He has established a more complete program of student-administration co-operation. With the help of Miss Wright and Mr. Edwards he maintains strong contacts with the members of the student body and the faculty. This trio is always ready to help and guide us in our work toward becoming good citizens. The School Board serves as a consulting and governing group in the Carmel School District. Mr. J. O. Handley has served as president of this group for the past year. The success of Carmel High School can only be credited to the mutual co-operation of the fore-mentioned people. The students of Carmel High would, at this time, like to express their thanks to this group of townspeople who so willing give their time and effort to help us. These and many more remarks like it have been made concerning our outstand- ing facilities. The credit for this work goes to our diligent maintenance crew. All the students who were lucky enough to tour the swimming pool with Mr. Viljoen, real- ized for the first time the great amount of work and time that must be spent in operating this recreational facility. Thanks go to Mrs. Sadie Martin and her staff for keeping us well-fed dur ing the past year. Those mid-morning lunches enabled us to survive the new four-two day. CAM 0 1954 Dreaming back over through the years that the class of l954 has been a part of Carmel High School, many of its outstanding activities come to mind. The class came to Carmel High in 1949 with the distinction of being the smallest class ever enrolled herein. The classes' eighth grade year came to a close with a successful sale of magazine sub- scriptions to fill their class treasury. The present seniors can still boast of the best Big Game bonfire ever . In its Freshman year the class gave an assembly fbased on the showboat themej for the rest of the school. The class began to show itself in sports and other activities this year. As sophomores, the class started off with the Sadie I-Iawkin's Dance, which is always one of the most popular dances at C, H, S, Again the class put on a good assembly, and at the end of the year it managed the auction booth at the Girls' League Scholarship Carni- val. Upperclassmen at last! The class, as Juniors did justice to their ability to work to- gether when they took over the responsibility of the soft drink concessions in order to finance the annual Junior-Senior Prom. Now the class of '54 is graduating! The seniors have topped off four years of success with the Senior Play, Clarence and the Senior Prom, which was held later in the year. In farewell the class wishes to extend its thanks to the faculty, and expecially to Miss Larson and Mr. Farr for their untiring guidance through the years. Allen Knight President Francis Schutz Vice. The staff was consolidated in order to get the most work from each member and production began soon after school started. The Meyers Yearbook Co. was chosen to produce the El Padre this year, and with their help we were able to have a full color cover and two-tone inserts. Credit goes to Alicia Bauer for her artistic talent displayed throughout the pages of the book. I-lurl Swartz again received the photography contract for the fourth straight year. A Shoper's Guide took the place of the advertisements this year. The job of putting this out fell onto the shoulders of Lynn McMath and her capable staff. All the art work for this venture was turned over the Luan Meatheringham. So far we have had no repercussion's from this new idea and we hope it can be used again next year. Jeanne Fratessa did a fine job as Literary Editor. She was capably assisted by Melinda Scheffer and Lyle Shelton. Sarah McCould began to prod for money early in the year. Thanks to her persistant nature the money was collected long before the books arrived. Pat Ricketts was always on hand when the pictures were being taken. Out of confusion and chaos she collected every type of shot. She was constantly nagging Mr. Swartz for speed and more pictures. The results are some of the best shots we have seen in many years. Many thanks to Millard Martin for developing so many of the candids. A special line of glory and thanks to James Digger O'Dell for the hours he spent working in room l, helping put the l954 El Padre together. Thanks again to every member of the staff and expecially to Mr. Donald Craig for their help throughout the year. Pat Finley, Editor-in-chief. Top to bottom: Mr. Craig, J. Hamilton, L. Alexander, S. The California.Scholastic Federation of Carmel High School had a large membership this year considering the high standards for admission: three A's and one B, or two A's and two B's and one point for certain extra-curricular activities. The honor ofa C. S, F, Lifer is sought by everyone in the or- ganization but not gained by many. A student must be in C. S. F. for four out of six semesters to qualify. The honor was achieved by Pat Finley, Sam Smith, and Chris Conley. Junior Statesmen was a very busy club this year: planning conventions, parties, debates, and opinion polls. During the second semester the member- ship swelled to sixty-five members. The two conventions attended by the club this year were in Sacramento and Long Beach. Carmel hosted the spring regional convention for the second consecutive year. Top to bottom: R. Newell, C. Chapman, J. Farrel, D. Castagna. J. Menand, R. Requiro, G. Danelz. R, Shields, G. This active club, ably sponsored by Mrs. Morlang, didn't confine all its activities to sports. lt put on many successful dances, one of which was the Co-op Hop after the Carmel-Pacific Grove basketball game. The Block C turned into a social organization this year and helped to sponsor many dances. They united with the L.eader's Club to put on the series of Turkey Trots, the proceeds of which went into the needy family fund. They successfully cut down the noon hour speeding from classes to the lunch line. They perfected the art of hiding behind the pillars outside of Miss Larsen's room and nabbing the violaters. They also raised money for the injury fund. Top to bottom: I, Thompson, R. Newell, G. Wiglitman, M. Pitmin, G, Chapman, T. Brosnan, H. Taggart, 46 ,, D, Castagna, D. Rowe, B. Powell, T. Ledbetter, W. The highly successful Plymouth Rock dance which was a co- operative venture with the Latin Club started the club's activities for the year. After Christmas this enthusiastic club held its annual La Fete des Rois or the Twelfth Night Party. The party was enjoyed by all and presided over by a charming king and queen. The club, not willing to end their activities so early in the year, planned a pot-luck supper which was also a success. After decorating the Fort Ord Hospital for both Christmas and Hallowe'en the Red Cross began extensive planning for the spring I..uau . This affair was held at the swimming pool and gym.
