MARIQUITA DARBY BREY . . . gladly would he lean and gladly teach. 2 DEDICATION You have, during your twenty years of unlimited service and devotion, given to your pupils a basis for a lifetime of mental growth and achievement. You have opened our minds to the histories and philoso- phies of the culture that man has created in the course of ages. You have, in each of your classes, made your stu- dents aware of the fact that self-discipline is the most important power a person can possess and that it is the key to all learning. Your commanding personality and outstanding in- tellect will never be forgotten. Your teaching of the accumulated knowledge of the past has given us a broader understanding of the world about us and a lasting appreciation of our heritage. Because you bring to mind Chaucer's description of the Oxford scholar: . . . and gladly would he learn and gladly teach, we dedicate the 1962 E1 Padre to you, Mrs. Brey. FOREWORD The moon which fills the night sky reflects light from the sun. A mountain lake, with its glass-like surface reflects the images of rocky grandeur which surround it. The polished exteriors and window panes of buildings reflect the busy forms of people who com- pose a city. The pictures, quotations, and stories found in a yearbook reflect the spirit, knowledge, and activities of the people who make up a school. As each individual looks through his yearbook, the physical re- flections are changed into mental reflections or mem- ories. Thus, to present the happenings of this past year, we have chosen the theme REFLECTIONS for the 1962 EL PADRE. SENIOR STORY The great day of graduation is here! We, the proud class of 1962, gather together to record our final appearances as students in thesehallowed halls. Our eyes gaze wonderously into the future and our memories review happily our past experiences in high school. We arrived timid and uncertain as Freshmen, wondering if we would ever hold a position of dignity in this great institution. Dur- ing our first effort toward making the Scholarship Carnival a suc- cess, we worked enthusiastically on the Hula Hoop and Cakewalk concessions. In the Spring of the year we staged our first dance with an Egyptian theme. It was a project worth remembering. As Sophomores we showed our intellectual ability by topping the honor role. We provided an alternate cheerleader, and the boys took an active part in athletics. In our Junior year, after turning our enthusiasm from a success - ful Carnival to raising money through concessions and a student directory, we started planning the annual Junior-Senior Prom. Under the supervision of JoAnne Oliver and Nancy Bibb the gor- geous round French ballroom with its billowy ceiling and crystal chandelier, plus the magnificent gardens where refreshments were served, carried out the theme to perfection. It was a Prom long to be remembered. The girls who participated in GAA that year proudly received trophies: one for the basketball championship, and one for the hooky Championship. We also contributed two Cheerleaders and two Songleaders. In our Senior year we worked energetically on the Scholarship Carnival and Carnival Dance, which were the most profitable in the history of Carmel. Our reigning couple--Queen, Karen Reed and King, Steve Shore--won through tight competition by the auctioning of Senior boys as slaves for a day and by cake sales. In our year as leaders, we have done well accademically. Three of our classmates, because of their scholastic standing, were able to take the Russian language at Monterey Penninsula Junior College. As the year drew to a close we were accepted at many different colleges all over the United States, and some of us are planning to leave on trips to other parts of the world. Yet whether we go on to college or move into the busy world, our graduation from high school marks only the beginning of learning. For we now are stepping forward to become adults, trained and ready to meet the challenges of tomorrow. 19 ROBERT AIBEE Ilmbll A quiet gent, who plays football, In swimming he's been known to crawl. Always take ad- vantage of your opportunities and plan for the future. We the graduating class of 1962 would like to thank the faculty 4 and administration for the guidance, teaching, and encouragement which they have given us during our years at Carmel High School. No matter how large the school grows, may the warmth, the personal manner between teacher and student, and the freedom to exchange ideas in and out of the classroom remain as it is among the ivy covered halls of Carmel High. fo Gabby -girls! ! ! THE JUNIOR CLASS STORY The Class of '63 began its Junior year by working hard to 'make the Scholarship Carnival a success with its concessions: the Penny Pitch, the Gold Fish, and the balloons; The members of the class then began to raise money for the coming Prom through concessions and the Student Directory. The class contributed Songleaders and Cheerleaders to add en- thusiasm at our rallies and games. The boys were very active in all sports. The class participated in many school clubs and in our Student Government. As the year drew to a close, the Juniors endeavored to create one of the most beautiful and charming Junior-Senior Proms. After gathering experiences, both of fun and learning, the Juniors are looking forward to next year when they will be mighty Seniors. 52 A. THE SOPHOMORE CLASS STORY The Sophomore class began the year with their usual abundance of enthusiasm as they worked on their concessions in the Scholar- ship Carnival: the Cakewalk, the Baseball Roll, the Wheel of For- tune. They made a large profit. Their King and Queen contestants came in second to reign over the Carnival. The Sadie Hawkins Dance they put on was a huge success. All who attended enjoyed themselves. This class of 1964 has lots of spirit, talent, intelligence, and athletes all in one class. They wilibe gladto assume their position as upper classmen. 56 Sheryl Adams Sandy Aedersold Christine Allaire Jim Amos Tom Arnold Carlin Arriola Elizabeth Auguatitus Randi Ayres Lance Baird Pam Barnard Mike Becker Patricia Bell Penny Bell Jim Belvail Charles Benson Ronny Berry Roger Besel Chris Bingham Arthur Black Sally Blackwell Peter Blake Renee Blasius Melody Boren Jerry Bradley Gregory Branch Tim Brattin Cindy Brinsmead Carol Brooks Douglas Brooks Ellen Broom Juanita Brosche Trenton Browne Barbara Broce Carl Burger Suzanne Byrne Bruce Campbell Martha Campbell Susan Campbell Richard Cartwright Cindy Carver Nadine Carver Steve Cate Robert Cayce Nancy Chapman Dennis Clark Becky Colas Lolita Concepcion Pete Conway Deborah Cooke Carolyn Cotchett Richard Crispo Denise Cullen Susan Culver Gael John Cunningham 57 David Faunce Jose Farnandez Bob Fike Charles Flammini Juanita Flammini Frances Forsman Ruth Fry Tim Fry Suzanne Gansel Rose Garretson Willa Gerber Barbara Giles Kathleen Goulding Kathleen Graham Anne Haber Enborg Holle Linda Harbin Jeremy Harrison 58 Richard Cunningham Susan Currier Paul Czirban Sandy Dancy Claude Dechow Daphine Dennis J ack De Witt Joann Dickens Thomas Dicken Hugh Diltz Danny Duygou Evelyn Eaton Robin Ekstrum A1 Eleshio Wendy Ericson Tom Erk Mike Faber Phyllis F arrar Julian Hattersley Christine Hatton Patti cia Hazdovac Scott Hennessy Sue Herzberg Elizabeth Hirschi Mike Hohler Helen Hoisington Bob Holmes Lana Holstein James Holt Susan Hulsey Catherine Jacobi Donald Jensen Mary Johnson Keith Jones Michele Judge Chery Kastor Ann Keeble Gail Kelley Bi 11 Kennedy Francis Kibler Mary Kiger Howdy King Eugeni Kodani Laddy Kratky Ann Kraus Jan Kteiger Bill Lawson i Barbara Klas Thomas Leutzinger 1 Jack Lingenfelter Matt Little Thomas Loesel Holly McCullock Gwen McEwen Jean McEwen Phyllis McNab David Martz Chris Marvin Bherrill May Marcia Millar James Miller Jay Miller Nancy Miller Anne Miniam Bob Moffatt Peter Morton Tim Mosolf Barbara Murphy Peter Nelson Edward Neroda Michael Newman Alan Nishimura Larry Oliviero Jerry Olson Kathy Osgood Marjorie Otter Carl Pallastrine Roger Pallastrine Mary Pat Palmer Ann Parga Linda Parson Mike Paul William Pellett Mavnard Petersen Sharon Phelps 0 Phyllis Pilone 7 Grant Pollock 24 C7 Rose Marie Pollock Q; A4 Thomas Poulos AA Alexandra Pratt 47y ng: F f? fvij'xv R Penny Seely Muriel Seng Sandra Shabram Tarry Sheingold Gary Silva Silva Roberts Susan Simmons Barbara Simpson Andy Smith Robin Smith Steven Smith Lee Spencer Dennis Spriggs Gary Spring Becky Steele Robert Steliga. THE FRESHMAN CLASS STORY The class of 1965 arrived on campus last September a little awe- struck and frightened because they didn't know what to expect from the school or what the school expected from them. They enthusiastically began to show that they would be a benefit to the school by raising a good sum of money for the Scholarship t Carnival withtheir concessions: William Tell, King Arthur's Sword Pull, and Simple Simon. w Their marvelous dance whichthey put on in the Spring was a huge Success. Next year as Sophomores, we are sure they will again show the same loyalty and service to the school. t 62 Mike Aldinger Danny Aldrich Corinne Alley Christine Altman Kurt Andersen Joe Anz'mi Bill Aucourt Peter Barnard Lyn Beckley Royal Benson Christine Benegaard Kathy Bingham Don Blanks Beverley Blout Adrianne Bowman Joe Branco Peter Braudrick Michael Bray John Deck Alan Delfino Tina Didrichsen Pierre Dorsman Lynette Dowker Bonnie Drennon George DuBets Larry Egger Linda Eghartner Roger Ellis Jean Ernst Kathy Farr Joan Felder Diana. STU DENT BODY PRESI DENTS Page van Loben Sels Steve strove to raise school spirit in all activities during his presidential semester. His diplomatic Charm helped improve relations between student, faculty, administration and other schools . He helped to lead students to- ward active thinking and participation by his own personal example. We are certain Steve will finish his term in a manner of which we will all be proud. Page spent a great deal of time and effort in reviving the interest in student government. He did this in several ways, such as; student body meetings and the rekindling of interest and participation in CCASC. During Page's term, Ginger Laky inaugurated the hall bulletin boards which replaced the procedure of read- ing the daily bulletin in Class. Elaine Kachavos worked hard to make the Save the Children clothing drive a success. The Annual Winter Benefit Ball was given for the retarded children's home in Carmel Valley. Under Steve Farifield's guidance, the Senior parking lot was relocated. Thus, Page vanLoben Sels fulfilled his responsibility to the students of Car- mel High with never ending gusto, in- genuity and enthusiasm. Yet some scholare ship money had already been made through the class come petition of electing the king and queen. Here Niki Budd and Forrest Cornwall are in the process of auctioning off Russ Gamble as a Slave for the day to the highest female bidder. This auction helped the seniors win the King and Queen Contest. The Carnival Dance with the theme Story Book Land was held a week later. The crowning of the king and queen, a lovely fashion show, and dancing to the music of the Herb Miller Band all created an enjoyable evening. The Carnival proceeds will provide about $4500, the largest amount ever made, for scholarships to be re- ceived by some worthy seniors. The Annual Scholarship Carnival was jointly sponsored by Girls' League and the P.T.A. The team ex- tended its winning streak to an impres- sive 36 games. The Padres ended their reign, however, on Oct. 20. A valiant struggle against King City's agile Mustang football team proved fruitless as the final whistle blew, ending the game with a tra- gic score of Carmel --13, KingCity --l4. Undaunted by this de - feat, the Padres re- tained The Shoe by flogging arch-rival Pacific Grove. Carmel not only dominated the league in spirit, but con- tributed seven play - ers to both A11- C.C.A.L. football teams. Junior Varsity Coach Buzz Rainer Managers : Sandy Dancy Pete Steffen 109 VARSITY BASKETBALL Ted Leidig, Page Van Loben Sels, Rich Shively, Jim Kelley, Pete Morse, Rick Baldwin, Steve Johnson, Alan Marshall. Basketball, next to football in popularity, is a sport that receives much attention at C.H.S. The Varsity Basketball team of 1961-1962 was made up of 8 able-bodied boys. They worked together as a well- matched team, but three of its members stand out as worthy of special praise for their sacrifices for the team and their superior playing of the game. They are: Pete Morse, Ted Leidig, and Jim Kelley. Coach Lawitzke, should certainly be congratulated, fora wonderful job of coaching this varsity basketball team. His work is appreciated. This year'sJ.V. Basketball team hada some- what successful season under the coaching of Clyde Klaumann. The members of the team were balanced in scoring and rebounding, which led to an evenly balanced attack. Because of this balance, the reserves saw plenty of action when the first string players were incapaci- tated. Outstanding players were Dave Maher, Dave Harris, Bob Wells, A1 Nishimura, and Skip Michelson. Coach Clyde Klaumann 114 l LIGHTWEIGHT BASKETBALL This year Carmel High School should be proud of its Lightweight basketball team. In his second year of coaching at Carmel, Harold Lippstreau was able to bring forth ahighly successful team. Jose Fernandez, Richard Wise, A1 Arndt, looked especially good this year. Most of the boys on the team will be re- turning next year, so Carmel should have an Lightweight and Junior Varsity teams, come the 1962-63 season. Coach Agan Carmel should once again have an excellent swim team this year under the expert coaching of Mr. Agan. The squad has not participated in any meets thus far, although it has been diligently practicing for several weeks, thus providing an excellent look at the future material before the season gets under way: With a number of returning swimmers from last year's team, and many new and welcome faces, Car- mel's 1962 swim team looks very encouraging. Art Homing, Tom Farrell, John Hackbarth, Bob Albee, and Steve Harth are doing fine jobs in their fields. A major part of the prospective--excellence ofthe team is due to the superb coaching and constructive guidance of Coach Agan. 118 LIGHTWEIGHT SWIMMING This is the first year that there has been a light- weight swimming team separate from the regular varsity swim team at Carmel High School. Since this is the first in a long line of good lightweight swim teams, they cannot be compared to any previous group. Many ofthe members oftheteam have had previous experience, therefore the team as a whole should prove to be a successful competitor for honors in meets this year. The track season of 1962 should prove to be a very successful one for the C.H.S. team. Coach Baskerville has an excellent team and with his superb coaching, the track team will know no bounds in awards won this year. Running the mile will be Terry Butler and Stan Smith . Sprinters are TedLeidig, George Pollock, Alan Marshall, Chico Fernandez, and Dave Preve. Jon Raggett, Rick Baldwin, Rob Holt, and Tom Leutzinger are the team's hurdlers. The 880 runenrs are Warren Chapman and BobWake- field. Taking care of all competitors for the 440 will be Lee Oleson.
