Endicott, Mr. Kenneth E. Hurt, Miss Delores Feldkamp, Mrs. Helen Miller, and Mr. Bill Brown, senior advisors SENIORS OF 1957 ln the fall of 1953, 161 very green freshmen streamed into the halls of Carmi Township 1-ligh School. Do you remember that year, when tabbed as Hot Bodding Freshies by the seniors, we were sponsored by Mrs. Pauline Ackerman, Miss Helen Deputy, Mr. Bill Brown, Mr. Iames R. Endicott, and Mr. Kenneth Hurt? That was the year we won two S10 awards for being good citizens and helped cheer the football team to an undefeated season. As second-year-men we returned to a school enlarged by two wings which survived the catas- trophe on lanuary 2, 1955 when the central section was destroyed by fire. With the 1uniorfSenior Prom and the magazine campaign weighing on our minds, we started our junior year secure at last in the slot of upper classmen. The outstanding event of the year was centered around our prom with the theme i'Over the Rainbow. Moving into the new part and producing Our Town, the theatrical debut in the auditorium, helped complete our last year in high school. After being shuffled from one wing to the other via Tin Can Alley for two years, we at last were trans ported into the modern, spacious central section of CTHS in March, 1957. Miss Delores Feldlcamp, Mrs Helen Miller, Mr. Bill Brown, Mr. lames R. Endicott, and Mr. Kenneth Hurt have helped the remaining 109 of us through the last three years. When on May 31 we take our final bow, we will have completed four years crammed full of football and basketball games, dances, parties, classes, classmates, teachers, laughter, tears, fun, and happiness. Too, Have Moments To Remember When, as freshmen, you began your high school career with 186 members, you were destined to break records. To begin With, you topped all previous enrollments that year. Your class was the first to start in the just completed school. You too were victims of the fire and were shuffled with the rest through the ltTin Can Alley from one wing to the other. Your sponsors that year were Miss Ameline Tur- ni, Mr. Arkell Fischer, Mr. Doyne Winter- rowd, and Mr. Don Shroyer. For three years you have furnished a winner for the Elks Essay Contest. With l34 classmates, you returned your junior year to break some more records. During the magazine sales drive you topped all previous junior class sales when the sum zoomed to 33,789.80 Now you are making plans for the lunior-Senior Prom, one of the biggest moments of your high school life. Serving as guiding hands in this great task are Miss Turni, Mrs. Tait, Mr. Evers, Mr. Cralley, and Mr. Fischer. Choral work is offered in three different classes, boys, girls, and mixed choir. The boys' and girls' choirs are for those who would like tc learn the fundamentals of vocalistic work. In the fall tryouts are held for a girls' sextet and boys' quartet. Singing to enter- tain civic organizations and participating in the high school music contest are the activi- ties of these two groups. The singers collaborate with the band at Christmas to present a concert for the public. Again in the spring, they combine for ano- ther musical fest. For two years the choir met in the shack at the far west end of the school. Now they have returned to their room homes they knew for only a short time. Bill Lasater, a junior, played mostly in a reserve role, but backed the other five creditably when an off night oc- curred, with his strong rebounding abil- ity. The Bulldogs faced the toughest sche- dule in CTHS history, playing such teams as Granite City, Paris, and Cen- tralia. The Bulldogs rebounded back af- ter their first game loss to Paris, with a four game winning streak on their home floor. Then came the deep freeze, when Carmi went cold, l-osing the next three away games, only one of which had a margin of more than five points. For the first time in CTHS history, the Carmi Bulldogs played the Centralia Holi- day Tournament. The Bulldogs were the underdogs in the first game but they came through with a victory over Belle- ville 56-49. The next game was a nip and tuck affair with the ninth rated team, Bock Island Allernan, with the Bulldogs finally coming out of the short end by only one point. The Bulldogs bounced back with a vic- tory over the hustling team of Mt. Carmel, but were routed by the foxes of McLeans- boro, whom the Bulldogs had previous- ly defeated. The McDougalmen entered the Norris City Blind Tourney, gaining revenge over McLeansboro and an old rival, Norris City, for previous defeats for the cham- pionship crown and the trophy. After capturing this crown, the Hard- wooders finished the season setting a new high school record of a thirteen game winning streak. The Carmi Bulldogs entered the Re- gional Tournament -on their home floor with a l8-6 record. The varsity easily triumphed over the Fairfield Mules in their first round of tournament play. The third time is charm was proven wrong as the Golden Aces of Mt. Carmel went clown before the Carmi Bulldogs by a score of 44-30 in the semi-finals of tourney play. The McDougalmen entered the cham- pionship play against the tall and deter- mined Mt. Vernon Rams. Scrapping until the final buzzer, the Bulldogs were still fighting and hanging on to that faint light of hope, only to be defeated by the Rams 61-57 in the championship contest. Will he make it? Led by the P.U.'s, the snake dance winded its way down Main street. Friday afternoon school was dismissed. The student body, bearing threatening signs for Mt. Carmel, marched through Main Street heralding their hopes for the winning of the game that night. The thrilling game ended in a tie with a score of 7-7. The l95c juniors exhibited their hidden talents wiien they transformed the gymnasium into a place high among the chimney tops after many weeks ol hard worlc and perhaps a few bitter words but lots of fun. On the night ot April 20, 1956 the seniors were taken 'lOver the Rainbow to spend a too short night in the land heard ol only in lullabies. Reigning in the colorful country where skies are blue' were King Terry Downen and Queen Nelly Davis. Their court was com- posed ot Peggy Malone and lim Whetstone, Mary Trousdale and Bob Dean, and Cynthia McCallister and Ken Brashier. That night tropibles, sure enough, melted like lemon drops, dreams came true, and with bluebirds flying overhead everyone danced to the music of Archie Griffin and his band. The seniors were whisked back to the beginning of their high school days and taken on a reminiscent trip when the story ot their high school lite was presented to them. The night ended, the rainbow disappeared, but the star that had been wished upon still sparlcled brightly in the sky, This moment lingers still! f' W, . 35 Elllv X1-ci f fu dry 1 sf V f A .
