CARMICHAELS AREA HIGH SCHOOL OUR HIGH SCHOOL Our high school had its beginning in 1907 in one room in what is now the Carmichaels Borough School with one teacher. Miss Mantie Strawn. Miss Strawn was joined by Mr. Edward Rinehart the second year and by Miss Minnie Clutter the third year. It was a three-year high school having its first graduation in 1910. The need for a building and a bigger teaching staff soon became apparent, and the first building for the students of Cumberland Township was built in 1910 near the southern end of Market Street. That building is now known as the Central Building. The new school contained three classrooms, an office, and an audi- torium which had a seating capacity of three hundred. A chemistry laboratory was added in 1919. With in- creased enrollment more classrooms were needed ne- cessitating changing the auditorium into classrooms in 1927. In a short time this building no longer accommo- dated all the students in the area, and so the idea of a new building was presented to the voters in the 1927 election. They voted an appropriation of $200,000 for a new school. In the summer ground was broken on the old Hathaway Homestead which was to be the site of the new high school and a cam- pus of several acres. Finished in the spring of 1929, it contained twelve classrooms, a library, office, science laboratory, and an auditorium which seated 880 stu- dents and a gymnasium which seated 800. With added space and new facilities a more varied curriculum became possible. The Industrial Arts Course was started in 1938 and the Home Economics was made available in 1940. Field sports were given a boost with the completion of the athletic field. In 1938 the fence, the retaining wall and the two center sections of bleachers were built. Lights were added in 1940 and the field house in 1941, completing the most outstanding stadium in the area. In 1962 Carmichaels Borough School merged with Cumberland Township School District. This union is now called Carmichaels Area School District. The merger was one step toward further consolidation which is being planned by the State Department. This planning causes us to believe that we may expect a greater and more varied school program. Carmichaels Area High is looking forward to sharing the benefits of such planning. 2

This Annual is dedicated To Mrs. Ruth M. Crago, friend and counselor, we dedicate this first volume of the Area Echo. Mrs. Crago received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from California State Teachers College and her Masters Degree from the University of West Virginia. While at California she was a member of Philo Society and at West Virginia she belonged to the Chrestomathean Society and Kappa Delta Phi. Her teaching career began at Cumberland Town- ship from 1916 to 1917. Then followed positions at Monongahela Township from 1917 to 1921, at White Ash Consolidated Schools and Eden Valley Consol- idated Schools in North Dakota from 1921 to 1923, and again at Cumberland Township from 1925 to 1927, at Monongahela Township from 1927 to 1932 and again from 1936 to 1948. She returned to Cum- berland Township in 1948 and remained with us as librarian and guidance counselor, and along with her library work sponsored the Library Service Club and the Probationary Library Club. to MRS. RUTH M. CRAGO Librarian and Guidance Counselor Her services have been many and varied. In addi- tion to her regular school services, Mrs. Crago spon- sored the first 4-H Club in Monongahela Township and the National Honorary Society also in Mononga- hela Township. She became a director of the Flenniken Memorial Library at the time of its charter. Our local PTA gave her an honorary life membership, the first in this county. At one time she served as the Greene County representative of the Board of Directors for California State Teachers College Alumni Association. To what extent her influence is being felt or will be felt no one will ever know—so many have been influenced and guided by her. May one of her biggest satisfactions be knowing that she has given her best and that because of her, part of this world is a better place. To you, Mrs. Crago, we wish to express our sincere thanks for your help and your interest in each one of us. May your retirement be all that you want it to be. 3
