot to everybody and goodbyf' CAN FIELD QEEMCJE AUDREY PYSH-Carnegie High Schools Foreign Exchange Student to Germany. It is hard to express the sentiment of an unfor- gettable summer into a few short sentences, for being an exchange student of the American Field Service program was an experience I know I shall never forget. I made my home in Hanover, Germany, with the Hesse family, which included Pappy, who was a Lutheran minister, Mutti, a wonderful housewife and cook, and two great sisters, Renate, 21, and Christiane, 15, We travelled throughout much of the country and I was even fortunate enough to visit the divided city of Berlin for four days, spending one of them in the Communist eastern zone. From this I learned much about the world situation and the posi- tions of various countries in world affairs. But the most important part of my summer was spent learning about my second country and its people and coming to love them as my own. My summer certainly taught me the real value of the meaning behind these words, the AFS motto: VUalk together, talk together, all ye peoples of the earth. Then, and only then, shall ye have peace. 73 I Chela Murgueytio MARY ANN HOYSAN Last summer, it was my good fortune to be chosen as a representative of my school and International Fellowship in Cali, Colombia. While there, I lived with the Maya family, and for ZVZ months, I led the life of a Colombian teenager from learning the lan- guage and customs down to eating rice twice every day. I feel that I gained knowledge that could not be surpassed by reading any book or watching any movie. Moreover, the ac- quaintances that I made, will occupy a special place in my heart for the rest of my life. DONNA DANKS I was very fortunate to be chosen as a foreign exchange ONAL FELLOWSHIP An important part of the International Fellow- ship is the exchange which brings South American students to our school and community. This year, CHS received three students who spent from two to three months with American families: Chela Murgueytio, who lived with the Miller family, Leonides Herran Qliikoj Lopez, who stayed with the jaracz'sg and Dolly Palaez, who became the fourth member of the Hoysan family. Most CHS students will not soon forget their South American friends and hope that Chela, Kiko, and Dolly will also remember them. student to Chile. I was thrilled at the thought of becoming a member of a Chilean family. My 'mama' and 'papa,' Senor and Senora Rafael Fusiter Lo- pez, and my brother and sis- ters, Pacho, Mirentchou, Ros- ita, Monica, and Mary, treated me as though I were one of the family. I learned many of the customs and ways of life of the Chileans, both domestic and political. The thing that im- pressed me most about Chile was the warm-heartedness and kindness of the Chileans them- selves. I will always be grateful to those who made my wonder- ful trip possible. Aires, Argentina, this past summer. During my stay in Buenos Aires, my foster family was Senor y Senora de la Riva and their two sons. The experience was rewarding in every aspect. As a member of the family I shared their full social life and soon realized that teenagers are pretty much the same wherever you are. Politically speaking, I was for- tunate to be in Argentina dur- ing one of their few presiden- tial elections. It was quite interesting as well as frighten- ing at times. Educationally speaking, I found the school Dolly Palaez and Kiko Lopez system to be quite different. I consider my experience to be of great value and am grate- ful to those who made it possible. PAUL SPIVAK I represented Carnegie High School as a good will ambassador to Ecuador under the I.F.S. Program. I made my home with the Vozquez family in the small town of Cuenca. Through my family and many friends, I acquired a true understanding of our South American neighbors. From my experiences, I learned that our southern neighbors judge us by our personality traits and our consistent desire to become better friends. E 74 Left to right: M. Hoysan, D. Danks, D. Nixon, P. Membership is limited to foreign students who are attending Car- negie High, all returnees, or American stu- dents who spent the past summer in a for- eign country, and candidates for either the American Field Service or International Fel- lowship Exchange Programs. One of the club's biggest annual affairs is a money- making project to raise funds for bringing exchange students to CHS. In addition the club sponsors field trips to points of interest around Pittsburgh and tries to organize ac- tivities Which Will acquaint the foreign stu- dents with the American way of life. But- there are a lot of sharp CHS students who do meet, and for a very good purpose. This club is organized to pre- pare its members for the Student United Nations of Western Pennsylvania which is held annually in Pitts- burgh. All club members hold various positions in this Student U.N., some representing delegates and ambas- sadors of foreign lands in the General Assembly, others acting as judges of the World Court, and still some serving in various organ committees. The club members meet regularly to learn their duties for their various positions and also to discuss foreign affairs and current U.N. actions. Due to the absence of Miss Boyle in the first part of this year, Miss Lois Mason kindly consented to supervise the girls and, when Miss Boyle returned, Miss Mason remained as assistant sponsor. This year the girls had a rewarding experience by visiting St. Paul's Orphanage and plan- ning a Christmas party for the children there. This past fall several CHS students, along with approximately 250 other students from various area schools, participated in the annual Allegheny County Chorus. The group re- hearsed many long hours, practising three times a week for four weeks at Frick Elementary School in Oakland. Finally, the cho- rus was prepared and pre- sented its program of mu- sical selections from Broad- way shows, sacred songs, and Negro spirituals to the annual assembly for Teach- ers, Institute. Being a member of this choir was a great honor for all stu- dents who participated. DIQHZJCI' CHORUS From the participants of several County Choruses, a group of students was selected to make up the annual District Chorus, which was held at Bethel Area High School. For four days, from january 17 to 20, the singers lived in area homes and spent many hours rehearsing, as well as enjoying social events. Concerts were performed Friday and Saturday evenings, the 18th and 19th, and on Sunday all students returned home. Everyone who participated agreed that it was a wonderful and rewarding experience. II7 QECHON RUNNERS-UP john Zaracki lon topj David Apinda Michael Zak ION On March 14, 1964, Dave Spinda captured the PIAA State Wrestling Championship at Pennsylvania State Uni- versity. He is only the second to achieve this great feat in the history of CHS. Dave was on his way to the State Crown when he be- came the WPIAL Section 1 Champion in the 138 pound class on February 29. He had to compete in four matches to gain this title. Mike Zuk, 103, and john Zaracki, 154, were able to wage their ways to the Section finals, but both were de- feated. Dave's victory took him to the WPIAL Regional Tournament the following week at the Pitt Field House where he defeated two more opponents. Finally, Dave gained his last two victories at Penn State where boys from all four corners of Pennsylvania competed, After defeating his last opponent, he remained undefeated with a record of 22 wins and no losses, and was crowned Pennsylvania's 138 pound champion. '20 Dave Van Deveer and Vic Polk. Roy Raco QRockyj The Late President of the U. S. JOHN FITZGERALD KENNEDY IN MEMOIZIN4 November 22, 1965, marked another day that will long live in the minds and hearts of Carnegie High School students as well as people everywhere over the surface of the earth. At 2:45 p.m. that afternoon, the words rang loud and clear over the Public Address system, President John F. Kennedy, wounded earlier in the afternoon by a sniper's bullet, is dead. A hushed silence fell upon all the classrooms as some wept, others stared numbly into space, and still others unbelievingly exclaimed, But it just can't be true. But soon the hearts of one and all were heavy with sorrow and the realization that the life of this personality, this diplomat, this man, had been tragically snuffed out by the hand of an assassin. The 5:10 dismissal bell rang and the usually happy, talkative boys and girls solemnly made their way to their lockers for books and coats then quietly left the building. The Senior Class Play, which had been scheduled for that Friday and Saturday evenings, was postponed, as students, with deep respect, spent the long weekend in their homes with their own families. Yes, he's gone and we'll nevermore see his friendly, reassuring smile or hear his kind words of wisdom, but the memory will live on, the memory of a president, of a husband, of a father, our beloved I.F.K. , VOYAGEIZ SEPTEMBER 1-New School year begins. fYou,re in the Army now!j A welcome went out to Rudy Loertscher, Mr. Bouyoucas, Mrs. Pruner, Miss Rainaldi, Miss Thomas, Mrs. Vorko, and a welcome back to Mr. Marcenelle. 7- Yea, Carnegie! PAUL PERHOSKY-Principal PIZJNCIWXLC OFFICE In the life of every teacher there comes a day when he suddenly finds himself in the position of the pupil and realizes to his amazement that his pupil has become his teacher. Take the case of an average junior high student. His contact with accelerated courses and all the modern tech- nology that science has to offer, has enhanced his education ten fold over previous generations., For this reason, many teachers find it imperative to continue their education at some local college or university in order to stay abreast of their students. f As many teachers have discovered, education is a two way street. The students receive enrichment, teachers re- ceive enlightenment. MRS.
