Studen t Council The personality of the Student Council may vary from year to year, but each new group is a definite and sincere representation of the best interests of the O-C High students. Each member of the Student Council assists in the prep- aration of the agenda for each day. Mrs. Morse stated that there was an unusual attempt on the part of the group this year to leave personal desires and opinions in the background as they have been exceptionally eager to offer help in any way possible to others. They proved to be a group of in- dividuals who worked enthusiastically and eagerly together. The first planned activity of the Student Council was the Flight to Success Commencement dance in the Spring of 1955. Last fall the Council purchased the high-fidelity player which is stored in the Student Council room and is used on many occasions. The Council sponsored the orientation program for the Freshmen, and Hello Week. The latter projects proved most worthwhile in giving the new students a good start in high school. Since the school has grown to such numbers, it was felt necessary and desirable to separate, for the first time, the alumni and students at the Homecoming Dance. It seemed Htting that the Fiftieth Anniversary theme was used for the dance. On March 23rd, the Student Body Carnival for the high school and college, jointly, turned out to be a gala affair. The Council handled the publicity except for individual booths. Decorating and arrangement of booths were handled by indi- viduals or organizations - no school supplies were used. Three prizes were given to the three best-decorated booths at the Carnival. Wfhen you do get there you begin thinking how you have spent your time and if you have learned anything. It is hard to remember 'way back when we were Freshmen, but how can we ever forget the party in College Hall! Then came our Sophomore year when we placed second in the P.T.A. Drive and the Escondido Rally. Another year gone by, and we were Juniors. We placed third in the Escondido Rally that year. In June we put on the annual junior and Senior Prom with Black Magic as the theme. Our Senior year began with O-C winning the second Avocado League Championship and Joyce Thomas and her court of four princesses being crowned as Homecoming Queen at the Coro- nado game. Our skating party will never be forgotten because of the bumps and bruises carried around for many days afterwards. The first Senior Dress-Up Day was at the end of the first semester, with our next one after Faster Vacation. After much discussion we were finally able to have Hobo- Day, and following close behind came our Taco Party at the Acapulco Gardens. When the junior and Senior Prom came around we knew the big day was getting much closer. The final big dance of our high school days, the Commencement Dance, meant this series of events was drawing to a happy ending. In the last week, The Farewell Assembly, Senior Breakfast. and Baccalaureate left just a few days more until our class of 1956 in caps and gowns walked down the aisle to our Gradu- ation. fs.. lla edic to:-ian Mary jane Dunn, with a grade-point average of 2.95, is the Valedictorian of the Class of '56. She plans to attend San Diego State College to obtain a credential for elementary teaching. The qualifications to belong to this organization include parents' permission, C aver- age, the students desire and a recommendation from the Dean of Boys. The Corps has many interesting activities such as the Annual Military Ball held March 2. They'have four rifle matches, with the last two for the State Wide Governors Trophy, and an Annual Drill held at Oceanside. The biggest activity of all is the arrival of 1400 cadets in Oceanside from all schools in Southern California for a trip through Camp Pendleton. , .7 ' was 'V71' Q ROW 1-Sharon Miller, Carol Rogers, Eleanor Gray, Marjorie Reiner, Verna Gann, Paul Karpowicz, Armand Badillo, Marilyn Hatcher, Shirley Kinsey, Irma Sahagun, Beverly Geister, judy Fogel. This year's current O-C eleven will always be remembered as a team that didn't know when to quit and had the ability to come from behind - a sign of a true champion. Under the tireless efforts of Mr. Simcox and Mr. Alloway, who spent countless hours coaching and toughening up the team, the Pirates were rounded into a well organized ball club. They compiled the most triumphs ever recorded by an O-C team in one season -going through their entire league schedule without meeting defeat. Never has a championship team been behind so often as was this years outfit. Many were ready to concede the title to another ball club, but the Pirates, with a determination to win, wouldn't quit. and their fighting spirit paid ofi, bringing to O-C their second straight Avocado League Championship.
