But, it is true that there are so many more people whom I don’t know and who don’t know me. Therefore, for those who don’t know me ... lam Tateo Oishi from Saitama, Japan, spending a year with the Bear family in Carlsbad. I have done many things here and I have found some favorite things to do. One of them is a school life at Carlsbad. I found some similarities and many differ¬ ences between an American school life and a Japa¬ nese one. You can choose classes and teachers much more than we can. And you have some Interesting classes we don’t have, such as photography, comput¬ er, drama, etc. I could find many differences in other school activities too, such as sports club and games, homecoming and lunch assemblies. And I like these differences. But the most Important thing In my school life at C.H.S. is having new friends and good teachers who help me. Since they are very kind and friendly, and I like my new friends as much as my friends in Japan. Next I want to express my feeling to this city, Carls¬ bad. During the first two months, almost everything in this city was strange to me: people, languages, cus¬ toms, views. Of course, some of them were not strange at a glance, yet I found differences in the details later. But now, most of what I have exper¬ ienced are not strange any more. Some streets and views looks as if had seen them for a long time. In conclusion, I like this city next to my own one. I have not completed my year In Carlsbad yet, but this year will be the very best. want to say “Thank You” to these who gave me thiswonderful year: A.F.S., C.H.S., my new friends, and especially my new family - the Bears. LINDA BEATTIE - AUSTRALIA I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of my stay in Carlsbad. I have seen many different and interesting places since I’ve been here. School Is Interesting and fun. I like how everybody gets so involved. There are also a lot of extra-curricular activities which enjoy. Everyone has been extremely friendly to me both at home, school and In the community. My family Is love¬ ly; they’re really great people. Living In another coun¬ try Is one of the greatest experiences can think of and I’m glad I had the chance to participate in A.F.S. and come here. Everyone I’ve met has been Just lovely in making me feel so comfortable and I’m sure I’m going to enjoy my years htay in Carlsbad. Ann Meyer Asst, Treas. Roy Angel President Jack Ukegawa Board Rep. It ' s nice to look back on my high school years and see that even while was working for my 4.0 I was still able to go to football games, to to dances, go water-ballooning dur¬ ing float season, and do all those other things that you can only do in high school. For those of you not gradu¬ ating in 83 here ' s a word of advice: Use your class time for class work instead of making your plans for that night - that way when you ' re out that night you won ' t be worrying about the work you should be do¬ ing, and you ' ll get alot more school work done. Enough advice, in conclusion. I ' d like to say thanks to my family for helping me through school, and to Mark, Mike and Fred Gervin for helping me through everyth¬ ing else. In achiev¬ ing academic success, I found that I have to learn to take responsibility for myself. No one way going to chain me to the desk and force me to write that stupid English paper , nor was anyone going to do it for me. I ' m not trying to say that I spent my entire four years of high school doing homework, but I am saying that I had to find a balance between what I wanted to do at a particular time and my long-range goals. High school is a time for gaining maturity in many ways, and by far the greatest sign of maturity is being able to intelligently make decisions for yourself. Try to look deeper into the reason why you ' re doing your Algebra I homework assignment to see that you have chosen to do it and that you are really in control of your own life. Best of luck to all my classmates and those to follow. 71 CABERET NIGHT The 8th annual Choral Department Caberet Night was held in February in the Carlsbad Womens Club.
