I1 7 CAROL A D MATT ATTE DED GIRLS, A D BOYS' STATE Every summer two top students in the junior class are selected to attend Girls' and Boys' State. The students are selected on the basis of outstanding character, scholas- tic achievement, and school and community service. Students gather from all over the state to learn about and discuss the various levels of state government. Carol Krepps was chosen to rep- resent us at Girls' State at Squaw Valley. She has lived in Carlsbad all her life. Carol was vice-presi- dent of her junior class and vice- president of A.S.B. her senior year. She was a member of the Drill Team for three years, serv- ing as lieutenant in her junior year and as captain in her senior year. Carol has served on the V.D. Panel for two years. Matt Williamson was chosen to represent C.H.S. at Boys' State in Sacremento. Matt came to Carls- bad in his sophomore year. He was A.S.B. Treasurer in both his junior and senior years. These characteristics are present to all of those who know him, whether they be students, a professional colleague, or a personal friend. His mumblin , jumbling kidding , half-serious, halfg- in-fun prattle about athletics, the school library, the admin- istration, or the loud colors of men's and women's clothing might have been that day's particular issertation, but upon closer inspection, one has only to notice that he also might be wearing a Rink shirt, red print slacks, and white elt and shoes. So when people lauglh with - to - or about him, he laughs im- self because he can receive as well as give humor. Ralph Alloway feels a warmth for many tytfpes of people and his sincerity is always elt. Said a student: Mr. Allo- way cares. g an administrator: He al- ways tells me the truth about a question, not just what he thinks I might want to hear. : from another man: He's just a great guy! g And that pretty well sums it up. One trait almost legend on this cam- pus is his A1lowayisms . For with a straight face, ne often expressed himself with such foreign sounding words as sa- Wards, button-neers, ca-Nope-e, and Ha- Wi-ya. And it is with great affect- ion that these words are used and re-used. Mr. Alloway originally comes from O-hi-ya. When e first came to the Oceanside-Carlsbad Union Hi h School District in 1952 he was a teacier, assistant varsity football coach and J .V. baseball coach. - He was part of the original staff at Carlsbad High School when the school opened in 1 57, and since being here was both counselor and teacher. ln February, 1962 the Carlsbad Women's Club selected him as Teacher of the Year, the first high school teacher to receive this recognition and honor. Mr. Alloway's deelp involvement in the development o Carlsbad High School is well known to the many hundreds of students who have come in contact with him . Over the years he has rovided sage advice, direct counselling and needed assistance to all who sought his help. Going to school under Mr. Alloway was recognized as a special privilege. This fine human being - this teacher, counselor, and coach is one of the rare ones who could define his ultimate ambition and then go on to realize it. and John Simco i '23 4 LJIKLJFK GRGA ORGA ORGA URGA ORGA ORGA ORGA ORGA ORGA ORGA GRGA ORGA ORGA ORGA ORGA ORGA ORGA ORGA URGA URGA ORGA ORGA ORGA ORGA GRGA HRCA A 1L11'X1 ILJ IZATIO IZATIO IZATIO IZATIO IZATIQ IZATIO IZATIQ IZATIQ IZATIO IZATIG IZATIO IZATIO IZATIO 1zAT10 IZATIQ IZATIO IZATIO IZATIQ IZATIO IZATIO IZATIO IZATIO IZATIU IZATIU IZATIO I7ATIn The Lancer Band gave 21 per- formances this year ranging from the International Moto-Cross at Carlsbad to the U.S.C. football field. Regular classes ran on a minimum schedule while during afternoons, students attended an activity of their choos- ing, including such things as fencing, Mexican food cooking, tumbling, bicy- cling, film making, macrame, and many others. The controversial homeroom was one of their inovations though it was helpful in student voting, announcements, and the Pledge of Allegiance. Spring performances included join- ing the 1000 Voice Choir at Palomar College, a choral festival in San Diego and two school concerts. Making music together also prompted some social events. ' i A.F.S. , the American Field Serv- ice, has an adult chapter and a stu- dent chapter. Both raise money to sponsor and exchange of students between countries. This year Mahmut Baycan of Turkey and Milena Lorza of Colombia have been going to Carlsbad High. Mahrnut has become a member of Mitch Ritter's family, while Milena has been Cindy Clou- ston's new sister. They have seen much of our life here and have taught us much about life in their own countries. Meanwhile Jim Prescott has been learning about Australian life. As an American abroad, he was sent to Adelaide for a year, where he had many enjoyable experiences as an Aussie. Another Carlsbad student who is eligible to spend a year as an American Abroad is Carrie Lawson. She hopes to be part of this program to further international understand- ing. Its purpose is to bring together the high school and college students interested in a one-to-one relationship between themselves and a needy child. The students in SHARE spend a minimum of two hours a week tutor- ing a child between the first and sixth grade. They teach reading, mathematics, or both and also strive to establish trust and understanding in the underprivileged child. This is a great and worthwhile program, said an interested observer. Putting together a yearbook is a hectic but rewarding experience. Many people not on the annual staff gave us their time and understanding. Gerald Oshima and Mitch McPeek helped with photography. They arranged for and selected graduation announcements: ordered the caps and gowns, which this year included a souvenir keep your own cap : and in general organized all the senior activities. The seniors sponsored the Powder Puff Football Game, instigated a bottle drive, were in charge of the Winter Formal, and helped buy rings for the A.F.S. students. They were also in charge of decora- tions for the Lancer Day Assembly. We have made a number of changes in this year 's book. One obvious and hopefully enjoyable one is the addition of color to several of the introduction pages. We have divided the book according to seasons and have put the class pictures near the back to allow for extra space for candids. We re- duced the page size and increased the number of pages so we would be able to devote more pages to more activities. The we I refer to is the yearbook staff. Everyone has had a job of some sort to do this year. It may have been as little as delivering negatives or as major as being editor of a section. A great deal of the work was completed outside the classroom. Afternoons, evenings, and weekends were often spent with just a few of us drawing layouts and cropping pictures that never seemed to fit. We were often pleasantly interrupted by Iill's sudden-brainstorms, hysterical goings- on in the back room, the ladies' crafts class, pizza, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and Miss Reglien's car. Tennis pictures were once taken without any film in the camera. It was instances like these that helped to keep us sane. Indeed, without such shenanigans we would never have survived the continual battle of staying in columns and ridding the pages of interior white space. A great deal has come and gone with these pages. We tried our utmost to record the events of the school year. We hope we accom- plished it with a more than fair amount of accuracy. I would like to thank the following people, plus the many I don't have room to name for their contributions, either in photography or writing: Mrs. Joyce Layton, Matt Williamson, Dean Uhlinger, Mitch McPeak, Gerald Oshima, Rick Hasselo, Jerry Bryan and Dean Conners of Metcalf Studiosg a big thanks to Taylor Publishing and Bruce Church, Miss Nelda Townsend, and Joe Garibay: Mrs. Georgianne King for advice and good cheer, and of course, all those on the staff. There is one person who deserves special recognition for her work on the annual. She is Miss Jennifer Reglien and it is to her we wish to dedicate this book. It only took a sentence to make the dedication, but it took Miss Reglien a year to oversee and advise the completion of the annual.. She, more than anyone else, has made this book possible and made our year all the more meaningful. Our appreciation and affection cannot be expressed with just the words thank you. With the shipment of these final pages, our yearbook is complete. I will be just as anxious as all of you to see it in June, for it has rather been like putting together a puzzle - piece by piece. Now the pieces are laid out for you as a whole: I hope it is a whole you will Zami, LU? enjoy and remember always. 9+ l xi, 224 ww ff ff , Mwwjgw Kkfwlffgpjpifjgfvwq V W W M ' 95?f?QW?'igA5?iQMfsf MH' .
