The personage who is moved by the desire to know about himself and others and for himself and others. He is the in- dividual and the society, living in the new and the old, experiencing a metamorphosis now that will create the values for the future. Here is the search- ing and seeking, testing and trying, destroying and creating, accepting and rejecting that will form each individual's goal and provide the direction he will take to achieve it. In this school the student has learned to think for himself and to gain the best from others' knowledge. He has in his mind and in his hands the ability and will to create a brilliant future. We have witnessed his strides and believe in his potential, and therefore, to him we dedicate the 1958 Voyager. Page 5 jfg B ax! . J .97 ADIVIINISTRATIUN - Dr. Fleischer Dr. Fleischer and the Class of 1958 ar- rived at the doors of Carnegie High School at the same time. During our three years together, he has guided us throughmany trying times, one of which was the change to the new high school in our sophomore year. Because of his help and guidance, the Class of 1958 already has a record number of college acceptances. For these and many other things We seniors thank him and Wish him the best of luck in the future. Barbara Williams Miss Barbara Williams, better known as Barb, is secretary to Dr. Fleischer. Barb has served in this capacity since her gradu- ation from Carnegie High with the Class of 1950. She takes an active part in the activi- ties of C. H. S. by sponsoring the Golden Rule Tri-Hi-Y. Her smiling face can be seen at all home sports contests as she cheers for the Tart- ans. We lwill all miss her when We gradu- ate. Page 8 Dr. Fleischer l Miss Barbara Williams Dr. Hickes 4 K E twig . Miss Dolores Dombroski Page 9 Dr. Hickes Dr. Roy M. Hickes came to the Carnegie School District from Glassport High seven years ago to assume the responsibilities of being Superintendent of Schools. During his tenure in office he has Won the respect of the entire student body. More than once he has demonstrated his capabilities and Wise judgment in inspiring our class. We are thankful for his friendliness and helpg We wish him many pleasant years at C. H. S. Miss Dombroski Miss. Dee Dombroski is Dr. Hickes' secretary. She has held this position since her graduation from C. H. S. in 1955. De- spite her work, she still finds time to cheer the Tartan sports team on to victory. BO RD OF EDUCATION The Board of Education consists of seven members who are elected by the townspeople for a term of six years. A solicitor is appointed by the board and works with Dr. Hickes, as the administrative head, under the supervision of the school board. These men are faced with problems concerning the whole community as well as basic school business and acti- vities. Their meetings, held on the sec- ond Monday of each month, are al- ways open to the public to help solve the problems of any student or tax- payer. Any difficulty will receive in- dividual attention and careful consid eration in an attempt to correct it Another of the many responsibili- ties of the Carnegie High School Board is to extend every educational opportunity to each member of this community and to offer adults, as well as students, the use of the new and modern facilities within the school building. It was through the untiring efforts of this group of men that the new Car- negie High School became a reality, and it is because of this that years from now, as students walk through the halls of Carnegie High, we sin- cerely hope that they will be as proud of it and our school board as we are today Mr Schnepp Mr Bateman Mr Kahn Mr Firth Mr Garner Dr H1Ck6S Mr Coll, Mr Lesko . Since it controls all forms of athletics, it lS one of the vital parts of the school. The responsibilities of the Athletic Association are many and require a great deal of time and effort. The most important of these are: the scheduling of gamesg purchasing new equipmentg providing transportation for the playersg hiring and paying the officialsg and, of course, coaching and training the teams. Dr. Hickes and Dr. Fleischer serve as advisors and Mr. Speziale is faculty manager. He has the enviable job of collecting all receipts and paying all Page 11 bills. Miss Greschner is physical edu- cation director andcoordinator for all girl sports. Mr. Zaney is boys' physical educa- tion director and head football coach. Mr. Stockum is head baseball and bas- ketball coach and assistant football coach. Mr. Cross, Mr. D'Alessandro, and Mr. Marcenelle are assistant foot- ball coaches. The night of the May Queen Dance is thrilling and one that is long remembered. At a designated time, the floor is clearedg the audience is seated and anxiously awaits the ap- pearance of the queen, who takes her place on the throne and is crowned by the president of the Original Hi-Y. This year the students have voted Norma Davis as queen of the May. Norma, one of our majorettes, has a Wonderful personality and has many friends in C.H.S. First attendant, Barbara Langer, is also one of our majorettes with pretty blond hair and blue eyes that many of us admire. The honor of second attendant belongs to Nancy Cridge. Nancy is our head cheerleader this year, and her loyal support and school spirit are felt throughout the school. Helen Rad was chosen as third attendant. Known better as Frenchie, she has a winning smile and a knack for making friends. Mary Ann Kohut was fourth attendant. Mary Ann also adds her talent to the group of majorettes. She is president of the Drama Club and a member of the Senior Play Cast. Under the direction of Mr. Sawhill and the new assistant coach, Mr. Swenn, they initiated new practice systems. A team of only five experienced men started the season well. A large group of underclass wrestlers gives bright hopes for the team's future. Page 52 Mr. Sawhill, Mr. Swenn WRESTLI G First Row: Smith, Weikel, Taylor, Dunlevy, Lewis, Cridge, Gangone, Burda, G. But as usual those who saw glamour, gayety, bus rides and trophies, learned in reality that if there were such awards, they would be realized only after a long period of training. As a result, we now have a membership of 18 boys and girls who stay because of their love of the sport. We have but two varsity members returning from last years team: Nancy Criclge, who earned a NRA award and Gordon Taylor, a very ardent marks- man and hunter. Our new members are very promising marksmen for this season, and will provide great stabili- ty to the team of 1958-59. BASEBALL This year Carnegie High School will field one of the best baseball teams in quite a long time. With eight return- ing lettermen, coach Charles Stockum feels the boys have a very good chance to better their last year's record of 6 Wins and 3 defeats. Since the Voyager has gone to press before baseball sea- son opens, we cannot accurately re- port their success but we wish them luck and hope they will continue to be a strong contender in section compe- tition. , ' e Page 64 Mr. Stockum Left to Right: Hegeman, Medwig, Jordan, J. The golf matches are all played in the afternoon on the various district courses. The home course is at the Chartiers Country Club. The team plays those teams which are entered in Section VI of the WPIAL. Mr. Bandyk expects a good season with the Juniors that will return next year. ii! 1: clips.-.0 mf' wx ACTIVITIES OY GER Last spring, the 1958 Voyager Staff, under the direction of editor, Tom White, drafted a format for our Work in the fall. The plans in- cluded color division pages, underclass write- ups, and a new printing process. When the fall term arrived, our Work be- gan in earnest. Many were the days when the entire school was bleary-eyed from flash bulbs, and heads were hung low because as- signments were turned in late. But, despite all our labor and headaches, we of the staff found great pleasure in our Ronald Chidlow work. CHOIR The Choir, under the direc- ed to be a very important part dents who are interested in their ability. Each year the Choir has a Christmas performance and a Spring Concert in which the students demonstrate t h e i r talents. The group meets twice a Week and is composed of 107 students Who are members of the Junior and Senior classes. BAND The Carnegie High School Band, under the direction of their new leader Mr. Aldo Di- Ianni, has shown great im- provement this year. Besides adding White gloves and White buckskin shoes to the uniform, the band also executed a num- ber of snappy routines for en- tertainment at half-time for the football games. This, coupled with their playing for pep rallies and their Wonderful Spring Band Concert, has resulted in a quite successful season for the band. We hope they continue to improve and have many successful seasons in the fu- ture.
