Maybe it ' s because there are 1,480 students and 73 teachers running around the halls. Although the school is located in Belmont, most students live in the outlying areas: San Carlos, E.P.A., and Redwood Shores. This poses the problem of getting to and from the school. Driving is the privilege of many juniors and seniors, but the freshmen and sophomores usually get stuck riding the bus. After school, the bus stops are crowded with laughing and jeering st glad to be out of school. The school met it ' s first students in 1952. The drawn up by Kelloher and Daseekins, took a lot of hard planning. Rumor has it that one of the architects ran off to Mexico with the school ' s funds, which slowed dow the building process considerably. It ' s about time to take a good look at our school and see how much effort was put forth to educate us. Mayh we should start looking at Carlmont ' s good qualities. Making the CONNECTION Left: Anyone home Alyson?? Below: Future novelist Gina Cresci. Above: Where oh where will the little prom be? Left: Hey!!! MAKING THE CONNECTION Because of the tremendous influence the powerful me- dia has on our lives, it ' s no wonder we ' re considered the M-TV generation. Being more future oriented than our parents, we ' re more independent, mature, and in control of our futures, replied many high-school students. With this in mind comes the pressure to achieve at a much earlier age. We ' re choosing the right classes and clubs and com- peting for the top scholarships. In order to pay for those expensive school activities that drain our savings accounts, we had to stretch our minds and time by juggling a full load of courses and part-time jobs. Get more involved! Get more involved, said many of the class officers throughout the year. Several students obeyed this command, but many of us ignored it. Even though we were struck by many aspects of student life, many students, for various reasons, found it difficult to get involved. As the weeks went by, it came down to deciding what was more important, having a memorable and exciting year or being bored and un- satisfie d. We knew it was important and soon the clubs be- gan to fill and the activities were well attended. While getting more involved, new friendships were made. Birthdays were acknowledged and occasionally students were seen wearing P.J. ' s or carrying various dif- ferent kinds of balloons from class to class. Getting more involved brought friendships closer, and here at Carlmont friendships last a long, long time. STUDENT LIFEJ BOO! The tradition of Halloween dates all the way back to t 700 ' $ and religion of the Druids in pre-Christian Ireland a nd Scotland, and even until the 19th century ' Halloween folk customs of Pagan origin flourished. The public lues become less tolerant of youthful pranks, such as .setting fire to barn and overturning hay wagons, but the celebration of this oik festival has stayed so throughout the years that this is still o ne of the more important folk occasions dominated by the young! year at the Halloween rally there was quite a variety of unusual and traditional costumes. In third place and beatin out the raisins was Julia Mentan, as a bunch of fresh gra Making fun of our neighboring rivals, Daind Trier. Paul rthur, and Tout Proven dressed up as three beautiful Notre Dame girls ready for a night out on the town and won second place. And in first place, Louis Citllen decided to just go easy this year and go as an overdressed witch. Good job Louis, Julie, and our Notre Dame Sweethearts! m C H 8 Carlmont bid summer a fond farewell with a rally and a dance. The execu- tive board showed their limbo talent while the cheerleaders helped raise the spirits of the student body. They must have done a good job, for the dance that night was attended in record numbers. The tropical teens filled the student union with laughter and music until the wee hours. 1 1 it week ■year. It was put on by the Rally Board and was a big success. There were three rallies, including class competition all week. It was close for a while but in the end the juniors would prevail as the true winners. The mighty class of 89 would win the float and banner competition. Congratulations juniors!! Everyone had Scot Spirit, in- cluding the football team, which upset un- beaten Hillsdale High that Friday after- noon! Carlmont ' s spirit was so high, tl the game and the junior float both mac the 6 o ' clock news! Way to go Carlmont! ! SS OF | S: Let ' s Dunce ' The Homecoming festivities were finished off on October 23 with, a fabulous dance. The Iress was nice and the music ranged from Beach Boys to the Reastie Boys. Every- one was eager to find out who was to be crowned Homecoming King and Queen. About halfway through the dance this secret was revealed. Brett Muck and Michelle Read were crowned King and Queen. Their royal court was headed by Jason J olivet and Diana Donabedian as Prince and Princess. Thomas Russell was named Duke and Ku rot McNally and Tiffany Romaneck tied for Duchess. The Lord and Lady titles went to David Louie and Sarah Barber. C gr atulat i ons we re given t o all th e wi wm gr atula ti ons we re given t o all the winners and everyone enjoyed the rest of the spec- tacular c ecu tug. What In The World? We always knew the freshmen were a little weird but what are they doing now??? Beingwrapped up in Saran Wrap of course, Now c ' mon you should have known that. The Hi-Day Rally is the first rally of the year in which each class creates some scheme to embarrass and initiate the freshmen. Each year the initiations get more and more bizarre. This time, as the freshmen waited anxiously in the stands, bowls of jello were being set out for the lucky freshmen who were to dig with their mouths (hands behind back s) for prizes submerged in the cherry glop. Other fortunate contestants got to play Twister in a con- coction of whip cream and other delights. And, of course, there were the one ' s wrapped together with Saran Wrap and sent off to conquer an obstacle course. Admist all the whip cream and flying jello everybody had a great time. Don ' t worry freshmen, you ' ll get your turn next year. 1 8 19 The Snow Ball The Activities ' Board planned the Snow Ball months in advance and it was spectac- ular. The board began decorating early Friday morning. Streamers were hung all over the gym and transformed it into a beautiful ballroom. Balloons were blown up and tied all over. When everyone arrived, the dance was great. Everyone had a great time dancing, talking, and taking pictures. Many of the students had gone out to dinner before the dance, but there were drinks and pret- zels on the tables. The DJ was great and played all kinds of different music. The dress was between semi-formal and formal. The guys were dressed in suits or tuxedos, and the girls were dressed in formal gowns. The dance was over at midnight, and everyone was sorry to have it end. 1 The dance was just getting started. 2 We got the beat. 3 Yes, Paul, it is a camera 20 21 23 SCOT ' S AROUND AND ABOUT FRIENDSHIP WEEK Friendship week took a lot of preparation. It was brought about with the intentions of eliminating the stereotypical attitudes of both students and teachers. Together we should try to develop unity in our school and create new friendships among the students, part- icularly that of ethnic backgrounds. A group of students from Gunn High School in Palo Alto put on a play for us, entitled One of Us . These same students also had goals of closing gaps that existed between different students. Friendship week was sponsored by Meet the Challenge, with a great deal of help from Mrs. Washington, Julie Chang, Sherry Harris, and others.  ♦ ♦ f -f- ■+ MY BIRTH MONTH; X ♦ ♦ 1 ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ HI I ' M; l T rf A ' 59efl TO circle A T f « 4 ill K V Mi MY HOBBIES ARE; • ■■■• i x m I !l£ S i I ' m involved in the following SCHOOL ACTIVITIES: THAT ' S WHAT FRIENDS ARE FOR. A group of teachers and vari- ous other staff members displayed their physical abilities by swimming, biking, walking, and running. Each team member was required to partici- pate in at least one event. After he or she had completed their laps, the ba- ton was passed to the next team member. The race began with the swimming and ended with Mr. Clif- ford finishing the last four laps for his winning team. Not only did the win- ning team need great physical strength, but they also needed team unity, They all worked together and cheered everyone on. 33 Sean Williamson Ronnie Putman Anonymous CARLMONT ' S ARTISTS Anonymous Nancy Kauffold Clubs and Government Student Government Kathleen, are you listening The Elections Board Julie Chang Leland Chee Jeff Dean Mike Hayes Will Johnson Rosanna Loo Jeff Moray Suzy McCarthy Alyson Mitchell Michelle Read Miles Okino Sarah Sensiba Ruba Shaar Kevin Shinseki Ann Smith Shannon Westphal Stanford Williams The Peer Counselors Jason Jolivet Julie Chang Silvester Finley Klaudya Barrelier Marianna Slepoy Dassi Weinstein Will Johnson Tami Fuglestad Kate Beck Joyce Chen Senta Gardner Danika Lisa Dececco Veronica Agrella Leland Chee 43 California Scholarship Federation It fiWt Carlmont ' s Academic Decathalon Team (above) Fritz Wang, medal winner Carlmont ' s Participation Carlmont is the only school in the county that participates in the Academic Decathlon. For the past three years, we have sent participants to the competition. We have had a medal winner every year. In 1986, Tracy Turner won a silver medal for her essay; in 1987, Steve Hwan won a silver medal in the math competition; and this year, Fritz Wang son a gold medal for this essay. Good Luck to the team next year! The California Academic Decathalon ' s History The decathalon was the brain child of Orange county Superintendent, Dr. Robert Peterson, in 1068. It began as a local competition. But he hoped that it would some day become a na- tionwide event. In 1979, Parker Sullivan, Former GTE president, gave his support which resulted in a statewide competition. Then, in 1981, Dr. Peterson ' s dream was realized as it gained national recognition. Now, approx- imately 4,000 schools throughout the United Stated and Canada participate. This year, the Sacramento County Office of Education hosted CAD. Hundreds of high school arrived in Sacramento on March 1 1 to participate in the state finals at California State University, Sacramento (CSUS). These state Finalists represented the best in their county and pursued the gold at CSUS. Each of the team members had to participate in each of the fol- lowing events: economics, mathematics, sci- ence, fine arts, language and literature, social science, prepared speech and impromptu speech, interview, and the Super Wuiz. By pro- moting excellence in each of the categories and team awards were given for first, second, and third place winners. The CAD Association is operated by a Board of Trustees and Board of Directors in close cooperation with the educational Community. Recently completing eight successful years of competition, CAD receives help form volun- teers and employees of the county offices of education and contributions from corporations, foundations and individuals. 45 MISPLACED SENIORS Jim Cala Kevin Klemmick These seniors were misplaced. First on the agenda was the Pacific Stock Exchange, second only to the New York Stock Exchange. Next was the Federal Reserve Bank where the class got to see how stacks and stacks of money are sorted, counted, and trans- ported, and even counterfeited and shredded. They con- tinued their visits to the most intellectually stimulating places by scoping the Hyatt Regency and McDonalds. Finally, it was time to return. This excursion as a class outside Carlmont was an educational as well as an enjoy- able experience that taught the students what the world of money is really like. lii Bnmni e ! Main .mil ««« Sw It ' s The Millard Trivia Hunt ' s 20th Anniversary! Led by our fearless trumpet-playing leader, Friends of Millard Fillmore 1988 went all out to honor the most un- known President once again by looking for things like a ticket to see the Pope at Candlestick Park and information on the Church Lady Dana Corvey (who by the way was a Carlmont grad!). These were just some of the truly trivial and obscure questions which served to pol- ish our library skills and give us many excuses to pull our hair out. But even though Carlmont didn ' t claim top honors this year and they ' re never going to eat Ramen again, they had fun camping out at Pablo ' s Pea Press and wandering around San Francisco on many glorious quests and frivolous searches! A student, maybe a bit of a procrastinator, sits down to write a 500 word college essay. It is due at the post office in one hour. At 4:45 the student miraculously completes the final draft and sprints to the bus stop, app- lication in hand. At 4:59 and 30 seconds the student arrives at the post office door and rushes in. The clerk is just turning to leave. WAIT!! ONE MORE! calls the student, panic-stricken. The clerk disapprovingly looks at her watch. Next time you won ' t be so lucky, she says to the stu- dent. The student smiles widely. Next time, there won ' t be a next time! sings the stu- dent, skipping out the door. Carlmont, like a diamond, has many facets; any of which can make a person want to be at Carlmont. The teaching and non-leaching staff at Carlmont work very hard to help students, not only in the academic areas but in a multitude of ways. They spend hours beyond the school day making Carlmont one of the quality secondary educational facilities in San Mateo County. The students at Carlmont are special also. They make the school what it is today, one of the few schools in the state nominated for the second year in a row as a distinguished school. The students are involved. The parents in the communities feeding Carlmont have given the school support. These parents are involved. A school is a community resource. Carlmont is that resource. The school is involved, the staff is involved, parents are involved, and students are involved. What I like about Carlmont cannot be covered in these few lines. I have tried to list a few things. I feel Carlmont is providing the opportunity to grow and the experiences required to develop to a changing society. I became involved in education to contribute. Carlmont has given me that opportunity. Peter H. The most significant thing he says he will remember about Carlmont is the students. Carlmont has some great athletes, says Mr. Lansberry. Mr. Lansberry will also remember the faculty members whom he has grown close to. Mr. Lansberry has contributed a tremendous amount to our school. He treats everyone the same — he yelled at everyone and strived for unity in our school. School is an exciting place to be. Words of wisdom from the 1987-88 dis- trict teacher of the year — Mr. Jack Fas- man. As a U.S. History and government teacher, Mr. Fasman deals mainly with juniors and seniors, but he has empathy for all teenager. Perhaps this compas- sion stems from his 31 years of teaching in the Sequoia Union High School Dis- trict with 26 of those at Carlmont. Where this hand ha s been a pat on the back , Mr. Fasman doesn ' t like be- ing singled out, since there were so many dedicated people who are deserv- ing . So what is important to Jack Fas- man? It can be summed up in one word — students. He wants everyone to do their best in fact, he demands it. He is a tough teacher, with high standards, who poses difficult ques- tions to get students ' wheels turning. But all of this isn ' t without compassion and real caring for his students. Lansberry 164 Cyndi makes another pass Thank you, Coach Lansberry 166 Loren Lansberry has had a very distinguished career of coaching the Carlmont track and cross-country teams. This year, Mr. Lansberry is going to retire after 32 years of coach- ing at Carlmont. He has an extraordinary win-loss record as a coach and will surely be missed. Mr. Lansberry was born in Oregon City, Oregon. At the age of fourteen he moved to Alaska, but left later that year be- cause of World War II. He spent some time in the Marine Corps. Mr. Lansberry attended the University of Alaska and San Jose State. While attending college, Mr. Lansberry par- ticipated in boxing. While in Alaska, he worked in the forest service, as a fisher- man, a brakeman on a train, and in a lumber mill. Coaching was a second choice for me. I wanted to work in the forest service, but I was weak in math, so I went into coaching. Mr. Lansberry has done an excellent job with his second choice. His cross-country teams have won more CCS titles than any other team in the section, and in track, he boast 304 victories to 31 losses and 2 ties. Those who were fortunate enough to know Mr. Lansberry learned more than athletics from him. They learned to dance, to climb mountains, to run hills, and to coach. He gave lessons in perseverance, orienteering, courtesy, and even mathematics. Mr. Lansberry will be missed by Carlmont, yet his retire- ment has been well-earned. Thank you, Coach Lansberry. Individ- ual Scots have become much closer than in previous seasons. Many few faces were also seen on our courts this year. It was these new members which helped bring additional victories to Carlmont ' s team. This was seen in the matches where Mercy was defeated 3-1 and Woodside 5-0. The girls ' varsity team developed into a stronger and more competitive bunch. For the first time, a Carlmont doubles team beat M-A ' s 1 doubles t eam. In the singles scene, Kathy White made a smashing vic- tory over Notre Dame in three straight sets. How- ever, this was Kathy ' s last year yet there is new talent with great potential for the Carlmont tennis team.
