SEVENTEEN EMPLOYEES PERFORM VITAL FUNCTIONS FOR THE SUCCESSFUL OPERATION OF THIS SCHOOL In addition to the faculty, seventeen other employees perform functions vital to the suc- cessful operation of this school. The secretaries, the cooks, the custodians and the bus drivers typed thousands of words, prepared and served several hundreds of lunches, cleaned thousands of square feet of floor spoce, and drove several thousand miles in all kinds of weather to get us to our desti- nations, Much credit goes to these groups for maintaining this school, top-notch in appear- ance, in efficiency, in setting good attendance records and in being noted for having excel- lent lunches. SCHOOL CUSTODIANS are Don Green, Nor- 'ran Stephens Came F'-, 'fe, Val Carnobe and Lavefn Pretzscln. THE BUS DRIVERS are Raymond Newman W' - ford Aldridge Vicrcr Beck Phi, Farnev, Rsis Rose and George Ve..oe. 23 IN MEMORY OF l.uyKkGao We Pause To Remember Once Agcnn 'I'hree Of Our Clcrssmates Kxrk Lucky And Duck Who Lost Thexr Lives In A Tragxc Automobile Accident Near New Athens Illxnols May 24 1958 O O O O O I I I I I I rr ir r h m WAY GUY' wl5'0'90fd Richard Kennnh Fra!! W IN THIS SECTION THE SENIORS PASS IN REVIEW Many of the details concerning the senior class are left in the l'iands of the senior officers and the executive council. Selling soda at the concession stand during the football and basketball seasons was one of the activities of the senior class. Together, the officers and members of the executive council chose the invitations for graduation. Perhaps the most im- portant item on the agenda for the officers and council was deciding on and planning for a senior trip, ABSHER, CHARLES EVERETT Able E 5C,':vE Ccnmd N' Sc?-efce C Sb 4. AND NOW THE FINALE - THE RECORD As we started our journey through our four fateful years at CTHS we were 196 strong and green freshmen to boot. What a won- derful year it was to be! As the year progressed we chose our own leaders, with Benny Mitchell as president, james Gidcumb as vice president and Barbara Mitchell as secretary-treasurer. We, too, were invited to elect attendants for the festive affairs. Barbara Mitchell was elected Home- coming attendant and Wanda Mitchell and Bob Rice were Sweetheart attendants. Our sophomore year was tilled to capacity with clubs, activities and sports. We elected Benny Mitchell, president, Richard Fretz, vice president, and Sue Allison, secretary-treasurer. We added to our accumulating royalty Anna Grinage and Arthur Welch as Sweetheart attendants and Ianice Gray was chosen Home- coming attendant, While Zaetta Bradshaw served as maid of honor. We had finally made it, upper classmen at last!! President, Doug Sanders, vice presi- dent, Iudy Hippy, secretary, Becky Wood, and treasurer, Zaetta Bradshaw led us through this successful year. Ianice Reeves was selected to represent us as Homecoming attendant and Benneta Trousdale and Norman Graham were elected as Sweetheart attendants. We topped all magazine sales and set a new record. A junior play was added to our long list of activities. Our Prom Sand and Sea, proved prettiest yet. Becky Wood was chosen to reign as queen with Wanda Mitchell, Iudy Rippy and Dixie Shipman making up the royalty of the deep. Now we are approaching the climax of our four wonderful years at CTHS. We can boast of a fine basketball team which went to the Sectional finals. This was the second team in the history of the school to advance to such a high tournament position. Our own Norman Graham, football and basketball star, won honorary mention as tackle on the All- American team. Ronnie Bingman landed on the All-Conference team in basketball and Sammy Hughes gained the All-Conference second team. We presented the senior play Decision on Ramey Scott. President, Benny Mitchell, vice president, Lois Ozment, secretary, Sandy Malone, and treasurer, Norman Graham, with the aid of the executive council and sponsors, put the final touches on plans for a senior trip set for May 9. To reign over our Homecoming celebra- tion, the football team chose Sandy Malone, queen, and Norman Graham, honorary cap- tain. Dixie Shipman was maid ot honor, while Iudi Chastain was elected by the class as attendant. Tove Besstun and Sammy Hughes were chosen as the Sweetheart Dance's regal couple. Frances Keleher and Linda Card with Douglas Sanders and Gene Hardesty made up our contribution to the queens court. Graduation time is drawing near and our four year high school journey is almost ended. We linger to remember the basketball and football games, parades, dances, joy, teachers, and happiness. 6 J iw gin , - ', Y , 0- 4 3 Six , ed L' f 'W L -.. , L 'E 4 , sv- ., - S V ' ' 1 J , Q V 5 i sr ,,.,,. ,. The spirit was re- newed, this time to stay, as the Bulldogs slip- ped by a strong Albion ball club, 7-5, and then successfully laid aside conference foes, Bridgeport, l8-l2, and Olney, 27-B, to establish a record of 4-l. The Carrriians lacked the necessary scor- ing attack on Homecoming night and fell be- fore the conference champions, Mt. Carmel, l8-O. Again the following week, the Bulldogs were kicked, this time by the Mules of Fair- field. The McDougalmen found that two quick Mule touchdowns were too much. Although close until the closing minutes, the Bulldog couldn't muster the necessary offense to pene- trate the heavy forward wall of the Mules, In the Salem encounter, all-conference tackle Norman Graham, suffered an arm injury early in the second period and his absence was felt as shown by the 24-7 deficit. On the final play of the game quarterback lim Gidcumb re-injured a weak back and both boys were admitted to the hospital upon arrival in Carmi. The final game of the season saw the in- jured, hampered Bulldogs pitted against the Foxes of Mcloeansboro, lunior guard Bob But- try filled the vacancy left by Graham while Larry Rister and David Howell split quarter- back duties in the slot left by Gidcumb as the locals make-shift squad hit the Foxes 20-7 to climax a winning season. CARMI POSTS 9-5 NORTH EGYPT CONFERENCE RECORD The Carmi quintet posted a 9-5 mark in NEC competition, good for a second place tie, and a 20-l0 overall record. One of the tallest teams ever floored started the season looking quite impressive and, although drop- ping several contests, were considered strong in potentiality. The Bulldogs entered the Bridge- port Holiday Tournament during the Christmas vacation and faced Gray- ville, Olney and Bridgeport, ln the finale they combined a sharp offense with an impenetrable defense to grab honors and the first place trophy for the showcase. Later, in Ianuary, the Blind Tour- ney drew Carmi, Mclueansboro, Norris City and Albion to the McLeansboro gym to draw for opponents and games. The Bulldogs were matched with Edwards County and reached the final game via a 52-47 score over the Lions. But Mclseansboro, sparked by Terry Sloan, turned the tables and tragedy befell the Bulldogs as the Foxes came out on the topside of a 68-50 score. The Bulldogs still brought home a second place trophy. COACHES MCDOUGAL and Eve ing 5 rare moment. The date of production was April lU. The plot centered around a lonely newcomer to Lawrence High named Ramey Scott, depicted by Sandy Ma lone. Ramey was accused of stealing a wrist watch from her locker partner and so to counteract suspicion from herself claimed to have lost a turtle brooch. As the plot deepened a valuable diamond ring disappeared and all trails pointed to Ramey Scott. The climax comes when a news paper photographer named Gil Hatch Ron Graham, pried out the truth. The ring thief turned out to be Miss Eunice Call, played by ludi Chastain. SPRING ATHLETES The '59 track squad lacked lettermen and therefore wasn't in serious contention for the NEC crown. With coaches Iohn McDougal and Arkell Fischer Working daily with the candi- dates, the Bulldogs hoped to revive interest and build up enthusiasm in this sport. Much of the local attack rested on the shoulders ot junior distance sprinters Gene Gammel and Tom Winiger. Gammel specialized in both the halt mile and the mile, as did Winiger. Gammel stepped off encouraging times in both races and continued condition- ing and experience added to his improvement. Dash support was provided by Sam Hughes, lim Grarnmer and Dean Stuby.
