My brother, the one who taught me to drive, D1dn't think he'd make it sometimes alive. One day when my car went up a tree, I found out that repairs were not free. To have it fixed took all my pay, But I had her out on the road again the very next day. It was fun driving again, you see, But guess what happened, yep, the very same tree. In November the Bobcats, under their new coach, Mr. Smith, began basketball practice. with the experience of five letter- men, good coaching, and a lot of determination the team compiled a record of ten wins and two losses to win the Centeral Maine League Championship. This is the first time in seven years that Carmel has won the C.M.L. trophy. At Madison the Carmel Team swept aside all competition to win the Regional h Class S trophy. The teams we beat were Monson and Harmony, The manager, Duane Small, did a fine job throughout the season. The winning of the trophies was made possible by superb co-operation, teamwork, and fair play on the part of the Bobcats. As you can see by the above picture, we wound up the season with eight girls on the team. Although we had quite an unsuccessful year as far as winning goes, we did gain a lot of experience, both in learning how to play together, and how to suffer defeat courageously. we had a lot of fun playing the various teams, making new friends, and stopping at the different restaurants after the games to please our deserving appetites. we wish to thank Mr. Stevenson for his time spent in coaching us, and also thank our fans who cheered us on during the games in spite of the over-whelming odds. Brown The cheering squad this year of Carmel High consisted of Janice Croxford, Junior, Linda Luce, Soph moreg and Tracy Rich- ardson, Mary Lou Small, and Merle Brown, Freshmen. The cheerleaders are chosen on the following qualifications: appearance, cooperation, poise, personality, and voice. Perhaps the latter qualification is as important as any, for this is as hard-pressed as much as the others combined. Without a clear, strong voice one could not possibly be a cheerleader, for volume provides that stimulus that gives an added push to the basketball player. And how the fans love to hear the cheerleaders ring the rafters with their cheers. There's s mething about a wholesome, light-hearted cheer that makes a person shiver with delight and makes him eager to see his special team win. Only two of last year's cheerleaders were back with us th e year. This meant that we really had to practice a lot and with much stamina to get into shape before we dared venture onto the floor in actual cheerleading. we hope that we inspired our team to do their best during the games, and that in the future the cheerleaders will continue to do their utmost in cheering. The Cheerleaders. Front row: A Dean, A Vicnaire, P, Argent, R. Reed, R. Erskine. Back row: Mr. Smith, W. Mahon, H. Willey, A, Smith, P, Hansen, D, Mahon. During the early weeks of September, Mr. Smith called a meeting of all the boys interested in baseball. Although we had anticipated a much larger turn out, only 16 boys reported. After we had practiced for two weeks, we met and defeated Corinna, 7-2, for our first win of the fall season. Our next game was with Hart- land, which proved to be a contest but we pounded out a 13-9 win. The f0110W3-H8 week East Corinth came to Carmel and was beaten decisively by a score of 7-2. For the next game Carmel had to face the undefeated Hermon Hawks. There were doubts in everyone's mind about the outcome of this game which would determine the league leader. The Carmel 'Bobcats' came out victorious as they downed Harmon 15-9. In the final game of the fall season Carmel topped Newport, 19-O. The team and fans hope that with the coming of the spring season the boys will have just as much on the ball as they did during the fall season, In the spring with only ten boys eligible to play, the Carmel boys got off to a flying start by easily defeating an aggresdxe East Corinth team by a score of 9-O. For our next game we traveled to mass Park to meet the Hampden Broncos. Al- though we were behind early in the game, our bats came to life in the fifth in- ning, and we won the game, 9-6. with four more games remaining we hope that we will continue winning and bring Carmel High School its first baseball championship. Roger Reed '58' THE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENTS. The battling Bobcats skillfully and determinedly gained point after point as they fought their way to the top of the Central Maine League basketball ladder. Team after team fell back as they cracked under the pressure of the Carmel Five. Finally, the Bobcats reached the top, overjoyed with their success, and tired because of their relentless efforts. But first place was not with the Bobcats long. The Newport team defeated them after a game in which overtime had to be called. What a game that was! Tension was at its extreme. No one knew which team would win, as basket after basket was matched. This defeat, however, did not bother the Carmel Bobcats, for they surged onward, eagerly, and with their hopes high. At Madison the Carmel team did a fine job. '1'he first game on February 13, with Monson, was quite close during the first half. At the end of the second quarter the game was tied up, 23 to 23. When the third quarter started, how- ever, Carmel settled dovm and took the lead, winning the game with a score of 614 to 37. What a game, and what a day! The snow came down in blankets, making driving very treacherous. The next day the cagey Bobcats defeated Harmony, 79 to 57 Harmony played a good game, but lacked the punch to win Th1s victory gave Carmel the right to enter the Eastern Maine Class S Tournament at the Civic Center in Bangor On February 20 the Carmel Bobcats and their fans walked gayly and hopefully into the Civic Center, carrying with them the inspiring Carmel Bobcats banner All the planning, playing , and experience of the year might now mean the differ ence between victory and disaster Mighty shouts of cheer rose from the specta tors as their favorite team swarmed onto the floor There goes the whistle! There they are, Carmel and Morse CBrooksJ, facing each other, both teams hoping to gain sweet victory At the and of the first quarter Camel had the lead by one point, and from there went on to beat Morse, 59 to P42 The next night Carmel tasted bitter defeat when they lost to Mt Desert, 72 to 67 But during the latter part of this game the spectators saw Carmel at the1r peak, for the Bobcats quickly gained about 20 points to be within 3 points of tying the game Many towns had hopes that Carmel would win, and remarks were heard from fans that they had never before seen a team with such fair play and sportsmanship and with that good old Esprit de Corps Although the Bobcats did not win the coveted Eastern Maine Class S trophy, they did receive the Central Maine League troplw and the Regional la Class S trophy Also, in years to come, the team will have fond memories of the good times after the games at the Pilots Grill A few of the players will not be with the Carmel team next year, but the Bobcats will undoubtedly have a winning team I M Q 09 af ll 4 4 , L 4 THE Boys' on ' BOL E.
