4 .ra W!! W.. 313 .A is . as . . . ., .W www st 1985 may not have been the most successful year for the Cavemen, nor was it Coach Tommy Gruber's best season. However, 1985 was the year for the two forces to corn- bine. Coach Gruber commented, Carlsbad is a good football town and a good football school. With that attitude, Gruber and the Cavemen gave it their best shot. The Cave- men went through the most devastating siege of injuries to strike Carlsbad in a good many years. Yet with over fourteen starters out of commission, the Cavemen played their games with a desire to win. What mat- tered was that the Cavemen made a com- mitment to go all out with every banged-up body they had to throw into the games. One of the highlights of the year was when the Cavemen scored a 15-14 victory over the Clovis Wildcats which gave the Cavemen a shot at the State playoffs. Hopes were high the next week as the Cavemen traveled to Roswell for their final district game. The Cavemen played a tough game, but the win never came, and the chance for a State championship was cut short. ' Q11 Alton Simon removes an opposing player for half- back Dolan Courtney.
