The Voyager was tirst published in i925 by the Senior class ot that year. lt has been published annually ever since by the Senior classes. The tirst publication sponsored by any group in the Carnegie schools was the Comedian, published in I896 by the graduating class ot the Second Ward School. The first high school publication was the Censor published by the Senior class ot I9 l5. ln keeping with the historical nature ot the Voyager this year the theme ot our division pages is The Schools ot Car- negie . Sketches ot the original school in this district, the tirst high school building in Carnegie, the tirst building on the pres- ent site, and the present high school building in Carnegie have been included. I-lowever, the tirst sketch is ot an oak tree, the landmark ot the presence ot the tirst white men in this district. This tree, only recently destroyed by storms, marked the corner ot the McFarland, Ross, and Redman patents and was located on the tarm now owned by Jesse Sanford. Tomahawk marks which were tound on the tree are believed to have been made in I769 in a survey made by John Campbell. lt is believed that the tree also marked the western boundary ot Pennsylvania in I769. Surveyors recently went to this oak tree to start lines ot survey. The Voyager statt wish to take this opportunity to ex- press our appreciation to those who have aided in the publica- tion ot this book. Although it is theirs, we wish to thank Wesley Martin and the Senior class tor the tine work which they did in the magazine and ticket sales to raise money tor this book. We wish to thank Dorothy West and the girls who sold candy at the basketball games to augment the Voyager tund. the Monday Club ot Carnegie, the Woman's Club, the Cavalier Club, and the Class ot l935 tor their donations. We also wish to thank the taculty tor their help in compiling the Alumni directory and Rosemary l-lutchison and the Senior Commercial class tor their help in the secretarial work connected with compiling this directory. We are gratetul tor the help ot Mr. John l-laudenshield and others in collecting old pictures and in writing a history ot the school. We hope that this book will bring back tond memories ot school days to the Alumni into whose hands it may tall and that it will serve as a reminder ot triendships, good times, and protitable experiences to the Seniors who will be graduated this year. 1? Greetings ARNEGIE HIGH SCHCOL has lived through a period of 40 years. During that time hundreds of the community's young citizens have been gnaduated and sent on to further preparation for careers of service. Where these graduates serve is told in the directory found elsewhere in this volume of the Voyager. This directory reveals most interesting data. One fact which impressed us most was the large proportion of graduates who entered higher institutions. ln' spiration to do so must have come, in part at least, from contacts made during the years of secondary preparation. Years ago statistics disclosed that about 10 per cent of high school students throughout the nation entered 'a College or University. In the same years, from 40 to 50 per cent of Carnegie High School graduates entered higher schools. Today the per cent of graduates from our high school who go on to advanced schools still exceeds that of the nation. We are giving below interesting facts on this subject: -s H Per Cent of Class Per Cent of Class Entering Colleges Entering All or Universities Higher Schools 1927 f 36.2 f 41. 1928 ' 46. 58. 1929 38.8 f 52.8 1950 32.3 47. 1931 22.3 ' 08.1 1932 17.3 40.4 1933 19.2 f .-12.1 1934 16.5 f 21.1 1935 f f f 17.9 f f f 27.3 As the present principal of Carnegie High School I compliment the Alumni and extend to them my greetings. I am gratined that for the past decade it has been my fortune to be associated with them. I also extend to the class of 1936, which has sponsored this anniversary number of the Voyager, to the Faculty, and to all others who have assisted in the publication of this year book my hearty good wishes. r IBA 'lf-gufa x ' 1 R.
