Election day found many students Wish- ing for a place on the Student Council. Campaign speeches delivered in a student assembly helped make the deciding votes Come either for or against the candidates. At this same assembly, the Student Coun- cil presented a new bass drum to the music department. Witty comments in the Bulldog Barks helped amuse and educate us. Listen to this. Iudy. We gave the DAR and Bausch and Lomb Science Awards to Darr Lynn Sta- ley, a deserving student, who will use them to pursue a better career in leader- ship and science. Then came the big moment for us who are seniors. We marched and sat think- ing of the times we had said Oh, I'1l be so glad when I am through with school. i ' W .'.'V4f ' ? f If 41 ,:,:: , fw, g , U i Q ' 4 ,fi , 5 J, kid ' wi ,535 f' fm If fn v fs ff 1 ,W , 5 ,m ' ' , 1hwW ' ,. :4?fiQlVf'! We prepare for Homecoming Is there something wrong with this table? And then the rains came, We welcome the Homecoming weekend with a bright bonfire and pep rally. Then we parade uptown with our famous PU's leading the snake dance. By Friday morning our spir- its have been dampened a little by rain but we still decorate floats for our parade. As the parade hour arrives, rain still pours down, so, we cancel the long awaited parade. By night time the rain stops and an out- standing Homecoming crowd files onto the football field. At halftime, 1954 queen, Ann My- ers, relinquishes her crown to the new queen, Charlene Myers, while her court and attend- ants watch. After a decisive victory in a downpour, we retire to the gym to spend the rest of the evening dancing. Kay Reeves, queen of the Sweetheart Dance. February rolled around with all its hearts and candy. We celebrated by having a Sweet- heart Dance. Atter voting in school for our favorite classmate, we waited patiently until the set night to find out who would reign over the 1956 Sweetheart Dance. After the long procession reached the place of crown- ing, the royal couple were announced. Ron- nie Winter, King! Kay Reeves, Queen! We did our best to make this dance the best ol the whole year. We spent many hours ol hard work and fun to prepare for this gala oc- casion. After all the hustle and bustle. the night finally fell upon us. Wonder who will be the lucky ones? . . . Don Williams, king of 1955 prom. Between dances there is a program to amuse you. Aren't we lucky? You. Inez Fair, are Queen of the 1955 prom. For Us at the Iunior-Senior Prom Fish, mermaids, and other undersea crea- tures deck the walls cmd hang from the ceil- ing. Sea shells in pastel shades make the background for the coronation. During a short program prepared by the juniors, King Neptune and his court were in- troduced to the crowd at the dance. This added to the total effect of the scene. Then the moment We breathlessly awaited arrived. Traveling through each year at such a surprising rate, We are amazed to find ourselves now at the close of our high school days. ln these last four years We have advanced from greenies to sophisticates. Trying ex- periences have confronted us many times but We pulled together our brains and managed to pass. Rachel Englebright, Betty King and Carolyn Anderson led l49 of us through our freshman year. During our sophomore year Ioyce Williams, Ken Brashier and Mary Sims were our officers. One hundred thirty-three of us started this year. As juniors, 127 of us slipped through school led by Bob Wylie, Rachel Englebright, Sonya Kirk and Neta Corbin. Our class was honored by having the Homecoming queen two years. Ioyce Williams was queen our sophomore year and Charlene Myers our senior year. Our junior year probably proved to be the year We did more to prepare ourselves for the future. We Worked in small groups to make the prom the best yet. Cinderella Cottage proved to be a great success tor us. Under direction of Miss Dor- othy Stanley, it was the last play to be pre- sented in our old cafeteria. Without our sponsors we could have not made it through these four years, Our sponsors for the past four years have been Miss Doro- thy Stanley, Mrs. Pauline Lamp, Mr. Kenneth Berger, Mrs. Wilma Vaughn, Mr. Harold Rob- bins, Mr. Elmo Purdy and Mr. Fred Webb. As sophomores we lost one of our advisors and teachers, Mr. C. V. Cochran, as the result of an untimely death. It would only be right to say that our senior year has been the best yet. Soon we will part and only memories will remain of our lives as graduated of the class of '56. 47 933 , ? -Ali ray M., 2 40 -P f V Q9 1 f'-5, A2 vi pu- fu ,Z i in-qv 40' -nd ,, we-1' 'T' 1 Laura Arbaugh Bonnie Aud Susan Ball Barbara Barnes Iudy Cotter Ianei Craig Iudy Dagley Ioy Dari! Will he be stopped? Looks like he ran mto cr little trouble We play rough and hard. The 1955 football season at Carmi High School may be in the past but it is one never to be forgotten. Perhaps the biggest hindrance to the Bulldogs was weight. The smallest team to take the field in several years was out- weighed by at least 15 pounds per man in every game. The football hopes also suffered a severe jolt when Kenny Brashier and ,, ,N . 3 Ierry Downen were lost early in the year to the team for the entire season. Brashier missed the gridiron action due to a knee injury and Downen suf- fered a dislocated shoulder. The campaign opened on a sour note as the Bulldogs fell before the powerful Benton Rangers by the score of Zl-14. This loss snapped the locals carry-over winning streak at seven in a row and also se- vered the three year perfect home record. The Bulldogs attempt to get back in winning gridiron form was stifled as the Lawrence- ville Indians upended the lo- cals 21-6. Yea team! Changing the course of tra- vel from downward to upward, the third encounter found the Bulldogs nosing out the Iohnston City lndians 20-19. Living up to expectations, Ronnie Winter, quarterback, threw two touchdown passes in the third period. The following Friday the well-oiled gridiron machine of Coach Don Shroyer steam-rolled over the Albion Lions, 46-6. With quarterback Ronnie Winter paving the way, Carmi scored a sur- prisingly easy victory over the highly regarded Eldorado Eagles, 27-13. The entire Carmi forward wall turned in a sterling performance. There was the usual fine impressive play of Lee Roy Emery and Bobby Dean, plus the im- proved performance of Mike Solliday, Riley Stover, Mike McCombs, Leon Myers and Shelby Hankins. The Mt. Carmel encounter proved to be an individual scoring duel be- tween Bobby Winiger and Mt. Carmel's Bud Brown as the Bulldogs battled the Golden Aces to a l4-l4 tie. Winiger tallied 14 points as Brown accounted for 13. On a very wet and muddy field the locals rewarded the Homecoming fans with a 20-U decision over the Fairfield Mules. Coach Shroyer unveiled his single wing and unbalanced line attack against Bridgeport as the locals chalked up a 35-6 victory. And as all good things must come to an end, the Bulldogs completed a very successful season at McLeansboro, scoring a 27-0 decision over the Foxes. , fr Q R E Haba, y .. Z Q ze .ry . . The hopes oi continued success in the future will depend mainly on the freshman and sophomores of this year. Many favorable comments have been rnade about the B squad this season. These boys compiled a 12-7 record. With the irosh piling up a 7-1 re- cord in stiff competition, prospects are bright for good cage seasons in years to come. One . . . Two . . . Three . . . Four. In addition to these boys, there are approxi- mately titty other boys in spring sports. The varsity team was composed mainly of the lettermen and a tew newcomers. The Bull- dogs colors viewed tor the first time in confer- ence competition at the conference meet, April 21, took first place honors. if 2 W iz. 4 ,fam fag ' .-.fha-.
