Hickes Superintendent Of Schools For the last nine years Dr. Hiclces has served as the superintendent of the Carnegie Public Schools. Before he came to Carnegie, he was the principal of Glassport High School, his alma mater. Since he has been at Carnegie, he has added many new subiects to the curriculum. He has a difficult job, but he is constantly improving our school system. He is admired by 'both the Faculty ancl the students. Mr. Kenneth L. Logan Principal Before becoming principal of Carnegie High School, Mr. Logan was principal of Harding Junior High School. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree at Clarion State Teachers College and his Master of Education degree at the University of Pittsburgh. This is Mr. Logan's second year as principal of Carnegie High Schoolp but in these two years, he has won the respect and admiration ofall the students. B0aI Cl of Ed LlCafi0l1 The 'Board of Education is composed of a group of men who have at heart the interests of all students of the high school and the grade schools, as well as those of the taxpayers . lt is their duty to see that any school problem brought before them receives the best possible solution and that this solution is carried out. Any difficulty receives individual attention and care- ful consideration in an attempt to correct it. The Carnegie SchoolfBoard is composed of seven members who are elected by the people of the town for a term of five years. They meet in the conference room of the high school the second Monday of each month. These meetings are always open to the public in order that problems of a student or taxpayer may im- mediately confront the board without unnecessary delays. The school board is also responsible for ex- tending every opportunity to each member of the com- munity, and to offer to adults, as well as students, the use of modern facilities within the school buildings . This is done by having adult classes in the evenings. Many people, because of this opportunity, become happier and, 'therefore, better citizens of our community . The Carnegie Board of Education, with the other duties already listed, has another iob to perform. lt has the responsibility of seeing that all school business and activities function properly, it supervises the maintenance ofschool buildings, financial problems, taxation, and all other school problems. We of the VOYAGER staff are proud of and grate- ful to these men who so unselfishly work to improve the Carnegie school system. LEFT TO RIGHT: Mr. Schnepp, Mr. Jones, Dr. Hickes, Mr. Kahn, Mr. Firth, Mr. Garner, Mr. Walker, Mr. Lesko, Mr. Coll, Athletic Association The success of Carnegie High's athletic program depends largely upon the combined efforts of the mem- bers of the Athletic Association . The Athletic Associa- tion is one ofthe vital parts of our school system since it controls all forms of athletics in which our students participate . The responsibilities of this association are many and require a great deal of time and effort. The most important of these are: scheduling of games, purchasing new equipment, providing transportation for the players, hiring and paying the officials, and, of course, coach- ing and training the teams. The line of responsibility goes from the coaches, who have the closest contact with the players, to the faculty manager, Mr. Speziale, to the principal, Mr. Logan, to the superintendent, Dr. Hickes, and finally to the Board of Education. Mr. Zaney is the head football coach and also the physical education director of the boys. Mrs. Ball is the physical education director and coordinator of the girls' sports. She is also in charge of all in- tramural activities for girls only, and those activities for mixed doubles, such as badminton and table tennis . Mr. Marcenelle, Mr. Stoclcum, and Mr. D'Alessandro are assistant football coaches. Mr. Sobie is head coach of basketball and junior high football. Mr. Marcenelle is his assistant coach for basketball. Mr. Stockum is head coach of the baseball, Mr. Bandyk, tennis, Mr. Zaney, golf, Mr. Andresky, rifle, and Mr. Swenn, wrestling. Senior Play Stardust As the result of hard work, the Senior Class play, Stardust, was presented on November i9 and 20. The play, a comedy, centered about the trials and tribulations of students, professors, and a visiting actress in a modern dramatic school. Loud laughter could be heard when the students, led by their zany professor, showed that they felt their parts. The cast deserves much praise for its fine acting, as do the committees, for their hard work. However, none of it could have been possible without the patience, imagination, and efforts of the director, Mr. Clawson. Although the play was ofa different type from those usually produced at Carnegie, it was deemed a success by all. 52 Senior Play Cast Janet Ross .... Phil Ford .... Marion Phipps . John Redman . . The room is a most pleasant one, decorated with pictures and posters of the problems of democracy classes which meet there . When the eight-thirty bell rings, varied personalities are found in here. Our unanimous choice for class comedian would be John Mullaney. The president of the iunior class, Louis Telerico, is in this room. Mary Lu Speziale sings with the Girls' Ensemble, Dick White, the Double Quartet. Homeroom 206 The room with perhaps the most activity is room 206, Miss Boyle's homeroom. The sound of office machines can almost always be heard, for office practice classes are held here. This is a change for the homeroom stu- dents, for last year they were in Mr, Burkett's room. Because of this year's physics television course, they were transferred. The new environment, though, met with their approval. The officers of organizations in Room 206 are as follows: Marcia Stein - vice president of the Golden Rule Tri-Hi-Y and Betty Plachecki - treasurer of the Golden Rule Tri-Hi-Y. Billy Lewis sings with the Double Quartet. Lynn Hall is one of the high-stepping maiorettes. This room is well represented in Student Council by Betty Plachecki . 'Although Room 208 is one ofthe smaller home- rooms, it has some distinguished persons. Diane Bevard, the only junior cheerleader, is also the secretary ofthe Junior Class . This room is unusual because it is the only room in the high school to have tables with drawers instead of having the usual desks. Also, during the science fair, many color- ful projects of the biology class are on display here. The offices held by the homeroom members in 2l2 are as follows: Alice Bilewicz - president of the Golden Rule Tri-Hi-Y, Richard Roth - president of the Biology Club, Dennis Wilcox - vice president of the Biology Club, Wayne Szafranski - treasurer of the Civil Defense Club, and John DeFonso - vice president of the iunior class. After having the same homeroom For two years, 'she is convinced that it is one of the best. Although the Art Room is one of the smallest junior homerooms, it is well represented in school activities: Dolores Cardamone - vice president of the Debate Team, Janice Masciantonio - secretary ofthe Biology Club, Allegro Chiesa - president ofthe Original Hi-Y. John Green sings with the Double Quartet, Gwen Gibbs, Bob Mason, and Tom Duda play in the band . Student Council has as its representative of this room Joe Benedict, who is also the president of the French and Spanish Club. Homeroom 103 The sophomores ot Room lO3 have for their homeroom teacher Mrs. Mattson. Since both Mrs. Mattson and the sophomores are new to Carnegie High School, it is very appropriate that they be placed together. Room lO3 has quite a few people in school activities. Rose Marie Zupcic is one ot our sweet maiorettes who is always worrying about her routines . Jessica Bunio is the president ofthe Delta Tri-Hi-Y. Diane Warholalc is the secretary ot the Delta Tri-Hi-Y . Ken Boyda is the secretary of the Novus Hi-Y. Jessica Bunio and Tom O'Neil were chairmen for the United Fund Campaign. Homeroom lO3 is engaged in a special activity -- every morning the students begin to talk with the obiective of seeing who can talk the longest. Members of Room T05 are constantly busy taking part in school activities. These are not only sophomore activities, but things which concern all Camegie High School students, not iust selected activities, such as clubs, but activities For which the students are chosen, such as Student Council and the Girls' Ensemble. For some reason, this room seems to be the center of many activities. There are always people in this room who belong in other homerooms, but find things more interesting in Room 204. Bob Aston is one ofthe few sophomores to be on the Varsity Basketball Team. Linda Grove is ex- ceptional in that she constantly receives high honor grades. Nancy Bogdon is the Student Council representative in Room 204. Nancy is a very busy young lady--besides being on Student Council, she is also o cheerleader and treasurer of the Delta Tri-Hi-Y . Student Activities The Student Activities room is one of the smaller sophomore homerooms, under the supervision ot Mr. Clawson. its decorations are changed frequently although the basic theme usually centers around some part ot a speech course, for that is what Mr. Clawson teaches. However, constant companions to the students are the masks on the bulletin board . These were sent to Mr. Clawson from all parts of the world. A large dark-brown one is said to be an actual death mask from Africa. The homeroom students are always in suspense for they never know just how the desks will be ar- ranged inthe room. They don't really mind the changes, they seem to like variety in their day's program. The room has Gloria Buny as a representative to Student Council . Study Hall The Study Hall, contrary to its name, is also a sophomore homeroom under the supervision ot Mrs. Werner. She and the sophomores are new to Carnegie High School this year. The Study Hall is unique because it is the largest classroom in the school and the only one located in the basement. It also has the most students of any homeroom in the school. These students always seem to be enioying themselves, for their large number helps create an informal at- mosphere . Some of the students are very active in the functions of the school. This room is well represented in Student Council by Kathleen Haracy and Gerald McNavish. Kathleen Haracy, Patricia Zawilla, and Jim Riding are onthe VOYAGER Staff. n W 4, 1-.4 X iv if J .,. I, Se BBB Z B- MR. ZANEY - Head Coach To Carnegie High, football is the sport which brings together the entire student body in a burst ot pep and enthusiasm for the Little Tartans. At the games, the spectators, along with the PepClub and cheerleaders, yell and cheer encouragement to the team with the aim of Victory, victory is our cry! in mind. At the beginning ot the season, the future didn't seem too bright, for the entire experienced baclqtield ot last year had graduated, leaving new recruits in their places. However, this pessimistic attitude was soon changed, for, after a little ex- perience, the team scored five wins, tour losses, and one tie. We are proud of the spirit and drive ot the team this year, and feel that they deserve much praise. The team, under the supervision of Mr. Charles Stockum, had much skill and enthusiasm. For the First time this year, the team played on the new baseball field . Cheedeaders A familiar sight at all the basketball and football games was the cheerleaders of Carnegie High School . They devoted their time and energy to practicing and preparing cheers during their summer evenings and while at cheering camp. Their efforts were not in vain, for they showed great skill, along with pep and en- thusiasm, in boosting our boys to victory. These are the cheerleaders of this year: Gerrie Isaacs, the only member to be on the senior squad three years, is the captain. Although one ot the short- est cheerleaders, she makes up in enthusiasm what she lacks in stature. Sandy Armani's sweet smile and pleasant manner do much toward making the cheering section cheer well. Pat Caruso is the very lively one who keeps the action forever moving. Carol Gerrero is full of athletic skill and bubbling personality. Diane Bevard introduces the cheers, for it she wishes, her voice can be heard above all others. Diane is never seen without her cheery smile. Joanne Roman and Nancy Bogdon, the two cute sophomores, do a very good iob ot helping lead the cheering section. 11 1.3 Q! Student Council Student Council, under the capable direction of Mrs . Drew and the efficient leadership of the officers, is one of the most active and respected organizations in the junior high school. lt is a representative group of the entire iunior high who worlc for the betterment of the school through social and service activities. Each homeroom elects two students to represent it at the regular meetings and to share in the responsibility of managing school affairs. This strengthens the bond between students and faculty, which is one of the aims of Student Council. Some of the many Student Council service proiects during the yearincluded acting as host to visiting athletic teams, supplying oranges for both the home and visiting teams, conducting the VOYAGER campaign, and announcing assemblies. Student Council held two skating parties, and sponsored the Get Acquaintedu dance and the last dance ofthe year. The climax of the social activities was the annual Hearts and Flowers dance at which Joe Madva and Sally Marsilio were crowned King and Queen of Hearts.
